This music is exceptional. Philip Catherine is a pride in Belgium, and rightly so. And NHOP was out this world.

Philip Catherine... so amazingly under acknowledged as a master contributor to the jazz guitar vocabulary. A fan for 40 years, he still always surprises & inspires. Neils... well, he's just a blessing to art & music.

NHOP is a beast! Very few can play a solo like he does on a double bass! His fluency makes it look easy.

Catherine has a unique guitar sound that combined with a great technique makes his recordings a vice to which I've grown addicted. Like Doug Raney too, but find Catherine's sound something soothing and special. His playing with the legend Henning is, gave us some wonderful cds, included those with Chet Baker. Although my prefered double bass is Dave Holland, (because I find he has the darker kind of sound a double bass can produce), am also a Henning fan. For, of course, we don't find usually a bassist of such a musical level and resounding power. As a bassist Henning is a proess. The result of joining musicians of this size is a dream of music. One we cannot miss if we love jazz. 🤗🎶👍💖🙏

I have that same ES (1962 vintage). It is really cool to him use the middle setting (i.e., both pickups) 'cause it brings out the ES sound so cleanly.

That’s my favorite Jazz box guitar of all time. I’ve never wanted to play someone else’s guitar more than after watching Philip play that Gibson. I wonder why he doesn’t use it as much anymore. I know he play those Goden’s a lot now. He’s so amazing.

Hi Dan - Philip has owned that ES175 since he was a youngster. He put it in my hands and let me play it in Norway circa 1983. An unforgettable memory. I hope you get to meet him and play that guitar someday !

Seeing your comment prompter me to post 2 clips I Philip I made in 2009 demonstrating a few of his compositions in case you'd like to have a look !
Good news !! : Warner Music France just released on 24 Nov 2017 a 5 CD-Box ‘Selected Works 1974-1982’, It includes Philip's 4 classic albums 'September Man’ (1974), ‘Guitars’ (1975), ‘Babel’ (1980), ‘End of August’ (1982) and a previously unreleased recording 'Solo Bremen 1979 & 1982’ album. A complete booklet with notes by some great musicians and the original vinyl artwork faithfully reproduced, except ‘Solo Bremen’ which will be illustrated by a painting by artist Gilles Fiszman.
