Super helpful video. Made doing my wife's '08 a quick easy process. I don't remember if it was mentioned in the video, but you will need a 36 mm deep socket to get the axle shaft nut off, I had to run back to the parts house to get one.

Thanks for the video, just FYI I didn't see a need to remove the sway bar link, also before I removed the lower strut bolt I was thinking the axle will fit between the wishbone on the strut and sure enough it slipped right through, I must say all the videos that are posted all show the need to remove the stabilizer bar link and lower strut bolt. My jeep is a 2013 grand Cherokee and it came right out and went right back in..

2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo with a 3.7l engine axle nut is supposed to be torqued to 100ft/lbs. Just in case anyone is wondering it took me over a half hour of searching to figure that out through an Official Jeep website!!

Well, we do that for the algorithm… when you make a mistake in a video that most people know is a mistake. People will comment on it which will push your video further. I’ve been working on cars for three decades I know better but I don’t really care. I’ll just fix it if it’s broken… and also it’s fine. Some people really get butt hurt about it.

Clay, this is another Clay lol every video I've seen about replacing a CV axle shows them doing it on a lift is it possible to replace it without a lift from the ground? I have a 2010 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo and it's the driver side? ...... love your videos.

having trouble with the bolt that holds the spring assembly to the lower control arm. Tips? I've tried jacking up the lower control arm to all kinds of different heights. I also tried compressing the spring. I also tried both simultaneously. I am trying to drive the bolt out with a hammer and punch, but I am getting nowhere fast.

Hey Jacob I’m not certain what you have going on but I recommend raising the vehicle up in a different position from where you have it lifted up right now you probably have it in a spot that is not allowing you to compress the spring properly I’m hoping that another jeep guy sees this comment and answers it because I’m not sure what direction to tell you to go shut up I often use ratchet straps to pull things together I don’t know if that’s helpful or not you do not put the ratchet strap on the spring you put it on the portions that need to be squeezed together

You did a great job, you explained the job well but as a mechanic myself, I was wondering how you were going to pop that shaft outta there with the other half still in the hub. But you did explain it but for the none mechanics, it would work to show them how it's reinstalled.

I will try to keep that in mind in the future sir. The problem is when you’re working on vehicles you know certain things and they come naturally but to other folks you are absolutely correct it’s not a natural thing for them so sometimes you need to be clear I am certainly trying to do a little bit better job with my explanations and visual aspects. It is extremely hard to find the balance between under explaining and over explaining and also under showing and over showing. The longer a video is the worse it is for the channel because people will only watch the points that they want to watch and that drives the channel CPM down I would like to say it’s a delicate balance but I’m never delicate with very many things.

Thanks for the guide and all the great tips! I'm going to be attempting this on my Jeep and planned to do both sides since I hear a clunky noise on the passenger side when turning (the CV boot appears to be starting to leak near the clamp also) and the driver side CV boot clamp opened up and all of the grease is gone. Should I expect anything different on the passenger side?

No the passenger side should be almost identical to the driver side. If they’re not both bad I don’t recommend replacing both of them because it’s not necessary. I don’t know why some of them go bad and why some of them don’t go bad but it is very rare to actually have to change both of them in the lifetime of the vehicle. At least that is my opinion.

@@sharpcarco would NOT recommend anyone doing this in their driveway. My axle is stuck inside the differential and it has to be taken apart now. Also, that lower control arm bolt is notorious for being seized and mine won't budge at all even after following this guide.

Push it this way. Pull it that way. Take the thing-a-ma-bob and pull it out. If the thingy is not out, push it the other way to jam it in there real good!

Question: how do you know you need front driver side axle? I have the same year make and model Jeep and only when I accelerate it makes a humming noise but only when I pressing on the gas... Any suggestions? Need your help. Thanks in advance

Hey Antonio more than likely that’s a bad Front or rear differential because you’re telling me that when you give it gas it Howells and when you don’t it goes away that’s usually a sign of the Front pinion bearing being bad on a differential.

Hey clay how do I diagnose if it’s a cv shaft? I have clicking but looking at the boots mine look fine. Everything else is brand new except the cv shaft and front diff. Any help Is appreciated. Also how would I diagnose bad front diff? Thank you very much!

Morning Kyle, Try looking into the driveshaft between the transfer case and the front differential that will cause that noise. One end of it is like a CV joint and they have a repair kit for it.

That was replaced a few months ago and is in good condition. It does sound pretty similar to that sound it was making though. I just put a whole new one on there instead of repairing it

Actually you hit the nail on the head about that front driveshaft. It broke today and left me stranded even though I just replaced it with a brand new one 4 months ago. Luckily it has a lifetime warranty. It looked completely fine though I thought forsure it was still good. I guess sometimes just drive em and they will diagnose themselves 🤣🤣🤣🤣

You couldn’t of don’t that a Harder way . The Clevis slides up the strut and out of the way and if you remove the wheel bearing the axles slide right out .

What if the axle nuts are gone due to rust? 2011 has wheel problems holding water in the axle area.

Well you still need to replace the axle and that’s not going to happen again for 7 to 12 years. So I wouldn’t worry too much about it that’s just my guess I don’t know all of the information but I’m assuming you’re working on a much older vehicle

Well the best way to be sure that you get the proper axle is called the dealership give them the last eight of your Vin and they will tell you exactly which axle you need and then you can order it from the local part store or order it from them. If you have an already called the local parts store you might want to just called him first because they can probably get the information from you that you need to make sure you get the correct axle

Well regretfully that is extremely common because the bolt rust inside there try and air hammer if you have that available and push it out but there is situations where you have to cut it and replace it that’s the last resort though

I’m confused are you saying to drive the screw driver in between the rotor and pads I’m pretty sure you’re going to indent and score the rotor if that’s done lol

No you don’t have to do it that way that’s just the way I do it. I look at it like this. The screwdriver contacts less than 1% of the rotor surface. A little scratch on the rotor is not going to hurt at least that’s my opinion. I only showed that technique because it’s what I’ve been doing on hundreds of cars for about two decades now. It saves me from having to get out special tools to push in the brake caliper cup and makes the job quicker and simpler. Do it anyway you like sir. But this is the reason that I do it the way I do it

You don’t have undo a single ball joint. The CV will shove out through enough to get it loose off the diff, then just take the bottom of the strut right off. Took me no time at all.

If the bolt holding the lower control arm to the bottom of the strut is seized you may have to buy the entire control arm. Metal seized to metal inside of a rubber bushing can be impossible to break loose. And no the CV axle cannot squeeze through between the forks of the strut.
