Fantastic work with the mulch paths and cardboard! I did cardboard and mulch for paths at my house and no regrets. I did a thick layer of cardboard/newspaper, covering all the gaps as much as possible, then put a thick layer of tree mulch on it all. I had only one very persistent weed come up after all that, but out of about 20 square metres of mulch paths, I consider that a win! The best part about a thick layer of mulch is also how easy weeds come out if they do try to grow in the mulch paths. Soooo easy to pull the whole thing out of a mulch path compared to a garden bed with soil!

Sheds come and go and you are right that shed had had its day! You didn’t even go in there so was just taking up space…and you’ve had the plot for a good while so it is definitely yours. Mulching looks good and is very satisfying, I agree the thickness of the wood chip/mulch is the key along with pulling up the weeds as they grow from seeds that have settled in top of the mulch and sprouted root.

Wish we had wood chip delivery on our plot… each year I have to struggle with the big bales from B&Q… however… your tidy up has definitely prompted me to get up there and get some jobs done 👍🏻 😊 thanks JB

Great beginning on the shed and a good idea to remove all stay nails….keeps they out of the sole of your shoes. When we had our shed built, it had a space underneath due to the slope of our land. I immediately dug in and stapled on all around it a fine chicken wire to keep all our wildlife from making a home under my shed. I made sure it was buried far enough out so no digging animals could get under. It’s been a few years now and it was well worth the effort I did . Something to think about maybe for your shed. ❤❤

JB - you are a shed wrecker - but I bet you got all your frustrations out bashing in that old shed. Looked like hard work. I can understand that feeling of guilt but you are right that old shed had to go. I hope you get your new shed up soon - how good will it feel to have a brand new one? Looking forward to seeing you put it up.

spanner in your thinking JB ... Why not move your compost bins over to where the shed was and use those as a boundary fence and put the shed where they are? failing that I'd collect up all the glass, metalwork and rocks up and use those as hard core for under the shed. it may deter rodents and I bought a recycled plastic base for my shed that clicks together, its like a mesh so you can use it for a car hardstanding and grow grass through it if you want. It wasn't expensive in the scheme of things and will help keep your shed off the ground

Put some of the wood chip into your hot compost bin to break down and give you more compost.

I think wood chip is great, it does eventually compost down, but where’s the harm in that. I really don’t like layering the world in plastic. My plot was fully covered in plastic with soil on the top when I first got it. I’ve gradually removed most of it and have been disposing of anything that won’t break down eventually.

Yes exactly my thinking - if I can get the same result without using plastic then that's a win for me. I do use plastic membrane over winter just to protect the soil from weathering and to prevent weeds, but that stuff lasts forever if you treat it right. I too have dug out tonnes of the stuff from the soil and it really turns you off the idea of using it I think.

Surely, after a while, the cardboard will disintegrate and the woodchip will just sink into the ground. I put a fabric membrane down and then woodchip and it's doing very well. If odd weeds do appear they are easy to pull out.

Yes of course, they do need topping up each year. So only worth doing this if you have a free supply!

good tip jb after three years,dig paths out and use as mulch on your beds and start fresh paths, the stuff that has been delivered looks like it,s from a deseased tree not good mate, hope this helps you

That's something I meant to say actually, because of the texture or chemical nature of the manure, things will not germinate in it in my experience! You do get weed pressure coming through but I find it's mostly from rhizomes already underground :)
