I grew up in the Netherlands, born in 1963. They played this song regularly on the radio as I grew up. Not speaking English as a kid I had no clue what it was about but I knew she was pissed off by the tonation of her voice. I moved to the US in 1990 but never heard that song again until I was driving around in Tallahassee a few weeks ago. I recognized this song from my childhood and listened carefully to the text. She sure was pissed off about something, the Harper Valley PTA! They don’t write songs like that anymore.

I went to school in the 70's also, and I only had one kid in my whole class who lived with only his mother. My mother when she came to school functions or would pick me up and she would see him would whisper to me in a hush tone, "Is he the one without a father?" Funny, how times change, now half the class of kids, come from broken homes and it's normal.

From one KY girl to another...my mom was a widow, her best friend moved in with us to watch my brother and I while she worked nights. Boy, no one understood that; rumor mill started that they were lesbians. As a young girl that was hard to understand. I lost friends over that. Her best friend ended up moving out years later to get married. But no one ever apologized for thinking otherwise. Remember the sitcom Kate and Allie?

I remember as a kid being very curious abt this time period. Having both grown up on Elvis Presley, was acutely aware of the time period he met his end in 1977, and already was in tune with my mother’s “flower child” vibes. What sealed this curiosity for me was “Sabrina The Teenage Witch” with Mellissa Joan Heart, in particular the episode where she “time traveled” and in her school they measured girls skirts. I am also quite found of how the song writers for “Hound Dog” liked the grit in which “Big Mama Thornton” spewed the lyrics as though she were cursing. As I listen to these vocals used in “Harper Vally P.TA.” I am reminded and hooked to the grit in Jeannie C. Reilly’s voice as the song intensifies. In my opinion, it is the grit that makes this song what it is. It is a key ingredient of the song - and in my opinion the song wouldn’t hold as much water without it. Bottom line - Jeannie C. Reilly at least vocally has to care - she has to realize that the woman being represented in the song is being treated unjustly, it has to piss her off down to her core. And she had to possess a willingness to fight back.

When this song came out I was in grade 12 and had a classmate that wore very short miniskirts. Her mom was a single mom and this happened for real in my small town.

@@chrisrose_krii_lun_aus That's cool, when I was an infant, Bobby Darin lived 2 houses up from ours in New Jersey but, became famous and moved before I knew who Bobby Darin was, my mom said he moved after he married Sandra Dee.

@@Musician-r5q I'll tell you another one. I worked in a Coal mine in Van Lear Kentucky near where Loretta Lynn grew up. I got to meet her once, but worked with some of her family. Also Keith Whitley and Ricky Skaggs saw many times live when I was growing up. It was like a little 100 mile radius of some greats. Keith Whitley and Rickey Skaggs were in Ralph Stanleys band and that's where i meet them. I was blessed to meet Ralph many times.

The song doesn’t hold up tbh. Not a classic by a long shot. Not compared to o music from Dolly or Johnny Cash has. Not knocking it but this is no Stevie Wonder so calm your tits lol

Not dissing on the this classic, but that's not one musician. They've either got a backing track or she is lip syncing her song -- something very common on TV and especially back then.

I had a moment last week when I had to “sock it to” the university I worked for - for having no security cameras. My car was stolen in the parking lot. Yes, they were “socked it to” to the tune of a multimillion dollars if they don’t change things.
