Heads up, I replaced that seal on a replacement transmission and it still leaked. I removed the extension housing and removed the bushing and its oil grooves were completely worn out, causing more trans oil than normal to pass by.

@47639854 жыл бұрын
If you're going to yank the extension housing and replace the bushing (which is the real problem), it's a great excuse to go buy yourself the new 1/2" Ridgid battery-powered impact wrench. It made short work out of what otherwise would have been a tough job. Place a slightly smaller-diameter socket against old bushing and knock it out with a shop hammer. Freeze new bushing before installing. I placed a piece of oak over top so I wouldn't damage with hammer. I had to use socket to knock it in that last 1/8th inch. I used a same-size piece of PVC pipe to protect new seal in when I pecked it in with hammer. Use some gasket-maker to seal and reassemble. No more leak, and I saved myself a couple grand!

how nasty was to remove the housing ,do I need to drain the tranny fluid ? scale 1-10 how stuck was the bushing , did you have to hit real hard, Thanks
@47639853 жыл бұрын
@@felipevalles8041 I don't remember draining fluid. Everything was nasty because it had been spraying fluid all over undercarriage. Might hit it with powerwasher before starting. 4-5/10 on bushing. Big shop hammer against socket took it right out.
@fanofbama142 жыл бұрын
When you remove the extension housing, you are hitting the bushing outwards from inside the extension housing correct? Hitting it towards the driveshaft, not towards the transmission? I’m about to take on this job and I’m trying to have as much information as possible before starting. Thank you!
@47639852 жыл бұрын
@@fanofbama14 It's been two years ago so I'm not positive, but I believe I drove out the back, toward the driveshaft. There is a video on here of some kid punching one out with socket and shop hammer.

@@4763985 Ok I appreciate it! I have one more question. There were two seals available online for the extension housing. (The rubber seal that alone does not fix the problem) one has a small boot and one does not. Did yours have a boot? I ordered both just to be safe. The boot looks like it comes out about an inch onto the output shaft.
@dioscw6 жыл бұрын
Wrong seal for that application, always use rubber coated seals for aluminium parts. Most of the time the reason of that leak in 2WD XJ's is that the bushing behind the seal is worn out, if that is the case the new seal will leak shorty after replacement (ask me how I know that). Thanks for the video I wanted to see how deep the seal would have to go. Also you should mention that when you remove the driveshaft the transmission will no longer hold the truck, wheels must be blocked and parking brake engaged.

I am pretty sure I got it at AutoZone, Duralast Transmission Seal, I believe the part # I used was 710319. If I were you, I would be sure to get the seal specific to your situation, I am not sure if your vehicle has the same transmission as mine or not.

Go to any parts store and tell them you need a rear output shaft seal. And they'll probably ask your vehicle make and year if its 4x4 or 2wd and so on.

I have a small leak too, like shown in the video on my 01 Jeep Cherokee limited 2WD with an automatic Aisin 30-43LE transmission. I checked my official 2001 Jeep service manual from Chrysler and I don’t see anything related to a bushing for 2WD automatic transmissions, i did see on p. 21 - 97 Adaptor Housing Seal, the 2WD only mentions a seal no sign of bushing. Or if I’m not mistaken that bushing only applies to manual and/or 4x4 transmissions? Any help/ clarification would be of great help, thanks.

Can you provide the seal you used? I couldn't find the one that fits auto parts kept giving me the wrong one.
Does the new seal have to be in all the way? Or flush? Also. Next time. Block the rear tires. Put it in neutral that way you can turn the drive shaft to get it to line up the first time.
