As some of you may know, we developed a slight steering wobbled on our Jeep JL Wrangler and one that was especially noticeable when it was cold out. Mind you, this was far from being the dreaded "death wobble" but it was still something we wanted to address and for the most part, was able to mitigate it by installing a new front track bar. However, as we were going through all the possible problem spots to track down this wobble, we found that the tie-rod end on our drag link, right where it connects to the pitman arm, was in fact completely worn out. Needless to say, this was something we've been wanting to address for a while now and after talking to our good friends over at Synergy Manufacturing, they were kind enough to send us their heavy duty tie-rod, drag link and steering stabilizer relocation kit. In this episode of the JL JOURNAL, you'll get to see just how easy it is to install all three.
And, for those of you who are wondering, YES, this steering system tightened up things nicely. Also, because ALL moving parts wear out, I'm happy to note that replacement tie-rod ends only cost about $30. A HUGE SAVINGS over competitors who charge upwards of $200 per tie-rod end.

Just a tip. I recently, based on this video, purchased and installed a Synergy steering relocation kit just like you have. My tip is that if you are still running the factory tie rod you will need to mount the steering stabilizer the opposite way that you did in this video. If you do it the way you have it, with the can side mounted on the track bar stud, the stabilizer body will contact the tie rod when turned to passenger. Synergy ‘s latest instructions on the website reads that the rod side mounts to the track bar stud if you have a factory tie rod. Just a heads up to those who love your vids like me.

Crow's foot wrench allows you to use a torque wrench in confined space between pittman arm & frame. Be sure to allow for the extra length generated by the crow's foot in your torque setting: Ns = new setting Os = old setting Tw = torque wrench length Cf = crow's foot offset from Tw. Ns=Os(Tw/(Tw+Cf))

@@wayalifejust curious what the outcome of this install was? Seems like on JLU’S with aluminum steering box the stock drag link where’s out faster when 35 tires and lift kit is put on. My synergy sector shaft brace took care of 80% of my steering issues. I’m very curious if the drag link upgrade is actually worth it.

I'm so glad I found this video. I'm about to relocate my steering stabilizer, using the Synergy kit. I honestly would have missed the 1/2" hole requirement, and I probably would have locktit'd the small bolt. Man, so thankful!

Great clip and very informative. One recommendation I have is you should mark all the new nuts with a paint line so that if anything ever gets play or moves around and gets loose you can quickly just take a quick look the castle nut or fastener to see if they have moved. As always we enjoy the clips keep it up.

I was able to get a torque wrench on my drag link with a shallow socket. Nice vid. It cracked me up that you included the trip to Home Depot. I had to go harbor freight and auto zone to find a 21mm shallow socket, when I was installing my teraflex kit. I’m always missing something, no matter how big my tool collection grows.

I used to be in the Jeep world and enjoy your content. I do have one comment though. When torquing a fastener, use a slower arm movement as it ensures that the fastener is being torqued (moved) to spec, so that there is no jolting (fast arm speed) of the fastener hitting the torque set limit of the torque wrench and then backing off. Those thread adjustment fasteners on the Synergy products make alignment sooo much easier, the design started to be commonly used on the e9X BMW 3 Series. Another trick is to lube the threads of the drag link ends and tire rod ends with copper anti-seize, it will make future adjustments easier as nothing has corroded together.

After death wobble my Saginaw box was beat to f. I bent my stock tie rod on really grippy concrete wj with ram axles. So did the tie rod flip. Been through a 44a and 35 in the rear. They make a c shaped puller with a bolt in it. Works great. It slides over the top of pitman arm.

I scrolled down to see if anyone had mentioned it, looks like no one has. A 7/8 wrench SAE wrench will work quite well when in need of a 22mm. Ditto for 7/16 - 11mm, 3/4 - 19mm etc... Kudos on your content - you need to take more video of Cindy driving though ;) I'm currently enjoying my very new to me '99 XJ, already planning mods to make it more of a trail monster. I inherited it with 30s, 4.10s and ARBs front and rear. Looking to move to 33s and all that entails (cutting/flares/gearing). Doubt I'll ever see you on serious trails, but who knows.

17:52 Drag link pinch bolts. I have a HD synergy Drag link and the HD tie rod on my JKU however only have pinch bolt for the Pittman arm side of the DL. When i installed the origination was forward facing like yours however after driving the whole drag link will droop in downwards orientation. its pinch tight at the Pittman arm end and the knuckle end has a back nut.

Anti-seize is your friend!! Especially on the threads you'll be adjusting like for toe & drag-link.

The Synergy instructions specifically state that they come from the factory with antiseize on the threads but that you should apply more to them if you live in a state where corrosion is an issue. I live in Nevada.

something that I do if im unable to get a torque wrench on a fastener but i can on another is I will torque the one that i can and then use a wrench or socket and ratchet and see how much force it will take to tighten it more. that way when I tighten the one that I cant get to i have a very good idea of how tight to go.

I know this is an old video but blue lock tite on the smaller bolts would keep it in but able to be removed without stripping anything. It’s what most guys use on paintball markers on some pretty small screws.

My 2022 Jeep Gladiator with 20k miles has the "Death Wobble" on the freeway around 65-75 mph here in Nebraska (speed limit varies from 65 to 75). Experiencing that at 70mph makes you lose all confidence in the vehicle. Thankfully, my local dealer is replacing today the inner and out drag lines and steering dampener. We'll see if that fixes it. I like the truck, but fugme... can't have something I don't feel safe in.
