This always reminds me of my mom. Not that she fought the PTA but a woman raising a boy alone in the 60's and 70's had to be tough. Mom is gone, Im grown but she never complained and she took very good care of us even though we lived on a waitress salary. Josette B Medford, my mom, was one bad broad.

Me too, raised 2 boys on a waitress wages, divorced and I had to tangle with a smart aleck teacher trying to embarrass my child over his clothes in front of everyone. I grew up in the Netherlands, born in 1963. They played this song regularly on the radio as I grew up. Not speaking English as a kid I had no clue what it was about but I knew she was pissed off by the tonation of her voice. I moved to the US in 1990 but never heard that song again until I was driving around in Tallahassee a few weeks ago. I recognized this song from my childhood and listened carefully to the text. She sure was pissed off about something, the Harper Valley PTA! They don’t write songs like that anymore.

I went to school in the 70's also, and I only had one kid in my whole class who lived with only his mother. My mother when she came to school functions or would pick me up and she would see him would whisper to me in a hush tone, "Is he the one without a father?" Funny, how times change, now half the class of kids, come from broken homes and it's normal.

From one KY girl to another...my mom was a widow, her best friend moved in with us to watch my brother and I while she worked nights. Boy, no one understood that; rumor mill started that they were lesbians. As a young girl that was hard to understand. I lost friends over that. Her best friend ended up moving out years later to get married. But no one ever apologized for thinking otherwise. Remember the sitcom Kate and Allie?

I loved that the theme was hypocrisy. As a teen at the time it fit right in to how I was feeling about the adults around me and especially the women at our church! I refused to go by the time I was 13 and my Mom agreed w me. She also stood up for me when I was in the 6th grade. We'd just moved from NY to SOCAL and it was winter 1970. Back home girls were allowed to wear pants under their skirts and dresses because it was so cold. Well one day that winter in CA it was cold enough for me to wear pants under my skirt. I was immediately sent to the office and they called my Mom at work. She was livid and went to the school board meeting and read them the riot act! And they saw the error of their ways and changed the school district rules that allowed girls to wear pants just like the boys without the requirement of skirts or dresses. I was bursting w so much pride. That was our school district hypocrisy moment. Way to go Mom you Socked it to them!

I heartily agree with you on this subject, Shaunee - we need to get back to a good and noble root, if you will, in popular music - performers with talent, good songwriters, great production staff; in other words, let's make music the way it should be made - the real way!

Bolby Ballinger It isn't about being a stuck up nostalgic. Mainstreamed music is about horrible singers with nothing but gimmicks and zero talent. Music is faked with vocal tuners, rehashed out old songs, shows like American Idol, and over commercialized with crap like MTV.

The '60s and '70s was the Golden Age for pop ballads, a music form almost unheard of these days. There's Harper Valley PTA, Ode to Bill Joe, Little Willy, The Night Chicago Died, The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia, Midnight Train to Georgia, and I'll probably remember more as the day wears on.

Yes, these are all great songs - I would add to this list, Tammy Wynette's, "D-I-V-O-R-C-E." When I was divorced, some many years back, I wrote in the "memo" (on my check to my lawyer) "D-I-V-O-R-C-E" (My divorce was a friendly one, thank God). Anyway, it seems my "song-joke" went over his head - he never questioned it in any event. Cheers to all!

I was in junior high (known as middle school today) in Napa CA when this song was popular on the country charts. A new student from the Midwest lip synced it at our first rally and we were so embarrassed for her since nobody listened to this “square, hick” music. Complete silence when her performance was over. I think back about that girl now and understand what an amazing brave person she had to have been

Also, had a relative kia in SouthVietnam in mid March , 1968, at tail end of TET! Ten days bafore my 11th Bday. But that tune was cool ! SOCK IT TO ME! Flower power, peace and love! I wasn't into the hippy stuff , but did dig the chicks in their mini skirts ,gogo boots , love beeds, and other things.
