It is so great to see Howard. I actually gigged a few times with this fabulous musician here in Germany and he is so very cool. Generous to a fault. One day we sat in my living room and jammed just to play guitar. Howard is a genuinely nice human being. Thank you for making and sending this podcast. John Paiva Munich Germany

I’ve listened to the two albums I found on Spotify of him and George Van Eps playing. What impressed me most was that they blended their styles really well. When I hear two guitarists usually playing jazz it sometimes feels as if the other player is waiting to play next. This is a great interview

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ I had the great fortune of taking a lesson with Howard about a decade ago and he was very generous to give me that great Bob Barry photo calendar of jazz guitar birthdays that's on the wall over his shoulder, thanks again, Howard!

Howard's one of my guitar heroes. Such an interesting technique. I've seen him here in Phoenix at The Nash. I wish I could get to see him more often. What a great player.

Howard is absolutely one of my favorite jazz guitarists. Not because of the 7-string but his tone, phrasing and inventiveness. And he does this little pianoistic thing that I call "stumbles" because it sounds like he is tripping over 2 or 3 notes before he hits the target note. I LOVE the stuff !! Being basically a country guitar guy more than a rabid jazz fan I have to say it really takes a special jazz player to get my attention and Howard Alden has certainly gotten it. I have about 10 jazz players that I really think are quite special and they are ALL #1 as far as I am concerned.

Can anyone confirm whether Howard Alden plays 'extended range' guitars, including a 7 string in a jazz setting? Forgive my ignorance, but that sounds very cool. I'd imagine the 7th string addition would bring new voicings of chords into play.

Nobody touches someone on solo guitar like Joe Pass even with Oscar Peterson, Dizzy Gillespie, Ella Fitzgerald Howard Roberts was good studio work Joe Pass showed me how to play chords and sweet picking with walking bass lines

Great interview!! Appreciated the dive into 7-string and catching up with Howard. Would love to know Howard’s thoughts on players like Tosin Abasi who expand beyond 7 strings.
