I have always started my peppers inside and when it is warm enough, moved them outside. Everyday that is it is at least 45°F, they go outside to take advantage of natural light and wind, then they come back in for the night. I gardened in Maine for almost 10 years and the one rule I learned there is never let them get cold. I found they never recovered completely and were stunted. No cold for my peppers! Yours are looking great!

I'm so glad I've found your channel, not only is your laughing infectious but you share when things don't go so well such as your patchy germination. I've also struggled with spring onion germination and that's with new seed and not using Sylva grow, it's not ideal but it's nice to know I'm not alone😁

Its a great guide you're doing 😁. I've had a much better season since following it 👍. I too am running out of space and discovering a few issues as well. One being my mistake as i forgot the heat mat was still on and i was late watering them 😬. I definitely need to repot mine i think now, and rotate them too. Keep up the great work (my peppers are relying on you 😆)

I sowed mine the same day as you - not intentional - and mine are doing great, and are huge too. I’ve also potted on twice, a little before you advised, and all at different times, but not far off your schedule, and I noticed a spurt when I did. Brilliant advise so far JB, thanks!

Your chilli plants are amazing. Alas I have no grow lights so I’ve sown mine in March (scotch bonnet are through with 1st leaves. Awaiting Apache to pop through). I overwintered Red Devil chilli plants x 4. They’re flowering & producing fruit in March. Probably too early but I have red fruit which for me is a win. They’re very small fruits but pack a punch

I' am growing California wonder and Liberty belle sweet peppers this year. They seem to be the opposite of leggy and too compact. They've grown to about 1 foot tall and the distance between the nodes seem too small so I' am worried about air flow around the plants. They've started to produce flower buds so I've being picking them off.

Loved the video JB. Got my chillis in a circa 0.5l pot at present. Will they be ok to skip the 1l pot stage and go to the 2l pots (the rose ones Tony Smith recommended)?

Your chillies are looking good JB. Mine aren’t quite as tall as yours, but boy, are the stocky. They’ve been under lights like your, but in a grow tent. I’m having to remove flowers as they are ready to go into the next size pots, but I’m running out of room.
@JBNat9 ай бұрын
One thing about mine this year is that a lot of them have grown taller rather than stocky, but I'm not 100% sure why. I don't think it's lack of light, could just be the varieties. All the chinense are lovely and stocky though.
@stewartw73029 ай бұрын

This is the viparspectra p1000 but I don't think they make this any more. To be honest the big brand ones are roughly the same - spider farmer, Mars hydro etc etc. My main recommendation is that you get one to adequately fit your space and one which has a proper adjustable dimmer switch as they are so much more convenient than having to constantly move your light up and down
@Anthony-n3b3w3 ай бұрын
What light do you have?
@PreatorRaszagal9 ай бұрын
😮Those are some rather big plants! Looking good! Mine looks like the smaller ones you had on top of the shelf. But I guess it is kind of good so they don't become "too big" and take over the tent 🤪 How much water do you add to each tray when you water? I've been adding ~2.5-3 liter a week for a tray about the same size you have. I think I might need to increase that as the plants start to grow.
@JBNat9 ай бұрын
Yes they're very much getting too big!!! About the same as you! 2-3L for each tray.

Great video JB, do you have a build guide for that shelving system? Id love to build something like that for my plants. Having them spread all over the floor is a bit of a nuisance haha. Also, what kind of light is that?
@JBNat9 ай бұрын
It's just an IKEA unit! It's cool because you can customise the height of each shelf. The light is a viparspectra one but I heard they stopped making it with a proper dimmer which is really annoying. I screwed a kitchen cabinet handle into the top shelf to act as the hangar for my light haha
@GurpreetKaur-hd2fx9 ай бұрын
Hi JB, lovely looking chillies 🙂Can I please what % setting you have your light on? I think I have the same light, viper spectre my light is higher up but now my plants are bigger I’m having issues finding the light level that works for them, I previously had it on 50% thank you 🙂
@JBNat9 ай бұрын
Sorry only just saw this! Getting the light right might be the trickiest part! I've actually turned mine right down because if I have it too high they start growing too quickly! I've gone back down to around 30% which is plenty because they're so close now. If I put it up to 50 I can see how much bigger they get from the morning to the evening!
@nitelite789 ай бұрын
I didn't realise you can get so many plants under a grow light of that size. I thought you'd get maybe 8 plants under there when at thaf size. What make of light is it? Thinking of maybe doing something similar next season.

JB im new to growing chilli peppers. Quite a few are growing flower buds. Should i remove them and when should i start to let them flower. What have i been doing wrong for them to keep trying to grow flower buds? Hope you can point me in the right direction
@JBNat8 ай бұрын
Mine are doing so as well. If you're growing them indoors and sowed them early in the year it's just quite common. If you get too much flowering really early on in the year it's often a sign of trouble. But if they're 3+ months old and still indoors its common for them to flower even if they've got lots of room in the pot. Annum varieties seem to be the worst for it. I am still taking my flowers off of my peppers until they're in their final pots :)
@annickaprevander98639 ай бұрын
Hi JB, what nice plants you have. I have grown peppers inside under lighting, they are vigorous and green. Now to my question.. How come you manage to get what I think are lice... tiny little white crawlers in abundance.. every year.. it's about 20 degrees and now that it's mild outside I open the window so I get circulation among my seeds. Greetings from Sweden ❤
@JBNat9 ай бұрын
Hmm I'm not sure what lice you mean? Could they be aphids?

Great question! I don't strictly know (we don't have one of those fancy meters) but I think my big grow light is probably around £1.50 a week. Those blue lights are probably about 15-20p a week. Worth picking off the flowers at this stage I think, try and keep their energy on the leaves. Do they need potting up? They do sometimes set out the occasional flower when they shouldn't!
@benjaminh.76989 ай бұрын
@@JBNat Yes, I already cut them. I used normal potting mix for tomatoes & paprikas. And I’m going to pot them up, as soon as I get my mycorrhiza order. And then I will use a potting mix that is more closely to yours and ChiliChumps :-) Light (15 hours) & warmth (20c at night, 24c at day) should be ok. My chilis are quite small and bushy so I also raised the light last week quite a bit. It’s my first time growing chilis, so I’m learning a lot 😅

This year is my first year ordering from chilli chump, my first showings didn't germinate and I've had mixed germination with the 2nd sowing. This has delayed my peppers and chilli's this year. I'm sure it'll be fine in the end though. What is your light schedule?

That is so shocking, which varieties? And have you let him know? I've honestly never had a bad seed from him. Lights go on when we get up and off when we go to sleep, so it can vary a bit but usually around 6-7am til 10-11pm.

small tip. do away with the ratchets and carabiners holding the light. you can easily rig up a piece of wire or something of the sort, will gain you another four or five inches of clearance and allow the light to the ones on the outer edge as they're being blocked by the height of the central ones. it'll make a world of difference as you don't want to stall them now before being able to get them out to your glasshouse
