There is a special place in a special HELL for such CLODS. I have known and loved the song all my long life, I saw the movie last year on a flight back from England where we attended the funeral of my wife’s younger sister. What with that and Covid it was a melancholy time, but this glorious song saved us.

Most film directors don't know how to use music in their work. Here, with his superb use of this beautiful song sung by Renee Fleming, McDonagh has joined the greats like Weir, Beresford, Noyce et al. in showing that music and film can be merged to great emotional effect. Of the many ways this film transcended the ordinary, the music played a large part in making it pure art.

My father came to America from Ireland in 1928. This was one of his favorite pieces. Can anyone doubt why.

Beautiful voice and nice choice of music for this powerful film. Music and lyrics written by the Anglo-Irish composer Thomas Moore. Haunting song with much emotion.

It's still such BS that it didn't win. Probably the best movie of the past ~6 years, hands down.

Last Rose of Summer 'Tis the last rose of summer, Left blooming alone; All her lovely companions are faded and gone; No flow'r of her kindred, No rosebud is nigh To reflect back her blushes, Or give sigh for sigh. I'll not leave thee, thou lone one, To pine on the stem; since the lovely are sleeping, Go, sleep thou with them; Thus kindly I scatter Thy leaves o'er the bed Where thy mates of the garden Lie senseless and dead. So soon may I follow, When friendships decay, And from love's shining circle The gems drop away! When true hearts lie wither'd, And fond ones are flown, Oh! who would inhabit This bleak world alone?

The song is Irish. Ireland does melancholy better than everybody. The author Tom Moore saw his 10 children die in childhood. The lyrics sum up his anguish. The melody is an even older Irish air from the 1700's.
