JB, Great video, you have really put my mind at ease. I have my assessment in a fortnight and of course I am confidently nervous, however your video has reaffirmed to me I am as ready as I can be. Just a case of practice, practice, practice! Thanks for taking the time to set up this video/post (whatever they are called) I truly appreciate it.

Great video. Did the SPA training at PYB back in 2006, then got married, found home delivery pizza, got bit of a belly, wanting to get back into it and do assessment. Would love to come on one of your RCI courses, would probably do Training session again just as a refresher before assessment. So hopefully book with you early 2021 if you running courses. Will keep eye out for you on MT Site.

@@JBMountainSkills Have watched this video many times now, getting ready for my Assessment in September this year. You speak about Setting up an abseil to retrieve a piece of stuck gear, Do you Climb back up to get back with your second climber, or do you go down to the ground, and expect the person at the top to disassemble setup and walk down an alternative route.
@JBMountainSkills5 ай бұрын
@@markrhodesuk you’d just walk back around and sort the rigging out. Good luck with your assessment.

Triffic Jez. Really great insight into the two days. When you look over a candidates log book can you give some examples/feedback on what you as an assessor are expecting/ wanting to see? And secondly what gear do you expect candidates to bring with them?
@JBMountainSkills4 жыл бұрын
With JB Mountain Skills we expect people to turn up with everything they need... unless they've contacted us to borrow something - we have everything to lend out so it's never a drama! (We always through some ropes and rack in the car just in case anyway!) We don't have a massive amount of time to go through logbooks so we look at the route names and the first line of the notes that show up on our screen, if there are any. Same with all the group stuff - with that we'll have a look at the reflective comments too though. The logbooks, in my mind, are as much for the candidates (and future employers) as much as they are for us assessors, so I encourage notes for your own benefit, but not to go in to loads of detail for my benefit.

JB Mountain Skills Thanks Jez. How long an abseil rope would you recommend?

During bottom rope segment on the first day, would it be good or bad to try and utilize a ground anchor to assist belaying??
@JBMountainSkills4 жыл бұрын
Not at all, used appropriately it’s an ace thing to do!

@@JBMountainSkills rope or sling?? Or does it not matter as long as it's set up right?
@JBMountainSkills4 жыл бұрын
Doesn’t matter, like you say, as long as it’s appropriate!
@YiZongOng4 жыл бұрын
Hey Jez, any particular reason for UK climbers/guides making anchors out of rope over using slings when teaching basics? Could it be due to most gear being pretty spread out in the UK crags?
@JBMountainSkills4 жыл бұрын
It probably stems from all our trad multi point belays with often, like you say, spread out gear. Ropes the most flexible option and if people only ever learnt one way, rope will work everywhere. That said, if possible, I teach sling belay setups first as I find people pick up the core principles more quickly due to a slightly clearer picture.

If you are ML qualified and want to be able to take clients scrambling (graded scrambles), but not rock climbing, what additional qualification do you need?
@JBMountainSkills3 жыл бұрын
That would be the Mountaineering & Climbing Instructor qualification. There isn't a scrambling only qualification, it's part of the MCI.
