Great video! I really like your style of teaching and showing what your doing the same time. The reason that I watched is because my buddy is having the exact same issue with their Cherokee, they have replaced the alternator twice and the battery is still dying after a few days. After the first replacement, they thought that they had replaced the alternator with the wrong type. After the second one failing, the shop is bewildered and probably has not done the diagnostic tests that you just performed. I can never say that this fix will be their same fix, but at least it will give us a few more ideas of what tests to run. If this video helps him fix the problem, I will make him donate to the channel!!!

Dark green wire vs. green with orange...which one did you connect the yellow lead to with the ground wire going to battery ground and ECM or does it matter? PWM was Green with orange and the other wire from ECM green.
@KITS_Auto_and_Truck_Repair Жыл бұрын
South Wind Sorry! i didn't understand your question!
@VashthStampeede Жыл бұрын
The dark green wire is the field control wire. The alternator sends voltage to the EVR in the PCM on this wire and the EVR pulses that voltage to ground in the PCM to control the output voltage to the battery. The green with orange stripe wire sends feedback to the PCM. Since voltage comes from the alternator and goes to the PCM to be grounded, unplugging at the alternator is not a good test for the circuit on the dark green wire. Therefore, PCM replacement at that point was a lucky guess. It could just as well have been a break in the dark green wire between the alternator and the PCM.

A better way to test the field circuit would be to momentarily ground the dark green wire at your test point and look for voltage increase at the B+ at the battery. If voltage increased, repeat the test as close to the PCM as possible. If the voltage increases again, it ensures the integrity of the dark green wire. If the connector pins and sockets are ok and the PCM grounds are good, then PCM replacement is the solution.

Just grounded the brown field wire / the one with no voltage and I did not get any increase at the battery. checked between red and brown field wires and got 8.89v and between red field wire and battery negative and got 8.9v. The battery reading is 12.5v Do we know if the voltage field from PCM should be 8.9v? and would this amount be enough?

The two I have from PCM red and brown, and the red give me 8.8v when the key is on position, brown is zero. but just spliced into brown and attached ground, while motor was on, I am tapping the ground to negative post on battery but no increase in voltage. And this alternator is brand new installed yesterday.

I think that the 8.9v you measured with a volt meter is the average DC voltage of the PWM signal. Note that the PWM signal rises and falls at various duty cycles.@@myviews469
