You're making perfect sense when you advocate making your money in the USA and taking it elsewhere for a better standard of living. And there are those idiots who say that's unpatriotic or cheating the USA. Nope. It helps the USA. I still pay US taxes and don't use any of the services those taxes pay for. People who live well in Mexico on a low income could be a burden on public services if they stayed in the US. Also, their US dollars spent in Mexico help local Mexicans and Mexico's economy. Re MX mail: When I arrived in MX in 2007, mail from MX ↔️ US was 10 - 14 days Los Angeles, Las Vegas - Ciudad del Carmen. This was first class flats, less than a pound, with a tracking number. It was the same when I moved to Campeche in 2011. All of a sudden, approximately, in 2014, transit times, especially to MX increased to 4 - 8 weeks. If US mail has a tracking number, you can track on USPS website. Once the item enters the CorreoMX system you have to go to their website to track.

I really enjoy listening to your stories. Recently I was in and out of the car running errands. As I got back into the car and looked at the sky through the windshield, the sky had just been "painted" in a huge lattice-work pattern. If I saw a couple of trails, it "might" be considered contrails, but a whole sky full of lattice-work definitely looks more like chemtrails. As to the Post Office in Mexico, I haven't yet figured out how they operate. Twice I have stayed more than 3 months at a time in Monterrey, as well as other visits. I have never seen a postal person. I asked my daughter-in-law if they ever have home delivered postal service and she said no. I asked then how do you get your bills? She said some of them are delivered in person by a guy on a motorcycle - directly from the company, ie, electric, or whatever. She can pay her cell bill at any convenience store. At the time they were renting and the landlord came by in person every month. But no postal service. However she did receive packages from FedEx and DHL. When I went downtown I visited the large and beautiful building of the big Post Office, but I still don't understand its function. I think you can actually mail out letters there but there doesn't seem to be any cohesive delivery service at all. Like you said the guy told you that you could pay the gas bill 4 months later. It's just a different system, much more laid back.

I once went to the big beautiful Post Office near the historical center in Guadalajara to mail a postcard. You couldn't get a stamp and mail the card at the same window. Had to wait in line twice. :)

You are correct on the restricted zone property issue. I rent a condo in Puerto Vallarta and my next door neighbor is a young couple who inherited the deed to their property from the estate of a deceased parent and have all the rights of a direct owner in the non restricted zone. One piece of advise they pass on in buying property in Mexico, especially one in trust to the bank, is to be sure to get a lawyer fluent in both languages so there is no misunderstandings, and to make sure to search the title before buying, to be sure the sellers actually own the property & there are no liens.

Good advice. The transaction should be supervised by a Notario ... a special lawyer who is authorized by the federal government of Mexico to review real estate transactions.

A neighbor's daughter(mexicans), alongside her husband bought a home like most people buy clothes or shoes, got the money you go, make your purchase and the sales clerk gives you your receipt of payment. This young couple paid up front for a home $140,000 pesos, this was 12 years ago in 2006, upon 3 to 4 months later they found out the hard way, that house was owed to the bank, so it seems the original owner scammed them the money, fled and they were evicted from the home. You'd think it wouldn't be common sense to ask around, family, friends or neighbors on the steps to buying a home?

You should google this .... Points South Chapala Edition. its a magazine with pics and prices and ads from realty companies. Regarding down and closing costs .... most homes in Mexico are purchased for cash. Some limited financing maybe available, but it is not like the US where nearly all homes are mortgaged. You need to contact a realtor and ask about closing costs, etc relative to a particular property or price range. Restricted zone different for dual citizenship? If you have Mexican citizenship, yes there are differences.

I'm glad you mentioned the property ownership part. When I lived in San Diego, there was a news item, about 15 or 20 years ago, about a group of expats living on the pacific coast of Baja. They built high end houses in a community there and the indiginous people went to court to claim the land as their sacred land. They won and the government gave them the land and evicted the Americans with no recompense. Turns out they only had what amounts to a 99 year lease and they were out the money they spent on building on the property.

The rest of that 20 year old story is that the developer scammed them, not the country of Mexico. It was ejido land (kinda like Indian reservations in the US ... which are sovereign territory) and the developer did not have clear title to the land. It had little to do with the 99 year lease deal, except that all property in the restricted zone ..... near the beach and the border ... is held that way. Most of the country is not restricted. Title is held by direct deed.

Hay JC; working on Capital one 360 account which I heard you talk about 8 months ago. So, when I begin living in Mexico, must have US address for Mail. I thought I would stay with my bank in US. Then open a Capital one checking/saving account. Next, my pension will automatically be deposited to my bank account. Then, do a zelle from my bank to my Capital One360 account. While in Mexico find a atm that accepts Capital One card & not get hit with any fees/charges from US or Mexico side. What do you think.

I (US citizen, Mexico visitor) have property in Cancun with a 30 year permit. Maybe there's different lengths of time in different states. It's a long time, regardless. One warning is to make sure the names on the beneficiary are spelled exactly correctly. In the US a name change is no big deal (generally, as far as I know), but in Mexico it's more strict. Marriage, divorce, misspellings can delay the paperwork. Sometimes it's the same with bank accounts. I had to modify some bank paperwork because of a missing N on the end of my first name. Another time, they bounced a check because my signature wasn't exactly the same (looked the same to me, but there was a tiny gap between two letters where the pen skipped).

Yes, I've dealt with those things .... a redo of paper work because of my signature being slightly different than my passport, a check refused for very little reason, and I have had an addendum added to my Mexican will because my daughter got divorced and her name changed.

There is a place in San Juan Cosala called the Racquet Club. Its a housing area here 4 KM west of Ajijic that has a big pool and I think there are organized swims there. Many of the homes in the area have pools and there are a couple of water exercise groups that I know of. :)

We use IMSS to get Lynn's month meds and for catastrophic insurance. For small regular stuff ... we pay out of pocket. Also, because we spend time traveling in our RV in the US, we maintain our Meicare and a suppliment for coverage in the US. Going there if IMSS was a problem with a major illness is still an option for us.

Jerry, I want to answer your viewers question about running an Ebay business from Mexico. I believe the question was about sending out packages and not receiving. I live in Los Mochis Sinaloa and I run an Ebay business. I have sent out hundreds of package to the US and worldwide using the Mexican Postal Service SEPOMEX. Their service has improved greatly in the past year or so. How the system works is like this, no matter where the package is sent from, it has to go to the Capital for processing. If a package is sent from Tijuana, it is sent to the Capital for processing then back to the US. Most of the time will be getting the package from your home town to the Capital for the processing. Once Mexican Customs receives the package it takes around a week to get it sent to the US, or whatever country it is going to. You will see on the tracking number the date the package was processed by Mexican Customs and then the tracking number can be used on that countrys tracking system. Generally it has been taking anywhere from 15 to 25 days from the process date to delivery in the US, but a lot of that is the USPS bouncing it around from facility to facility all across the country. If you or your viewer needs to know anything else, please let me know.

@@JCTravelStories No I don't. The cost to send a very small package using any of those services is more than the value of what I am sending. The cost with Estafeta or FedEx to the US depends on the current exchange rate, and lately that has been really high. Also it is my understanding that with FedEx, they charge you taxes on every package coming in or that they deliver in the US, even though the law says that any package under $300.00 USD is exempt.

Yes, we pay for Medicare and a supplement in the US even tho it won't pay in Mexico. We travel in our RV in the States for a few months each year. We use my brother's address in South Dakota. You can get virtual addresses. Google this .... American's Mailbox.

I have a friend who has a 99 year lease on a 5 acre property in Mexico, right on the beach. It costs him like $65 a month.

Its actually a fee to the bank that administers the paper work, not a rent payment. And that "lease" which isn't really a lease, more like a trust deed, is renewable and passes to his heirs upon his death. The restricted zone where this is required for non Mexicans is approximately 50 km from the ocean and/ or 100km from the border. In the rest of the country anyone of any nationality can own property by direct deed. I own two of them.

I will be renting the land, but own the home. I believe they have laws to protect me from loosing hold of the land. Would you mind addressing retirement social security income. I will be moving from Oregon and am concerned about my income from that. Is it still just deposited in the US Bank? Is it okay to live in Mexico with a Mexico address and collect Social Security. My Social Security Benefit is direct deposited into a USBank account in Portland, Oregon. It has been for 11 years. No problem whatsoever. Disability from a federal plan would also be no problem, unless it is administered through a state program. If you're receiving disability from the State of Oregon, you must live in the State of Oregon.

I was told by my local gun shop in Portland that the only handgun calibers that you can legally own in Mexico are calibers that are not used by the Army or Police. That limits you to .38 Super, almost exclusively. Since .22s are used by the Army or the Police, .22s are illegal to own in Mexico. So it's not calibers up to .38. Bear in mind, this is hearsay from a gun shop in the US and I would like to know if this is true because I favor purchasing a .22 over a .38 Super. I recently got my permanent resident card in Mexico and am considering a trip to Mexico City in the future to the only gun store in Mexico, run by the Army.

+Alan McKean .... Article 11 of Ley Federal de Armas de Fuego y Explosivos lists prohibited "military firearms" in México. shotguns larger than 12ga or with a barrel shorter than 25". We never left Mexico for more than a day or two at a time for 10 years ... partly because from age 55 to 65 before we had Medicare, we had no health insurance in the US. We now have been fortunate enough to return to our love of the RV life style. We feel we have the best of both worlds. Since we bought this larger more comfortable RV we're spending 4 to 5 months a year traveling in the US. Mexico is home and will be when we're too old to drive a 40' RV. :)

Keep your US bank account. I assume you have direct deposit. If not get it. Then get a Capital One 360 or a Charles Schwab no fee online account. Use a debit card down here for purchases and accessing cash at ATMs.

Its noticeable for a couple of days if we've been gone for a month or so. I think it takes about ten days for more oxygen carrying red corpuscles to develop in your blood stream. It works to my advantage when we go to the beach .... I can play volleyball with 20 year olds for a couple of days.

I plan on visiting Mexico but I would like to drive down I'd like to drive to Cancun in Mexico City I live in Wisconsin anything you could tell me that would provide me safety would be great I hear it's pretty rough and I'm not sure that it's even possible

Its very possible. Once you get 100 km south of the border its a very different country. Don't be afraid of the police. Don't worry about military inspection stops. Don't have a gun or drugs. Be respectful. Don't drive a new black Cadillac Escalade. Don't drive at night ... because cows and horses don't have tail lights. The autopistas ... toll roads are great.

I have for over twenty years not seen my name on a piece of mail. I have a lady who takes care of it. Its not a service, or mail forwarding company. She used to be my property manager and I just included my personal bills when I traveled, etc. She writes checks, has a company credit card, and sends birthday checks to my grand kids. Its all very liberating for me. If you're looking for that kind of service, google .... American's Mailbox ... in South Dakota. :)

It's very hard owning a gun legally in Mexico and if you do get to have one legally thats if you get to have one legally you can only own certain calibers i think the biggest caliber you can own is a 9mm in automatic and .38 in revolver.....

Almost got himself and a coworker shot by pulling his gun out on the wrong guy during a traffic altercation. Got his whole van shot up and didn't fire one shot. I can't speak for all of Mexico, but nobody much cares if you park on the street around here. Nothing like needing to stealth camp in the States. :) I've stayed at Walmarts, Pemex stations in Mexico. Traded a pork roast out of my freezer for a spot at a restaurant one night with my 33' Southwind after having dinner there. Cops aren't a problem. City ordinances aren't a problem.

This is not my experience. I have ordered things from dx.com ... a Chinese company many times. It takes 1 day to get to Mexico City, and another 4 weeks to arrive at my home in Ajijic, but its never disappeared.

Hi Jerry, Thanks for all the great videos. I left a comment on another of yours (with lots of typos it turns out) that I was going to be in your neck of the woods around Jan. 20th and wanted to buy you a drink. Now I realize you are most likely not going to be around Mexico at that time. Too bad but maybe next time. I'm retired, living in near Sacramento, CA and have been gobbling up all the Mexico video I can get my hands on while also trying to learn Spanish. Well, that is going to take a while but I will get there. Got a lot of dental work done in Guadalajara 8 years ago for a fraction of what Doctor's wanted here and was happily surprised that Mexico has many good Dentists and medical facilities. I did not get kidnapped, robbed, or even given a funny look. After all the baloney we hear in the US and all the dental work I was going to have done by a Doctor I had never met I was a bit stressed. But it all turned out great. Anyway, depending on how my upcoming 6 week trip to Mexico goes, if I can figure out how to get rid of most of my stuff (I have A LOT of hobbies) and how to get the rest down to Mexico safely, I hope to move down and rent something for a while as I decide if it is the place for me. I just finished a month long trip to Europe recently and it was so easy to get around with Google maps and the great transit systems they have there that I am pretty spoiled. Unfortunately, I don't think it will be quite as easy in Mexico. Every time I ask Google how to get from one Mexican point to another, it says it has no idea. In Europe I was able to get full directions including where to walk to catch a tram or bus, what stop I had to get off at and where I had to walk from there get to where I wanted to go. I am expecting it won't be so easy since Google seems to have no ideas about bus schedules etc. in Mexico. Did find an app called Moovit that seems to have some of the info though. Right now I am planning to get around inter-city by bus and inner-city by Uber and foot. In some cases, I'll rent a car if more convenient. I will be going from Guadalajara through Chapala, Morelia, Guanajoto, Queretaro, San Miguel de Allende, Mexico City, Puebla City and maybe Oaxaca. I am keeping the schedule flexible. Any ideas on online sources of bus schedules etc? Any comments on traveling in general not covered in all your videos? Perhaps most importantly, I am into the arts, especially ceramics and painting. Do you know anyone I could talk to in Chapala about where they get clay, how I get 60 amps at 240 volts for a kiln, and other related questions. I was really hoping to pick your brain while I am there but I guess it will have to wait. Sorry for the long comments but that is what I have on my mind today! Thanks, Rob

An old guy like you making videos, hey you're pretty good. For myself, at 60yrs old, I am an American+Canadian citizen, I bought a small condo in Cabo, Baja peninsula, for investment or part-time living, don't know yet. And don't forget, you have to pay CASH. There is usually no financing or mortgage available for foreigners, at least that's my experience.

If your father is a citizen of Mexico, you have advantages in the immigration process. Anybody can buy land in the restricted zone. Citizens hold title differently. You can have dual citizenship in more than one country.

As legal permanent residents of Mexico, we are not allowed to have foreign plated (US) vehicles in the country. The motor home and Suzuki jeep stay in the states and we fly back and forth.
