Jeep JL Wrangler Skid Plates EVO ProTek Engine Oil Pan and Transmission Protection HOW TO INSTALL

Anybody who knows me knows that I’m not really a fan of aftermarket skid plates. They're big, heavy, trap in a lot of heat, make it difficult to service the underside of your 2018 JL Wrangler and can make it hard to spot things like a leak. And, for the most part, the JL Wrangler already comes with skid plates to protect important things like your gas tank, transfer case and even your transmission through the use of a skid bar. However, there is one area that is completely exposed and could really benefit from some protection - the oil pan and transmission cooler lines.
While the oil pan is exposed, it is located close to the front axle and it's actually a lot harder to hit than most would think. So long as you pick good lines and/or use a spotter as needed, I've always found that you can get by without any protection for it. However, the transmission cooler lines are a totally different story. Over the years, I’ve seen where tree branches, roots and even rocks on the trail have been able to catch these lines and cause significant damage to them. Needless to say, it is for this reason that I decided to install some well needed protection for both and did so with an EVO ProTek Skidplate System (NOTE: this is for non hydraulic motor mount JL's ONLY). In this episode of the JL JOURNAL, you'll get to see how quick and easy they are to install and we hope you'll find it to be helpful.

As a new jeep guy at 37 yrs old and with very little mechanical experience I have to tell you that this channel is gold for me. I think I've watched your videos for the past 3 days while in the garage n going through things on my jeep. I can't thank you enough. I actually think I'm going to start a channel myself showing my jeep going from stock to where I want it some day. So people in my shoes who have never done anything more than oil changes n brakes can see it is possible to complete these upgrades yourself while saving a ton of money on labor. This is all thanks to you and your channel so I will be sure to always pay tribute to you and the wayalife channel. Thank you again

Only real problem I see with skid plates is probably same 16:53 as Vid OP... they weigh a heck of a lot, and a Jeep never has a huge surplus of power These guards at least are minimalist! The lack of directions though is sloppy and inexcusable. But pan and Trans lines and low point of exhaust is a good place to cover. One wonders how 3000 lbs slamming this 3/16 plate into a rock really stops anything though from destruction!!!

We installed the Engine and Exhaust loop skid plates after watching this great video. One thing that should be mentioned: If you are installing the engine skid on a JL 2-door it must be modified. We had to cut about one inch off the passenger side for it to clear the gas tank skid. I called EVO and they said they were aware of the problem. I would think they would give customers a heads up. All in all these skids offer great protection. Thanks for the video.

My 2 biggest pet peeves...no instructions (or crappy instructions) and missing hardware! Really nice job coaxing in that bolt with the C-clamp and finding hardware to finish the job. Also great to see a manufacturer send out a missing part or hardware ASAP. Great customer service goes along way!! Your rig just gets better and better.

Wanted to say thanks for the drive line video. I have an Adams drive shaft, the one recommended by them for the size lift on my JKU. I have vibration. I contacted them a year ago. They said it had to be my pinion angle. Keep in mind the angle is perfect, almost none. I the drive shaft to my local drive line shop. They advised me the Adams drive shaft was 1.5" too short and completely improperly balanced. There was only about 1-1.5" of spline connecting the two. Pretty crappy knowing they recommended a product that is completely too short and not even balanced right.

Wayalife YAAAASSSSS, all of them so far, I especially like your candid approach to unpacking, what is or isn’t there, and your relation to some products, which i see nothing wrong with. Seriously, i have recently done 4 bike builds and never took a pic or video, but i really like that you have put together good info for anyone looking for parts, mods or even a wrangler. Your visit to the dynatrac factory has to be my favorite, i don’t even own a Jeep (am in the market) but i find myself pricing mods, and thinking this is a real addiction. I thought motorcycles got addictive, i think the Rubicon is just a gateway drug to overland/crawling...

Excellent video as always and shout out to the camera woman and editor. I know Cindy has you but does she wrench as well? I'm sure she can in the sport of Off Roading as in life it may not be ideal to rely on someone else for everything. On the comment of sticks\branches\etc. under the trans lines. While greatly diminished it still looked like it could happen. A full skid would definitely take that out of the equation. As in life pluses and minuses in everything. I look forward to the new rail video since your LOD Rail video has me leaning that way I look forward to the next test to see if it turns out you change my mind. Thank you both for making these videos and the real world testing. Your channel is extremely valuable and I hope it never ends

Trap heat, I'm not total convinced of that. I'd say at a minimum, you need a skid plate to protect your oil pan (on top of the other ones). If that gets a hole, well, game over (it's a game changer, lol). I went with an aluminum one for my TJ.

@wayalife
@wayalife 5 жыл бұрын
Yes. IF you decide to run their exhaust loop skid which is really unnecessary, you can install it over the LOD mount. There will be a gap between the skid and the frame rail beyond but you could always drill a hole on the back end of the skid and on the frame rail and install a bolt there with washers in between. For whatever it's worth, I think I might remove my exhaust loop skid.

I searched the comments as I don't want to ask about things already answered, but didn't see this. How would this work, or would it work at all(?), with a Fumoto drain plug in the oil pan? I like the idea of the Fumoto, as I'd rather not have to carry a large drain pan in my motorhome bay. I could drain easily directly into a 1-gallon oil jug. But I can see this skid may well NOT protect the Fumoto with its longer length. Also it might be almost impossible to operate the drain valve. I really like the clean minimalist look of this skid. It does just what's needed and no more.

Actually, it's what I have installed and am using with this skid now.
@xtbro78
@xtbro78 4 жыл бұрын
@@wayalife Oh, thank you, that's a BIG help to know. I assume the lowest point of the Fumoto does not protrude beyond the plate? I've even thought I could grind the end of the Fumoto down a bit if it was close to try and keep it from hitting anything. Since I'd be draining straight downward into a gallon jug. The F-106 plug has no nipple at all, which seems OK and shorter. Do you know which model # plug you're running?

This has always been more for extra insurance and mainly to protect the cooler lines and so far, it's done that well.

Maybe those four bolts on the cross beam need bolt protectors like Rockhard makes. Do you like the oil drain valves like Stalhbus makes or that other company makes?
@wayalife
@wayalife 5 жыл бұрын
Nah, I've seen where they still get mashed up and make it near impossible to get a socket on the bolts. I was just trying to be funny with my comment about them getting beat up. I like have them exposed because it's a lot easier to file them down as needed.

I'd like to toughen up some of the components underneath my Jl to make her stronger for off-roading. Not much of a heavy rock crawler, more rough back roads with some water fjording. But of course I do get into some tougher stuff from time to time. Where would a good place to start be? Thanks for any suggestions. 😎👍🏻🇨🇦
@wayalife
@wayalife Жыл бұрын
Honestly, I would say a good place to start is to save your money and just get out there. Your Jeep already comes with all the armor you need to protect everything you'll most likely hit and from almost 30 years of experience, I can tell you that they'll do a great job. In fact, with the exception of this Jeep, NONE of my other Jeeps have ANY aftermarket skid plates and I am a heavy rock crawler.

@Wayalife thanks so much. Was thinking more along the lines of like ball joints, suspension components. I have the mopar lift at the moment but would love to learn and wrench some more. 😎👍🏻🇨🇦

I would still say to use your Jeep just as is. Your suspension components will work great and the ball joints will hold up just fine. As you use your Jeep, you'll start to figure out what modifications you'll want and really need. Here's a couple of videos of my stock 2-door. As in, running ALL factory components. kzbin.info/www/bejne/rIK7Z4l7h65olZI kzbin.info/www/bejne/nIW9moSBjc-FfdU

What was the decision based upon when compared to Metalcloak and Rockhard 4x4? My final reason for deciding on getting MC is the zinc coating and that the rear diff. skid has a lip that come out just past the diff cover, but RH4x4 can trap more mud and not as easy to clean out.
@wayalife

Truth be told, we're not even really big fans of aftermarket skid plates at all. Hell, I still run all factory skids on my older Jeeps. I don't like how the JL has it's transmission cooler lines so exposed and I have personally seen where tree roots or downed branches can catch on them and tear them out. That was the biggest decision to install anything at all. We've been working with EVO for a long time and thought we'd test what they have out.

If you had to do it again, would you mock up all the EVO parts on the bench and then bolt them on at once? Would that help the fiddling to line up all the bolt holes? Also, how have they held up over the last year? Thanks for the great video!
@wayalife
@wayalife 4 жыл бұрын
I don't think so. It's pretty heavy and it'd make it that much harder to install I think. We're running long arms now and so we no longer have the exhaust skid but the oil/trans pan is holding up well.

So i am in the market for a Rubicon. I have pretty much made up my mine on what i do and don't want in the JLU my only concern is how well the hard and soft tops hold up to large hail. is the hard going to crack and possibly have some go right through. will it just go through the soft top. Concerned because i have 3 kids, 5 and under and i don't want them getting annihilated by hail. we usually get one -2 really bad ones a year. Like southern Alberta usually ends up having hail damage sales at car and RV lots like once a year.
@wayalife

I've seen the hard tops take a beating from hail and hold up well. I might recommend you go that route.

We are looking to install a set of underbelly skids on our 19 JLUR V-6. My concern is that will trap a lot of heat. Have you ever seen this cause a problem? I have seen some people that heat wrap there exhaust piping. Do you think this is necessary? Thanks

It's a legit concern and for the most part, I haven't been a fan of aftermarket skid plates because of it. In fact, I still don't have any on my Gladiator. The only reason I installed this on my JL is because of the transmission cooler lines. They are very exposed and I have seen where a tree root had been able to catch them and do damage.

@@jamespeters3907 In a skid design like this, there's really no need. On some of the big skid system, wrapping the exhaust won't do much good. At least, not that I have seen or felt.
