Noting the conversation below, about friendships, the controversial friendship was with Arno Breker, for whom I understand without Arno, Jean would probably have been killed by the Germans at one point. The problem was that Arno was producing statuary that the Reich found very suitable for their..."ouvre." Heroic, ultra stylized figures with unusual detail. Fascist? You decide. I remember seeing head sculpts of blacks by Arno.
