I remember my first session. I had done gym for 7 years. And a purple belt who was very polite told me to show me my gym strength. He casually was about to pop my arm out within 15 seconds. And I'd like to think I was fairly strong. I was benching 140kgs for a full set at 78kgs. Boy did I get thrown around like a ragdoll. His hand grip was insane. I couldn't believe how strong he was for someone slim. And of course I gassed out in about 40 seconds anyway. Then a gifted 15 year old built like a truck tapped me out 5 times in one round. Its shocking to understand how little to nothing the average person knows, but they think they know and think they can do something on the ground against a trained opponent. I was deluded, it opened my eyes. Over a year down the track. Still stripe one. But man I feel so good.

I’m a straight gym bro converting to bjj, deadlift is 600lbs, bench is 325 and squat is 405. I’m 6 ft 214 lbs, I remember walking into a bjj gym the first time I was nervously excited, I couldn’t wait to impress everyone with my raw strength(atleast that’s what I thought) I had dudes that were literally 70lbs under me wrapping me up like a snake. I was getting submitted 5+ times per roll. Holy shit that drive home was depressing. My ego was shattered, but I was also extremely amazed and enthralled. How could such average looking dudes just assassinate me like that???? I HAD to learn! been going for three months now and I’m finally making progress! It also helps that the most badass individuals in the gym are also the nicest and make great teachers. Awesome way to make friends.

I learn something every match, and I am pretty much untappable by any blue belts, and can survive purple belts sometimes. I have learned how to triangle and armbar very well, but mostly my defense has improved. I have been tapped so freaking much that I can now notice when i'm about to get submitted a certain way. The way my defense has been so good is because every time I get tapped, I asked how they tapped me and what is the counter. My offense is terrible, but I know how to hold side control very, very well. I also only know one single sweep. It's still very hard for me to face big people 300lb+ because you need great jiu jitsu to beat them and strength isnt as helpful, lol.

I was slightly bigger than most of my peers and had a decent technique, so for people at the same level as me I was kind of a challenge. Then my instructor asked me to spar with a blue belt, and she just destroyed me. I spent most of the time on the ground. I wasn't even able to try and counter her moves that I was down on the tatami again, and again, and again. Years later I discovered that she kept practicing judo (I didn't) and took part to several international competitions (probably also won a European one, but I'm not sure).

"the old timer" in my gym we have this white belt older guy in his 50s or so but hes a wrestling coach. When I tell you he has his way with me as a younger fit white belt at 26, HE HAS HIS WAY WITH ME. Its humbling when and older white belt teaches you things.

So, I'm the old timer... I got in BJJ couple of months ago and I love it, my daughters came in with me (14 and 5 y.o) we are all having fun. However last friday a big gym guy came to class and he had missed like 5 months classes, we got rolling and he couldn't pass my gaurd got desperate and used a lot of his strength and broke my rib... i'll be back in 3 to 4 weeks.

As "a patient" white belt this made me a little sad. However, as a true patient white belt. I wont give up. On my first day ever doing bjj I strained a intercostal muscle somehow. Being fragile sucks. I hope I get tougher.

Yep, I'm the cross between patient and old guy. Though the latter causes former. Years in Judo, torn knees, shoulders. I made my decision to move into BJJ because as the body started breaking down more often, and being nearly 50, even with some extra dad bod cushion you still never get used being thrown at 235lbs dozens of times per class. So I decided to start the easy injury free sport of BJJ! hahaha. Ironically my first week of BJJ, i decided to go back to my Judo dojo to check it out, and playing around reinjured a previously torn meniscus, once I got back to normal then covid hit, and in my state all the schools were forced closed, at this rate I'm probably going to be a white belt forever, haha, been able to sneak in rounds here and there on the down low to try and at least retain knowledge over the year. But I love it, its a great sport, I enjoy the chess match. And the BJJ ground work is light years beyond the Newaza we used to do. I've got a few crafty attacks that are above my basic white belt rank, but the guards and guard retention in BJJ is truly frustrating. Love your videos man, the narration is great and I get to learn a lot from it. Definitely a great learning resource and entertaining as well.

I'm getting back into BJJ. I did it for 2 months before I broke a few ribs in a car wreck and had to take a break. I was cleared to go back and i'm glad I took the break because I could evaluate the gym I was at and decided it wasn't for me, so Im trying out a new gym and I am super excited to get back at it

@@neonbelly9491 Heya! It's going great -- my studio currently runs classes 3 days a week, so I try to do three days a week for training, but 2 at the bare minimum. I had a bit of downtime in December due to Covid, but I got myself a nice Origin Gi for Christmas to make up for it (spoiler alert: expensive gi's don't help your Jiu-Jitsu, lol). They just expanded the location, and we're in the process of installing mats now, so we may be able to add some open mat times as well. I got my first stripe in November, and I'm currently working on my second. :) Still loving it!!

I hate to admit it, but I am the samurai. 😅 I’m 26 years old, 6’1” 225, very athletically gifted (natty), 1st stripe white belt, training for about 3 months now, and every time after rolling with someone I haven’t rolled with yet they ask if I wrestled in college (I never wrestled). No other white belts really tap me since I started (they used to my first two weeks), and I definitely have been beating up on a few blue belts as of late. I give some purples problems with my guard retention (spider/lasso seems to be my go to), but I’ve yet to submit any. You hit the nail on the head though man! I’m not a spaz white belt (and if you’re reading this and you’re a white belt you know who you are SLOW IT DOWN), and I definitely don’t try to brute my way through anything. I just try and stay competitive and train super hard. That being said, 26 is definitely late to be picking up a sport like this especially since I already have a career and a shit ton of other hobbies, but training 3-4 times a week 2 hours a sessions seems to do the trick alongside lifting weights whenever I can. Great video man 🤙🏻🤙🏻🤙🏻

I hope you see this comment. Thus far I am enjoying and learning from your videos. Kudos. 1 remark about this video, suggesting that LeBron is not a “nerdy” type or one who does not exactly put a lot of thought in his (or does not have too) craft is incorrect. Same as for other sportsmen or women, like say a C. Ronaldo, he puts a lot of time and thought in conditioning, nutrition etc. Next to this he allocates material time and effort towards studying the principles, techniques of his craft. He is considered a purest and student of his art/sport. He also seems to apply his nerdy traits to other elements of his life as evidenced by his varied interests and succes in other fields. Also one to look up too whether you are a fan of this particular sport/craft/art or not.
