When we first started working on our 1971 Super Beetle we noticed a bit of rust in the left side heater channel. The more and more work we did, the more rust we discovered so as opposed to patching most of the channel we decided to remove the entire piece and replace it. Follow along with our tech as he cuts, grinds and tears out the old rusted heater channel.

This is the biggest challenge and fear of any beetle enthusiast! A lot of work for something that is not seen but necessary...

I just tackled this job last fall and it was very daunting. There's only one or two videos on KZbin walking you through the process, but they're not the best. Once you get going, it's not too hard. Just make sure those doors line up whenever you bolt the body back on the pan! Thanks Jbugs!

No problem at all. We're cover the door opening when we weld everything back together. For sure it was a bit of a wing and a prayer as we didn't have the door in place. Fortunately we checked during body work and it is good to go thanks to all our measuring.

It's coming soon, we had a bit more to deal with than just the heater channel so we broke it up into 4 shorter segments rather than 1 LONG one.

A convertible will have the body reinforcement rail below the heater channel. Removing it, repairing it as needed it will be part of the repair typically as if the heater channel is rusted out, chance are the rail will be too as it sit under the channel.
