I recently replaced the power steering pump on my 84 CJ7. Spraying the bolts and nuts with Kroil penetrating oil and leaving it overnight before starting made life a whole lot easier.

Another thing that I’ve discovered is 50% transmission fluid 50% acetone makes an amazing penetrating oil. That and some heat from a propane torch. :)

Hey Cool Guy, thanks for the video! I had done this job on my rig, many years ago and was nervous about doing it all over again. Maybe more lazy than nervous. I am doing this with the rig in one whole piece vs taken apart like yours. 1) Switched to the, I think it is a 2013 Humvee steering box a couple of years ago. Being linked up and coils, my steering was the shits. This box helped due to to a better ratio and it bolted right up. I just went to different forums to find the correct year. The box is tough to find though! I went through a few places that said they could get it, but would then see a hold on my order. Rock Auto Parts or whatever it is called had the item!!! 2) I went to a local shop that was designed for the gear heads...more so than O'Reilly, AutoZone, Pep Boys, etc...These guys make brake lines, pressure fittings, etc...I had them make me 2 lines with the proper fittings covered in braided stainless Steel or whatever that stuff is. This takes the rigid bends from the stock pressure hose out of the equation. getting the right length is the key! Too long, the fittings will loosen with movement of the Jeep and too short, well you are screwed. I just took hoses off today and will dial in my pressure hose length. I will also NOT have the braided cover go all the way to the reservoir to help with removal ease. Hoses like to suck up on the fitting and the braided part makes it difficult to get off. The braided part is just to protect in specific areas that are not near the res. So, I will leave the braided material about 3 inches short of the res. 3) I have changed hoses, on the trail many times! It is hard to do w/o removing the box and if you have the old style clam shell bracket. Due to my modifications, I was able to cut a little bit of that crossmember plate to allow me access from behind my winch. In other words, don't need to remove the steering box, or loosen to replace hoses. 4) Lastly, I am a woman. Totally mechanically inclined. I know a lot of good men who won't try doing this job. Looking at it is scary for people who are not real mechanics...I am not a real mechanic. But, I have learned, watched and have actually done a lot of work on my rig, and this can be done by many who are willing to put themselves in an uncomfortable position. A position that they will be able to handle, if they try! 5) I did take my radiator and shroud out, to help clear the area. I also wanted to check my frame on the driver side of rig and this allows me better vision for inspection. Thanks for your video. I will remove the pump this weekend as I have a brand new PSI pump in the shop. I have pulled the pulley before and will just get it done correctly. The PSI is to add to my gearing improvements.

O'dear, my CJ7 has 7" lift total. Now I'm depressed. As I foresee my upcoming future adventures. LOL. Guess I'll just rebuild the hole kit and ka-boot-al. My only problem is that my gearbox is leaking. Where do I buy the two hoses ? I've done a little research but haven't located any yet....As for now I'm working on my wiring. {OIIIIO}

Wow! 7 inch. Did the PO have a Nepolean complex? :) The 2 hoses are available on rockauto or most off road parts companies (quadratec, morris 4x4). If you're really ambitious you can rebuild your steering gear. You could probably just do a seal kit and be good. I'm working on rebuilding one right now. Or you can reach out to Ray Moulton 401-330-6003. He's amazing and has everything for really good prices. Treat him well and he'll do the same for you.

Just replace that box with one from an H1 Hummer, it will bolt right in and have a better steering ratio
