I am behind , I just found your videos this summer LOL. I love the JEAN"S BLOCK PARTY 2018 and today O am sewing my very FIRST BLOCK. I am going to try to get 4 or 5 Blocks done today. But if I don't I know your great videos are there for anytime to sew along and learn. Thank you Jean so much. Going be a great day to sew. It's like fall weather here in WV finally . I'm very slow when it comes to sewing a new project I try so hard to be so very careful when cutting I check double check and check again before I take my rotary cutter to my fabric because I have messed up cuts before for NOT checking more than once before cutting and thank you for distressing that so much , Jean you are so helpful to me and I am sure so many many more quilters. So here I go starting the Fist Block, oh and I have to say your up to date videos posted Sept.2018 with your friend visiting I just love her , beautiful lady , you are truly blessed , thank you for caring the videos with her .Well everyone have a great weekend.Linda A Toler, WV

OK - you say to pin - thats easy I do but sometimes it is still off. I have heard that there are pins that are very skinny - should I try to find those??? I pray you don't mind me asking you questions. Many Blessings & Thanks for doing the Blocks. Eve

You can ask as many questions as need be!! :) I suppose a thinner pin would work better, but I find the Dritz yellow ball/head pins work fine for me. Just be careful and pin precisely and sew slowly and you should be good! :)

Question pls Jean: Can you fold ALL or 2 of the Fat Quarters and cut it at the same time??? Will is make a differece because of the thickness? I will be honest about your video...... I have been doing this one year and I have learned via KZbin! My comment about your tutorial.....Where were you one year ago?? I needed this - Believe me I just say that to mean - WOW - GREAT JOB!!! Keep like this - in one year beginners will be way better than I am right now. THANK YOU!!!!!! Thanks for your time - I know it is precious Eve A Ward
@jeantruelovetruelovequiltsfory7 жыл бұрын
So pleased you found me! I just do what I do and how I do it.....Even though most cutters will slice through 4 (or more) fat quarters, I would still only do two at a time at most, because the fabrics could shift and even that little shift could mean a slight difference in your block turning out. Thanks again!
@greylady26907 жыл бұрын
Funny. That's how I fold my fabric. I was showing someone else how to make a particular block and she couldn't figure out why I did that. Just makes sense to me

Every quilter or learner must be comfortable in the cutting or measuring, or stitching or ironing or folding, or washing, or not washing, or pressing in their OWN way. There are so so many ways to do any of the above...one is not better than the other, just different. Every quilter must accord another quilter the dignity to quilt the way they choose to quilt.

Jean, I ended up with 11.5 inch block. Did anyone else get this. My block# 2 came up 12.5 inches. I don't want to trim this because the snowball won't look right.
@jeantruelovetruelovequiltsfory7 жыл бұрын
Oh dear....ummmmmmm.....don't know what to say....your 1/4" seam is too big probably....really makes a difference in exact sewing and cutting. #1 block WAS more precise than #2. Perhaps try another one? All your blocks pretty much have to be the same size for the sashings to be constructed correctly. Wish I was there as a fly on the wall!! :)

Jean Truelove I did buy a 1/4 inch pressure foot and made another block. It came out perfect 12.5” I did buy a 1/4 pressure foot a few months ago and had been using it all this time. I didn’t realize it is actually a 5/16 inch pressure foot. I checked my new foot before I got started this time. What an idiot I am. Thank you for the great advice.

I am using fat quarters from Moda called 'Handmade'. Each block will have different bits of many fat quarters in them along with the white background fabric.

Done! Not too bad of matching points along the way. Then I got distracted and then played the old rippty-de-doo-dah, rippity-yey game. I got a brand new super sharp seam ripper for just this block party and put it to good use already! *le sigh*

One more question pls - Is it important to pin the way you are doing? I see most of the tutorials I follow do it the same way. Why pls? How does it assist in me getting an excellent block?
@jeantruelovetruelovequiltsfory7 жыл бұрын
I pin every which way it seems!!! Often vertically and then horizontally and then points out and the points in .....perhaps you want to really PERFECT how YOU want to pin....its just important to PIN!!! :) However you are comfortable is the way it should be done! Because stitching in quilting is pretty precise with smaller seams and many intersections or fabrics meeting, the pinning can be a crucial part of the process :)

you lost me at 3-7/8" ...
@jeantruelovetruelovequiltsfory7 жыл бұрын
Really?!?! Think One line short of 4 inches on a ruler...that is the 3 7/8" line
@reneshay7 жыл бұрын
yes..really?!?!
@mgs7836 жыл бұрын
Rene another way to see 7/8 is when you look at your ruler for just one inch you can count how many segments/lines there are that make up one inch. There will be 8 segments in one inch so if you count 7 of those eight segments you get 7/8ths of an inch. If you want one half (1/2) inch mark that would be 4 segment/lines of the eight or 4/8ths which can be reduced as a fraction to 1/2. Hope this helps as another way to visually see those fractions on your ruler.

Jean, you are in need of better lighting for the instructional portion of your video. You and what your are doing is very much in the shadows on the left hand side of the screen. It’s a bit difficult to see what you are doing. The upper right is bright, perhaps from your sewing machine light being on?
@jeantruelovetruelovequiltsfory7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for letting me know it bother you! I'll work on that and be on the lookout!! I think it IS the sewing machine light...!
@brendabiffibaldovino83067 жыл бұрын
It bothers me too when I hear that about different 1/4" 😊 1/4" is always a 1/4". They should say the seam allowance is different.
@jeantruelovetruelovequiltsfory7 жыл бұрын
I thought the same thing!! But there is the 'scant' 1/4" too. Stitched one or two THREADS smaller than the true 1/4". I suppose it could make a difference in Many seams....
@brendabiffibaldovino83067 жыл бұрын
Jean Truelove yes Jean, so when I'm in doubt I cut a tiny bit larger, maybe two or three threads and then I can adjust, mostly because I can't sew a straight line because my right eye sees like through a drop of water, wobbly wobbly... For this I cut right past outside the line in the ruler. Thank you for your response, Jean, makes me feel I have a quilting friend ♥️

Cant seem to reply to a comment someone wrote. But here goes. There are many ways to make flying geese. Lots of quilters iron the blocks in half for a straight sewing line. You hate to be negative but wrote 8 lines of it... Opinions are like quilters... all just a little bit different

Aw, I have a real fan! Thank you! When I receive (the very very few and far between) comments such as that one...I am SO happy to push the little 'remove comment/mute' button!! LOL!! I actually laughed when I was told (shock horror) that one should NEVER iron the fold.....only mark.....well, Someone better quick tell Jenny Doans she is doing it ALL WRONG, along with me!!!!!! LOL!!! I make stuff the way I make stuff ~ never professed to be a professional, but funny how my quilts always turn out okay!! :) And I am SO NOT BOTHERED if a seam or point don't quite match ~ I actually have a Life and don't sweat that small stuff! Thanks again for sticking up for me :)
@dburgd997 жыл бұрын
...LOL.. I am a real fan and watch your videos a lot. I was thinking the exact same thing about the ironing in half thing. I am not a beginner per say but not anywhere near as good as you are ! I never leave nasty comments on anyone's videos even if its not up my alley. Most of us can tell you put your heart and soul into the things you make! I take my hat off to anyone who takes the time to make videos for us to learn from .Thank you !

I thought the fold and pressing of the little square was a good idea. Saves a lot of fiddling about drawing a line. I never even thought about doing it that way. Jean has some great tricks. I've only been quilting for 2 years so I've learned something from every tutorial Jean has done for us xx
@jeantruelovetruelovequiltsfory7 жыл бұрын
Thanks Ann! I can't be bothered about the drawing a line...on every square!?!? Be here a month of Sundays! So press and be done with it!! :) But I was just told off by a lady who says I shouldn't be teaching because I don't even know how to make a 1/4" seam and that's why my points don't match....well, She told me now, didn't she?!?! LOL!!
