You inspired me to take a trip to Guadalajara and Ajijic last fall and I saw for myself that the image we have of Mexico is very wrong. I could see myself retiring there and your videos help greatly. Your tour of the medical and care facilities help tremendously in alleviating fears of the unknown. You are helping a lot of people!

Wow those pole musicians/acrobats! I have a cousin who lives and works in Mexico, she's been living there for about 10 years and loves her job and the people. She's living in Merida area. She blends in well with the locals as she looks Mexican yet born and raised in Canada and she became fluent in Spanish very quickly. However, she did come back to Canada for breast cancer treatment under her Mexican doctor's advice as we have better treatment for her particular cancer.

I am sorry to hear about your cousin, I hope she is doing fine by now. Too pitty she had that advice, maybe Mérida have not enough medical resources for a breast cáncer, but, México City, Guadalajara, Monterrey NL, I am pretty sure they have the best of the best, public and private. In México City at least, we have the National Institute of Cancer, one of the best in latinamerica and is public and free.

I get so sick of the “real Mexico” comments too. 😆 My Mexican friend was telling me how we might be getting a Walmart in Guanajuato and she was like, “Oh I hope so!” But yeah, if I go to the grocery store and not the Mercado, I’m not having a legitimate Mexican experience. LOL. Surprise, Mexicans shop at Walmart and grocery stores and Costco and they eat at Chili’s too. Oh and Starbucks. It’s not just for the expats.

I’m Mexican and I go to Costco, Walmart, eat at Chili’s, etc. Nothing wrong with that. And yes, they’re here for the locals not immigrants. What I don’t get is US and in general rich country immigrants going to a foreign country and settling in the same place and surrounding themselves with the same people and recreating the same community they had back home.
@erinstravels
@erinstravels 5 жыл бұрын
@@pablovi77 That makes sense. I think it's important to do everything you can to integrate into your new community. But I will say, it's hard to live somewhere as a "foreigner" and sometimes you want something familiar. (Immigrants do this everywhere.) I think language makes it harder sometimes. I've been working hard at learning Spanish since we moved to Mexico, but I'm nowhere near fluent, so I'm very limited in that regard, especially because I live in Guanajuato, where there's not a ton of English spoken. So I can understand why some people would end up in communities of people who are very much like them, especially if the language barrier prevents them from fully integrating. But I do agree that making an effort is important!

I lived in Ajijic 30 years ago and loved it. I speak some Spanish and was able to communicate sufficiently. But I got amoebas so bad I had to leave. I went back 4 tears ago and it was not the same. Too many expats. It didn’t seem like the Mexican Ajijic I was at years ago. Expats seem to be in abundance and have created a more Americanized culture It just seemed more harsh than it was when I was there before. The sweet, peaceful innocent Mexican culture I experienced before seemed to have become diluted! Dissipated. Still there’s an undeniable special energy there that’s still evident. I recall thinking exactly that when I was there a few years ago. Even with so many expats. I prefer to relate to Mexicans. My best friend was a Mexican psychologist when I lived there. Tarantulas none. I've seen one about the size of a quarter in 18 years and that was hiking in the mountains. Scorpions .... one a month in the house. :)

Hola Mr. JC Travel. I just want to let you know that my parents are from Santa Cruz de la Soledad. Opposite to Ajijic. I haven't been back to Chapala since I was 18 (32 years ago). I really enjoy your videos, please keep them coming.

I see the lights of Santa Cruz across the lake at night from my bedroom window. Your name is interesting to me. When I bought my second property there was an old tenaco on the roof with a brand (like a cow brand) on it. It was JC and I ask a lot of older Mexicans in the neighborhood about it. It was a cabin belonging to Jose Castellanos who owned all of this part of Ajijic back in the 1940's. Maybe I'm living in your great grandpa's casa. Also, I know Manuel Castellanos who lives in Santa Cruz. He was the contractor who built part of my house here. Relative? :)

@@JCTravelStories interesting. But no I don't think so. But will ask my mom. My dad passed years ago. My mom travels to Santa Cruz end of April for the fiestas and stays until the end of May. Castellanos is a very common surname in the state of Jalisco. Will ask my mom about Manuel Castellanos. She knows everyone.

So much unusual history. I flew Braniff on my first flight form DFW to London-Gatwick back in 1977. I had plans to buy Tom Landry's home on the southside, but it sold 2 days before I was able to get there. Wasn't meant to be, but still plan on making the area an off-season relaxation spot. Just one more year. I tend to go restaurants that cater to the locals. You should try Birrierías Chololo just south of the airport. Very good roasted goat platters with frijoles y arrozo. Also, serves 400 Conejos Mezcal which is muy bueno.

We're at an alpine altitude ... 5200 ft and a tropical latitude ... next to the largest lake in Mexico ... 80km long ...that mitigates the highs and lows of temperature. Its about 75 to 80 degrees all year around. The humidity is never hot and sticky because of the altitude. The climate is referred to as Eternal Spring.

Earn your living in the USA. Create a passive income that you no longer have to do daily work for, or develop an income that is location independent ....like a computer job, or worst case get old enough for Social Security, and THEN come live in Mexico where your dollars can not only support you, but help the local people and economy as well. This is not a theory. I've put my money where my mouth is. :)
