This is absolute perfection!! Normally as singers, we are told to focus on the vowels. To make them "round."But I like this guy's use of hanging onto the L's. I love watching his face move as the result of every choir director's dream. It doesn't get any better than this!

There is no “rough start”. This remarkable singer understands the art of the “build”. He obviously has the capability to offer “more” as we heard later in the song (AND THEN SOME, my god!!!) - he chose not to, because that’s not appropriate for the start of something so solemn. So much contrast, so much sorrow. I’m grateful to have heard this beautiful rendition, easily my favorite. Thanks for the goosebumps.

What I heard was an instrument (voice) that was tired and worn in his lower register. However, when his true range kicked his voice was impeccable. I agree the performance and arrangement was designed to build. He may have needed a little vocal rest because his lower register sound a little raspy. This was a very, very nice presentation.

I’ve seen this performance many times before. However, this is the first time that I noticed that they left out the part where he rose from the grave! If you didn’t know the full song you wouldn’t see that this version left him dead and defeated and not alive and victorious!

This song focuses on the Crucifixion, not the Resurrection. Plenty other songs talk about Jesus rising from the dead. Let us have that Good Friday experience now with this song. I think a Resurrection verse for this song was added later.

This rendition is right out of the originally published lyrics by Eleazar Barton in 1899. They sing the first three verses 100% accurately. There was a 4th verse (below) in Barton's lyrics. Other verses have been added by artist like Johnny Cash and others, but what you heard in the video is 100% original. As has been pointed out the song is about crucifixion not resurrection. 4th verse: Were you there when the sun refused to shine? (Were you there?) Were you there when the sun refused to shine?
