On a galactic level, French IS an obscure language, considering that less than 50 percent of ONE planet's residents utilize it as their official language. In addition, the Federation is mostly made up of English-speaking representatives, and the Federation is often the first human-owned organization to make first contact with non-human species. As a result, English is usually the first human language that non-humans are exposed to, leading to its widespread use by many species across the galaxy, and indirectly causing other human languages (such as French) to become obscure.

He would have learned British pronunciations and vocabulary, thus giving him a British accent. You’ll notice in Season 4 when we meet Robert and Rene that they speak with similar accents. Whether it's influence diminishes or not by the time of TNG, it is still kinda funny to consider French an "obscure" language surely someone who's all about in depth analysis to the degree Data is would see that it's hardly been an obscure language in the broad scheme of human history whether he has emotions or not. Latin is a dead language now, but it certainly wasn't obscure in its time; so the writing here is a little wonky in that regard. But it's still a funny scene so whatever. Any excuse to put Picard in an awkward position. lol

+Noah LeFoot not necessarily true. That prediction might become true. Take for example my native Portugal. It's the home of one of the most spoken languages in the world. Yet 25% of the Portuguese Nation now speaks English as well. Given time, the might statistic might increase to 50% or a hundred. What then happens to the original language, does it fuse with English to make a new one, die out and get replaced, or will the trend get reversed? Now consider this, it's happening all over the world and in the last 500 years the world has lost hundreds of old languages. New Guinea just recently lost an ancient language and is poised to lose another dozen. Languages mind you, that were widespread originally. If that is not enough, look at Occitan, used to be as widespread as French, but is now dying off. If you consider portuguese again, it's more wide spoken than French in the world, yet it's slowly being displaced by English.

That's a rather idiotic statement on Data's part. Not only was French the main lingua franca for most of Western history, but in this excerpt he uses no less than 15 words that originate from French, including "society", "code", "honour", "example", "obscure", and "language". In fact you could say that calling French "obscure" is a contradiction in terms.

Warriors won prestige by acts of bravery in the face of the enemy...Any blow struck against the enemy counted as a coup, but the most prestigious acts included touching an enemy warrior with the hand, bow, or with a coup stick then escaping unharmed. Counting coup could also involve stealing an enemy's weapons or horses tied up to his lodge in camp. Risk of injury or death was required to count coup."

Technically this illustrates the US hatred for any 2nd language except for Spanish which the US school systems ram down kids throats from day 1. It helps them to remain industry fodder. In TV, Movies, and Plays the American culture has slammed on all languages while pushing it's citizens to insist everyone also speak English. Most other countries have citizens that can not only speak 2nd languages but 3rd and 4th while most of us here are brainwashed into thinking English is the beat all language. Even though English is technically more a "subjective" language than a scientific "objective" one. That is why so many politicians, court systems, and businesses all have such trouble communicating in the United States.
@elayne347210 жыл бұрын
Yay! Down with the MAN! Wooooooo! Or maybe it's because the people in the countries you're talking about live within driving distance of those 3-4 other languages. The US was founded primarily by English-speaking colonists and the only foreign languages nearby were spoken by people they regarded as "savages." If people in the US grew up in the type of region that people in Europe grow up in, more focus would be put on learning multiple languages. This is evidenced by your own admission that Spanish is spoken in the US, and in fact it is doing so on an increasing basis as more and more people who speak Spanish natively enter the country. Our neighbors to the north primarily speak English, with French as a distant second based on their population makeup. Our neighbors to the south overwhelmingly speak Spanish. Not at all coincidentally, it is those three languages we have traditionally written instructions in and distributing marketing materials in. Spanish and French are also the two most prominent languages taught in school, starting around the 7th or 8th grade. It's true that European schools have a larger focus on non-English languages earlier on, but that's because it's a part of daily life in that region. It doesn't mean there's a freaking conspiracy to eliminate all other languages. In fact, to my knowledge the only people in North America that have tried to do that are the French-speaking Canadians who passed laws restricting the distribution of materials that weren't in French. So maybe do a little research and quit listening to the other idiots on the internet who speak way before they think.

English is a language of global importance with or without the US, I don't think that can be argued against. However I do definitely agree that there is a lot of importance to being bilingual that's maybe played down both memetically in culture, and in our education system. Many foreign school systems place a far greater and immediate exepctation to know a second language or at least be familiar with it on a near mandatory scale. At least a little bit of english (as said, it is an important language), but depending on the country possibly another as well. I definitely can't say that same expectation exists here in the US. Like said above (oh man though please separate paragraphs lol.) though there's obviously a reason for why that came to pass historically, but it's definitely there regardless. In the modern age I definitely think higher emphasis on secondary language would help a lot in an increasingly global society.

***** Oh please do you have any idea how much local governments in the US spend on Gov. papers to be printed in as many languages as possible? I know here in Houston you can get anything the Government prints in over 100 languages... It cost 10's of millions for the city alone not counting school stuff. That's the job of the local school systems which also spend untold amounts of money on the SAME THING... But no they are pushing people into English... if that was the case they wouldn't do the sort of things I just outlined...

Does anyone else think that English is arguably the best country in the world for, basically, one reason? WE DON'T HAVE GENDERS IN OUR LANGUAGE. Seriously, who the fuck decided that "farmer" and "house" are feminine, but "pork" and "drink" are masculine? I know most other languages don't have genders either, but...seriously. That is single-handedly the hardest part of going from learning English to (most) other languages, like French or Italian. Genders, and the changes to rules and conjugations for said genders, are simply maddening.

I'll agree that it is far easier to soak than to write. To compare to French, if you say something incorrectly in french threes a good chance it sounds exactly like some other form or some other words entirely. In English however you can say a completely wrong word (irregardless) and everyone will know what you mean

I love English and all that, but it is a huge mess, virtually impossible for a non-native to speak correctly (even when they think they are). Then again, Latin languages are fucked up beyond belief as well. So are the Scandinavian languages - which suffer from a vocabulary the size of a restaurant menu. Conclusion... every language is really fucked up. If it was up to me, I would scrap them all and make one damn logical language. Ofc, it's not up to me :P
