Great job James. Learned more in general about engines, carbs, recoil, and given a little patience most machines would run right and be usable instead of throwing them away... really liked the explanation about the leaning out the carb and overheating the engine. You have great patience. Thank you!

Picked the same blower in my travels on a "FREE" pile beside the road. Found the primer bulb fuel lines backwards, clue, air bubbles from filter in the tank. But still have a bone dry spark plug, so gas isn't making it through the carb to the piston. So I've ordered a new carb, so the fight goes on. Anyway thanks for the video.

My old neighbor was an airplane engine mechanic. He couldn’t figure out two cycle engines to save his life. For some odd ass reason, the small line is the inlet line, the big one is the return. Things that make you go hmmmm. The proper term is a purge valve. The short side is the suction side, it pulls fuel thru the carb, not pushing it into the carb.

Help? My Ryobi backpack blower is still somewhat new, fuel/oil mix is fresh, used twice successfully in the last 3 weeks. However it ran for like 2 mins and then now it won’t start and given that it’s still new I ruled out the fuel and air and decided to troubleshoot the ignition, I didn’t see a visible spark on the removed plug, So I took the risk and touch the spark plug on the spark should be and the shock was very weak like 1/4 of what I could get a stronger static spark at the playground on the McDonald’s play slide. Could that be a bad ignition coil too?
@jcondon15 жыл бұрын
Sounds like it could be a spark issue if you are not seeing it jump on the plug. First try another spark plug and chec the gap. I have a video troubleshooting run issues kzbin.info/www/bejne/jpKQkp6HZb2fZqs. About 6 minutes in, I discuss troubleshooting spark. Could still be fuel, potentially the fuel filter fell off in the tank. Also easy to try a little starting fluid to see if you get any ignition. The order to check things in from most common problem to least is 1) fuel, 2) spark, 3) timing and 4) compression.

Ryobi back pack - my guess is a Mexican owned it and left it on his trailer all the time and rain and snow got into it. Unlike us, they never store their tools away, properly. Growling bearings and bad seals are also a possibility, as is water in the carb. You can also bet everything on it is basically connected wrong. They can get things running with duct tape and vice grips but they usually do not run for very long.

Excellent video James. Thanks. I have this same machine, fortunately in much better condition. I am having trouble with it and I have nowhere near your skill with small engines. Once my machine warms up it won't run full throttle. When I try to give it fuel it stalls out. Where should I start troubleshooting? Thanks.
@jcondon16 жыл бұрын
Usually that is a carburetor issue. Either the jets need to be adjusted or it may not be getting enough fuel. The carburetors on leaf blowers have a diaphragm pump what uses engine vacuum pressure to pump fuel. It is common for that part to wear out and stiffen up or tear. That diaphragm can be replaced. Often it is not much more to buy a Chinese clone carburetor, but sticking with OEM is usually better. Does it get better or worse if you give it a little choke?
@richmoulder49016 жыл бұрын
Thanks again James. I have to admit I have not been good about keeping fuel fresh. I am on a mission to correct this going forward. If the carby is fouled, it's my fault. I think replacing it is maybe a good idea. Do you know where I can buy the OEM part? Thanks, Rich @@jcondon1
@jcondon16 жыл бұрын
Rich Moulder eReplacementParts, Jacks Small Engine and PartTree are good places for OEM. OEM will cost around $70. I went with a knockoff for $15. Either way you will need a Pac-Man tool to adjust the jets. A new card is set to a good starting point (usually), but it most likely will not run right unless it is adjusted to your engine. Make sure you get the model number on your blower when matching up the part. There are several versions of this blower all called BP42.
@richmoulder49016 жыл бұрын
Hi James. I got back to it today. Fresh fuel, even changed the spark plug that was about 5 years old. Still having the same issue. To answer your question it gets better when I give it some choke. Do you recommend trying to adjust the carb or just replace it at this point? By the way I bought a pac man tool. If adjusting the carb is worth the effort, it appears I need to detach it from the body because the fuel tank is in the way. Any concerns about it having loose while I run it and with play with the adjustments? Thanks again, Rich @@jcondon1
@jcondon16 жыл бұрын
Rich Moulder if you have the tool try adjusting. The carb must be tight on the machine before running and adjusting. Choking it gives it more fuel (but less air also not as much power) so it is a carb issue if choking fixes it. You might be able to remove the bolts on the bottom holding the engine to the backpack. The fuel tank is attached to the backpack so you might be able to slide it away enough to run (fuel line may not be long enough). Before adjusting turn each jet in counting the number of turns so you know where it was before adjusting. Then turn back to where they were and start it. You will need to turn out to allow more fuel in. Either way you will have to adjust your new carb so should try adjusting the old first. There are a lot of good videos that detail how to adjust two cycle engine carburetors. Would watch a few of those before trying. You do not want it running lean. Engine will overheat and not enough oil will make it in the engine potentially causing damage.

Marcos Morales the fuel line that comes from the fuel tank that has the fuel filter on it goes to the bottom on the carburetor (side opposite the choke). The other line from the fuel tank goes to the long port on the purge bulb. Then connect the short port from the purge bulb to the top port on the carburetor. The idea is that the purge bulb pulls the fuel through the carb. Originally I connected it to push the fuel through which caused the carb to leak.

It's smart to use Premium gasoline in small engines. Unlike an automobile it will probably cost only a few dollars a year more. If you bought the Ryobi BP42, return it and get a new one next season. They die after a year or so. Ryobi hillbillies will guide you through all the things that could be wrong. That process requires buying part they suggest, waiting for part, installing new part, calling Ryobi when that didn't fix the problem. I went through this 4 step/week long process-At least 5 times: Air filter(1 week), fuel filter(1 week), carb cleaned, carb replaced with a new one, new fuel and air lines installed, new plug. Over 12 hours and ~$100 into this and I give up. Ryobi sucks. Their hillbilly helpers are in the business of getting you to buy all these solutions!! Thet don't get paid to actually help you with your problem. If the Chinese blew leaves, they'd make a better leafblower. They don't-Ryobi BP42 is a planned obsolescence issue. This piece of crap is actually a terrific leaf blower when it works. Show me a homeowner who was able to fix their BP42 and I'll blow your leaves for a season. Also...when you're on the phone with them and they ask you for the serial number on your blower, you'll see that the serial number is sleazily hid by an impossible to read font size. DO NOT PULL THE STICKER OFF TO READ THE NUMBER!! It voided my warranty
