Thanks for the insight 👍 I did this adjustment yesterday. Mine wouldn't engage 4hi all the way and would grind and pop our back into 2wd. Made adjustment and working perfectly every time! ✌🤛🏁

Thanks a lot. I was able to fix my 98 cherokee. Mechanics were charging 200-300 to fix this. New subscriber from Mexico!

i've had this problem since I installed the front double cardan driveshaft. at first I thought the u-joints needed replacement (which they did, the needle bearings inside the caps had long turned into red dust) but the problem still persisted. thanks to you I now know what to work on next. honestly, owning this Jeep and figuring out how stuff in it works and learning from people like you is more fun than I ever expected. thanks again mate

We find that especially with the age of the XJ, the body where the factory linkage mounts flexes way too much, and any off roading in 4L can pull the tcase into N and cause you to unexpectedly roll. Instead of the cable you mentioned in the comments, Id check out our linkage, solves all the issues of the factory setup, cost less than the cables, and is made in the US. Very thorough video!

Pretty simple. From my 1998 XJ Cherokee service manual. The NV242 and NV231 transfer case adjustment is the same. (1). Shift transfer case into 4L. (2).Raise vehicle. (3). Loosen lock bolt on adjusting trunnion. (4). Be sure linkage rod slides freely in trunnion. Clean rod and apply spray lube if necessary. (5). Verify that transfer case range lever is fully engaged in 4L. (6). Tighten adjusting trunnion lock bolt. (7). Lower Vehicle.******** The raise and lowering is great if you have a lift otherwise crawl under it.

Thank you for the comment/verification on the adjustment. I really appreciate the feed back! Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. Brian

Also If the jeep is lifted the linkage tends to bind and stay in four wheel drive. That's where the cable linkage comes in handy. One of the upgrades I plan on doing
@modestmeans35124 жыл бұрын
That's good to know, the cable upgrade looks like a great choice. I'm seriously considering that too. Thanks for the info. and please subscribe to our channel if you have time. Thanks again!

@@modestmeans3512all worked out well, I appreciate your help! I snapped the transfer case linkage when i tried to muscle the shifter and it was stuck in 4wd neutral. Manually cycled through 2wd, 4 hi and 4 lo and everything still good!

I have a 1999 jeep grand cherokee 4.0. With a selec trac Trans. I bought the vehicle in October. Checked thefour wheel drive out to see if it worked. It would not come out of four wheel drive. Until the third try. After this I noticed all four tires were a different size. I then bought four new all the same size tires. Went and tested the four wheel drive again. Dropped lever down into 4 full time going about 5 m.p.h. At this point jeep went about 20 feet. I heard a bang coming from front drivers side wheel area. Then I went to put lever back into 2 wheel drive. It would not go from 4 full time back into 2 wheel. And there is a clicking slash banging noise coming from front drivers side. As I slowly go forward. Can you help me?

I have a 99 Jeep XJ Sport. How it gets bound up is using part time 4WD on the road, even for just a little bit. The best way to unwind this is to put in Revers while in part time, and get onto something that will let your rear wheels spin in reverse. Being in Colorado we have sheets of ice in parking lots sometimes and this has worked the best I find an ice spot. But if you can find mudd, a yard of dirt that you can back your rear tires onto. Use your brakes to stay in position as if peeling out, while in reverse. less than 5 seconds.
