That is always my thought about Jeb’s reviews. Many other aviation vloggers have a very mean spirited, ‘aha! Gotcha’ approach to their travel reviews, Jeb tells it like it is without the unnecessary shaming of the hardworking employees for whom all circumstances, negative or not, are not within their control.

I had an experience with a delay just last Saturday. I was trying to get to BOS from SLC, connecting through AUS. The AUS flight out of SLC was delayed due to a pilot shortage. This was going to cause us to miss our connecting flight. Luckily, our amazing gate agent was able to rebook us on a direct flight to BOS leaving only a few hours later. We had no issues getting seats together for 3 of us, due to a second amazing gate agent. I should note, this was on Delta; they have caught a lot of negative publicity lately. However, I am a returning customer of theirs, and will absolutely continue to be after this experience. 5 stars!

I’m primarily a Delta flyer but one thing I admire about United is their explanations for delays; both on the app and from the gate agent. Knowing why a flight is delayed gives me piece of mind and makes the travel experience more tolerable. Transparency can go a long way to helping all passengers! I really hope Ed Bastian implements this on Delta soon.
@AquariusTurtle
@AquariusTurtle 2 жыл бұрын
I'm not defending Delta or United but I can give you some inside perspective... the reasons for delays are complex. It's usually some form of Reason 1A --> Reason 2A + Reason 2B ---> Reason 3A + Reason 1A ---> Reason 4A + Reason 1A. You could create a big branch diagram. There's two problems: A) how do you track each of these reasons? B) how do you decide what to tell the passengers? Every airline has this exact same problem.
@_w_w_
@_w_w_ 2 жыл бұрын
You are falling for the trap! UA give you a reason, but it's not always the same reason or right reason. Having dealt with IROPs on both, DL still does a better job at handling disruptions... especially for frequent flyers. Knowing a reason doesn't really help! The airlines are keeping their birds in the air almost at all times, so UA could claim "weather"... if it happened several flights ago and caused a cascaded delay. Given the birds are always in the air, you can technically claim "weather" for any delays as you can always trace back and find a mission that was impacted by weather. What we need in the US is consumer protection laws like EU to stop all the non-sense of made up excuses just to get out of compensating passengers.

@@_w_w_ Somethings that cause delays shouldn’t be released to the public. At least not on the spot, unless the hire ups of the airline say so. Not all passengers understand the inner workings of the airline industry, so they’ll wave off any explanation as meaningless.

We had a flight from Chicago midway to Norfolk that was scheduled for 9: 45 but was first delayed by baggage from a connecting flight. We began to push back but then it suddenly stopped. The tug apparently broke a pin or something on the landing gear while pushing back so we had to wait some more. An inspector came and we finally got in the air, but our flight was delayed by more than an hour and we got into Norfolk at 1 am. Luckily we found a taxi driver to take us to our hotel at like 3 am but is was a rough night-or should I say morning. This all happened around the end of June.

He doesn't have a separate job. Travel is his job and this looks to be a leisure trip so a delay isn't a big deal. If he was one of the other passengers, either a business traveler who couldn't be delayed, or someone traveling for family emergency like illness or funeral... then come back and tell us if they have no reason to be upset. I'm a frequent business traveler, and I can assure you that delays can cause huge real-world problems, like missed connection, missed business meetings, or missed appointments that cannot be rescheduled. Before you judge someone for being upset, go figure out why... His reviews are positive but started to become like Sam's - they are no longer reflective of the real world situations.

I am an actor and flew from Tampa, Florida to Honolulu last month for four days to work an episode of a TV series. We were late most every segment from Tampa to Houston to San Francisco to Honolulu. The flight from San Francisco to Honolulu was on a 737-800 where the wifi and entertainment system was inoperative. We arrived in Honolulu late and had to remain onboard to complete the ag forms because someone in SFO forgot to board them. I was a day late on the return flight because of crew delays. The return was Honolulu to Houston to Tampa. I got to experience the new Polaris first class on the 777 out of HNL to IAH. It was good. Lunch was good. Breakfast not so great. The ground personnel and flight attendants were wonderful and made the trip a lot easier. The only exception was a very rude agent in HNL. I still like United.

I experienced my second delay, this time on my summer 2023 vacation with my parents to DC, when we were scheduled to leave on our Delta flight at 1030pm from LAX. But the plane at our gate hadn’t left out yet due to waiting on a tug to push it out, which delayed our flight( at the time by 1 hour)which had already arrived and was waiting on that gate to open which had passengers on it waiting to deplane,plus to clean that aircraft for our flight to Detriot, which delayed us even more by another hour making it a 2 hour delay (which made us miss our connecting flight in Detriot). To make a long story short, we didnt leave LAX until 1:00am.Once we arrived in Detriot ,Delta rebooked us on a Tuesday morning flight to DC, which meant we had a day/overnight on Monday in Detriot, but we packed a lot of patience,and we understood. We even took a little tour around Detriot. We were confirmed on the next day flight to DC, but we truly enjoyed experiencing being in a New State and City we never thought we visit. I've gotten spoiled watching the videos of first class on airlines like Emirates , Air France, and other Asian and European airlines where flying First Class is a luxurious experience. Then we come to American companies like American, Delta, and United, and their First Class generally falls way short of the foreign carriers, often not even coming close to their Business Class service. The US airlines look like the bean counters had carte blanche control over interior decor. There was a time when airlines like Pan Am and TWA were known for their luxurious First Class experience, but those days appear long gone. I tilt my hat to you, Jeb, for being more diplomatic that I am. I worked for airlines back in the 80s and 90s and do give the flight crews great respect. Day after day, they manage to work the front lines and work hard with a smile on their face and concern for their passengers, even on those days where passengers are irate because of late departures, delays, and even cancelled flights. The airlines don't like to have those problems or delay flights as it costs them money and passenger good will, but it's better to delay a flight than to end up with passengers spread across the landscape.

I live in SE Louisiana and when I am able to fly up front going east my international departure airport is Atlanta or - even better - Houston/Dallas. The extra several hours long flight gives me time to actually sleep instead of taking a max four hour nap. I spent years flying on Delta between Atlanta & Dubai. It was (DL no longer flies to Dubai) a 15 to 16 hour non-stop flight and that allowed a leisurely dinner followed by nine hours of sleep, and a great breakfast before landing. Conversely, doing the same trip in economy was like being in an electric chair but without the electricity.

I consider myself as an American Airlines fanboy, but Robert Isom (CEO of AA) thinks that not having IFE in their airplanes is better because they think that all the passengers nowadays have their entertainment screens (Laptops, IPads, Cellphones, etc). But, in my opinion, Robert Isom is not correct; having IFE can be much better and more effective for American Airlines. The problem is that American Airlines is decreasing their level because they aren’t aware of their service, only about the airline's profits. Nowadays I still bet on AA, but I have to admit that AA is not the best airline at the moment.

All the higher ups at AA are making bank because of cost cutting measures and its patrons are on the losing end of the stick. Not a pretty picture for sure!

I partially disagree about delays being unavoidable... If it were weather, or even a maintenance delay I agree those may be excusable, but a crew issues are entirely avoidable if the airline properly staffs their published schedule. The airlines are overextending themselves right now... scheduling flights they can't staff and that's entirely the fault of airline management.

Jun 20, scheduled MCO/EWR/CPH. United/SAS. Two days before departure United cancelled our flight to EWR. We were rebooked on an earlier United flight which gave us 7 hours at EWR. No problem, we had access to the SAS lounge when it opened. Not the same level as a Polaris lounge but was adequate. Two days before our return the SAS pilots went on strike. We were rebooked on British Airways, CPH/LHR/MCO. All worked out well.

I have just had a flight to Cleveland from Newark that first get delayed as a result of our inbound aircraft getting diverted to Albany due to severe weather! Delayed by another 2 hours, and then another 20+ or so minutes down the line, the flight was then cancelled! Luckily I managed to rebook my flight online with no problem or extra charge, but no hotel vouchers were offered! There were no other later nonstop flights to CLE with available seating so I decided to overnight my stay and get in an airport hotel, and decided got an early morning nonstop flight. Perfect example of dealing with such an unfortunate event!

I had a terrible experience with Air Canada (flying from Lisbon-SFO) My flight in Lisbon was delayed 5 hours which made me miss my connection in Toronto. I was booked on a new flight the next morning. I tried 6 different hotels within the area and they were all fully booked because Toronto airport is really bad right now and thousands of passengers had cancelled or missed connections. I ended up spending the night on the airport floor with hundreds of others. When I finally made it to SFO (30 hours later) Air Canada had lost half our passengers bags. Never fly through Toronto or with Air Canada right now! They are extremely short staffed and most flights get canceled or heavily delayed

I'm a 1K with UA and for the most part their service is pretty good all things considered. But their rolling delays are a huge issue. Frequently, they will have a delayed inbound arrival and then set the boarding time on the new flight for five minutes after the arrival. We all know that won't happen. UA gets full credit for being honest about the cause of the delay, but wish they would be honest on the new departure time, rather than continuously pushing back the boarding time every 10-15 minutes.

This is no new issue at congested airports. I"ve been dealing with it for a least 20 years nows. You just get good at your own predictions and go do something else in the lounge etc. They really don't know the new departure time. Eventually is the honest answer by the staff. The best advice is to not stress about it. It's part of travel.

@@johniii8147 How right you are. I first started traveling for work 38 years ago and there have been a lot of changes in the travel industry during that time (mostly good changes). I have learned to deal with the frustrations of travel because there's really nothing else you can do about it. I plan for delays and cancellations since that is my normal and minimize the disruptions where I can. And I celebrate the odd travel day where things go like clockwork😁! Above all, I feel for the flight crews, gate agents, ground crews, and so on because they often bear the brunt of the unhappy traveler.

It's so that people don't look at it and say "oh, the plane is delayed for 2 hours" and then immediately run off to a lounge, because if it suddenly isn't delayed for 2 hours, then they're going to be late or even miss boarding if they're not paying attention.

Most of aviation industry is seriously understaffed. The demand level is increasing faster and sooner than expected. European carriers and airports are struggling too. Unless you really need to travel with a bigger checked baggage , I would recommend just flying with just the cabin baggage allowance.

At least you made it. We were going to Brittany and Normandy after a stop in Stuttgart to see family. Our incoming British Airways had a weather diversion to BOS. They lied to everyone in the BA lounge about whether the flight was going to be cancelled (literally from 8pm until midnight). At midnight they cancelled the trip and told everyone they had absolutely zero information on when - or whether - everyone would be rescheduled. We were told to wait for emails or texts. Long story short? BA couldn't get us to Stuttgart until 7 days later (this was an AA code share and AA emphatically said they could NOT use any other carrier than BA). At that rate, with the rental car reservation gone and the other hotel reservations toast, we cancelled the trip.

Oh yeah had a pretty epic Delay in DEN on June 11 that was a combination of ALL THREE common delay causes: 1) Weather (where the plane with our crew for our flight had to divert to Colorado Springs, fly down to Denver, divert A SECOND TIME and finally arrived 3.5 hours late. 2) Crew Shortage (where our plane was there but the crew flying it was on that weather delay). 3) Mechanical. When the plane finally arrived, we were switched to that equipment and that equipment had a flight computer that was not acknowledging the flight inputs. So... after getting to the Airport early at 4pm for a 7pm departure going back and forth between 2 terminals, our plane finally arriving at 11pm and then sitting on the plane parked until midnight listing to everyone around us whine like children, our captain came on the PA verbally sounding very upset and said words I've never heard before: "Folks this is your captain, my full name is _______ _______ and my employee number is _______, give me a good review or report me, I don't care! I've been flying for ___ years and this has been the most messed up day of my career, we've had to divert because of weather twice, we have NO IDEA what's wrong with the flight computer, we started our day at 1pm Eastern Time today and I don't even know if I'm legally allowed to fly for much longer." -- Well, with that my wife and I (who had been peaceful the entire time trying to calm other passengers down) looked at each other and without saying much of anything, got our bags and (to the stunned look of the complaining Karen across the seat from us) walked off the plane. Safety is my primary concern and this just sounded like a situation that was not going anywhere good. The gate agent was great but I believe it helped that we were very pleasant to her. She set us up with a hotel, transportation to and from and seats a direct flight bright and early the next morning. Rumor had it that the plane actually made it out of there that night but we both stand by our decision. We were able to make it out the next morning with little drama and bonus, a great view of the Rocky Mountain Range. Sadly the story doesn't end there. There were so many people hacking their lungs inside out in Denver that I ended up getting COVID from the experience as a final memento! I recovered just fine but I'm probably going to be that guy with an N95 the next time I have to roll through one of those cattle calls. I'm fine getting sick but it's not going to make my travels very fun. So there it is!

I couple weeks ago, I was taking a flight out of LGA, and after we got onto the plane we were on the ground for 4 HOURS before taking off. At first, we spent about 45 minutes taxiing to the gate, but some weather came into our flight path, meaning we would need to reroute, and we had to head back to the gate to get more fuel. After about an hour at the gate, we took another hour and a half to taxi before finally taking off.
