I rode the Agawa Canyon Tour Train in the 1970s. It is considered one of the most scenic trains in Canada, It is a round-trip excursion train that starts and ends in Sault Ste. Marie ON. It used to be part of a train that traveled from the Soo to Hearst ON. Unfortunately, that train has been discontinued. The tour train used to be available every day of the year. It is now limited to the months of September and October.

Alaska Railroad Coastal Classic *Honorable Mention Southwest Chief I have not ridden on the last two, hence their rankings, but just seeing them makes me want to go. The Southwest Chief is a beautiful trip. When I went, they had a Native American tribal leader from Albuquerque to Flagstaff give a tour of the landscape. Thanks for the video.

Pro tip, go west on California Zephyr, especially in the summer. Trains slow down when it's hot, and you might miss the Rockies with a delay. West bound, the train gets to Denver in the morning, meaning you'll get the full Rockies. You might miss the Sierra, but that's only if it's really late. However, sunrise on salt flat is really pretty, and sunset in Reno is beautiful.

I used to hop up from Portland to Seatle for a Baseball game (the baseball/ soccer/ football fields are all within walking distance from the station... getting home may be a problem though for night games so planning is a good thing) on the AmTrack, LOVED it! but on at least one ocassion a seat in my cabin was pee'd on and stunk to high heaven. ofc only time you need to be there is when boarding, but still that was the last time unfortunately. crossing one metal bridge there was a row boat with a grandpa and grandkid fishing below us, it was like a scene from a movie- I'll never forget that sight!

I have ridden on the Empire Builder and the California Zephyr too! My favorite is the Empire Builder and I even stopped and stayed overnight at Glacier National Park for a couple days too. I think you and Suzanne should experience historic steam train rides and there is a lot in the U.S. The most well known railroads in America are the Durango & Silverton in Colorado, Strasburg Railroad & East Broad Top Railroad in Pennsylvania, Cass Scenic Railroad in West Virginia, and so much more!

We rode the The Coast Starlight from Santa Barbara just to Portland, and it was wonderful.... except for we had a room with the hardest beds! Might as well have slept on the floor. The views were magnificent of course and we literally camped out in the observation car. On some scenic trains you can only stay for about 2 hours to let others have seats, but apparently not as many were interested on our trip as there were always empties and we were never asked to move.
