After hearing KD Lang perform that song [Hallelujah] at the Canadian Songwriter’s Hall of Fame in 2006 we [Leonard Cohen & I] looked at each other and said, “Well, I think we can lay that song to rest now! It’s really been done to its ultimate blissful state of perfection.” Anjani Thomas Anjani Thomas, Leonard Cohen’s backup singer and romantic partner, quoted in “Interrupting Yr Broadcast: Anjani Thomas” by Alan Pedder (Wears the Trousers Magazine: July 8, 2008). I am republishing selected posts from my former Leonard Cohen site, Cohencentric, here on AllanShowalter.com (these posts can be found at Leonard Cohen). As a Canadian girl, I grew up listening to Leonard Cohen’s original but this version just elevates the pure genius of Cohen’s song writing. Another beautiful version is by k.d. Cohen was meant to write the song but Jeff was meant to sing the song. Jeff's a vocal GOAT!! He only did one album in his short musical career called Grace and the album is pure FIRE! Sadly, just when he was about to enter production on his second album he passed after he walked into the Wolf River channel of the Mississippi River, a fully clothed Buckley waded into the water and began swimming. The wake of a passing boat sucked Buckley under, and he drowned. His body was recovered six days later, after it was seen by a riverboat passenger. He was just 30 years old. His father, Tim Buckley was a famous singer/songwriter in the 60's passed when he was just 28 years old from an OD. There were no alcohol or drugs involved with Jeff's passing. You can find KZbin videos of other famous musicians such as Jimmy Page giving Jeff high praise. For vocals, I like Mojo Pin, but for soul and depth, Lover You Should've Come Over. The song Grace for all around musical greatness! Enjoy and Godspeed on your musical journey! Actually when I wrote this comment I had forgotten that his producers and his mother released that 2nd album posthumously called Sketches for My Sweetheart the Drunk.

I completely agree about Grace. I will say that there are a few iconic songs in Sketches for My Sweetheart the Drunk (Everybody Here Wants You is a MOOD). But it always bothered me that they released it posthumously, because it was a work in progress and I don’t know that he would have wanted the world to hear it yet. His mom really pushed for it after he died though. He was a beautiful creature. I miss him so much. ❤️

@@aimee_susan I am fully ashamed to admit that I had completely forgotten about "Sketches"! It has been so long since I have fully dived into his music. I want to say I am too old but the truth is I cannot even think of a good excuse! Listening again now and it's like running into old friends, so thanks for this! And I fully agree on all counts. From what i remember he was waiting that evening for the band to return after sending them home so he could perfect the things he was unhappy with. I miss him, too. He was one of many artists that both my son and I loved and my son has passed also, as have many of the other artists. Elliot Smith and Freddie Mercury, to name a few.

I was born and raised not far from where he tragically died; this song always brings me to tears for more than one reason. We lost a legend before he even knew he had the potential to be a legend 😢 Edit: I'm really into conspiracy theories and the rabbit hole they take me down doing my own research into them; with that being said, as much as I love my home state, the law has been known to close cases quite quickly when they're high profile (for example the former quarterback Steve McNair from the TN Titans NFL "murder/suicide" (cough 'bullshit!) My point is, alot of people undestimate how strong the Tennesser river current is, esp. at night and the time of year it happened. He had a clean tox report according to the official records. I honestly believe it was an accident only because if the investigators really thought different, they would've most definitely ran with the narrative of his father's past drug use to quickly close the case; it would've been easier and would've made more sense if he was also found to be intoxicated at the time. That's the main reason I do believe it was just an actual horribly tragic accidental drowning 😔

So so so so so so so so glad you reacted to this version so glad you have listened to this song in your life 🤗🤗 Can you understand why everyone said to listen to this or Leonard Cohen's version? I cant listen to any other version of this song apart from this & the original. Was so disappointed that @jamel.aka.jamal didn't react to this version. People who love music shouldn't listen to other versions of this. I always imagine Jeff is singing this sat on the kitchen floor in the dark on his own after everything in his life has broken to pieces. " it's a cold & it's a broken hallelujah" I have to be mentally & emotionally prepared to listen to this song & will skip it on my playlist if I'm not. This song, and definitely this version, comes from some 'Other' place in my humble opinion. Thank you for listening to it 😊🤗

I feel like a new listener should experience the studio versions first. I'm not denying that his live sessions were/still are incredible and one is never like the other. But the first time should be album version, imo.

My favourite musician. ❤ Almost immediately after discovering him he tragically passed away. I've listened to Grace HUNDREDS of times and it still makes my heart ache. Absolutely beautiful musician that left far to soon but inspired so many other musicians.

Jeff Buckley's version of this is by far my favourite - it's so raw. There's a live version which is absolutely stunning too. If you listen to enough versions (especially the John Cale/Jeff Buckley versions vs Leonard Cohen) then you'll also find different verses come and go. Apparently there were lots originally written.

When you're checking out Leonard Cohen make sure you pick live versions. He puts such emotion into his live performances. Leonard is a truly amazing songwriter. Famous Blue Raincoat, Joan of Arc, Bird On A Wire, First We Take Manhattan, the list of his truly great songs goes on.

Wow, I've heard a lot of artists cover this song, many great versions even, but I've never heard one like this, this is phenomenal! I had not heard this before so thank you for posting, definitely my new favorite! I have always loved the song itself and he more than did it justice!

I literally just watched your reaction to Pentatonix's version. I said it was angelic and perfect, and was my second favorite version. This is my favorite version. Jeffs version is the one that everybody has copied. His version is mournful and broken. You can feel the surrender to love. It is personal to him, and he is not sure anybody is listening, he is just singing to the universe and hoping she hears. When you listen to Lenards original version it is very different and feels more like a guy singing in a bar at night. Lenards words have given so much to many people.

This is easily my favorite. The melancholy he gives it goes beyond heartbreak... the first night I found it was the first night I heard of him and the same night I learned he’d drowned, not sure how long before. It was like finding a treasure and losing it all at once. Drowning has always been a particularly scary death to me. Such a lonely way to go. So that has colored the song for me a bit and I love it when I hear it, but I don’t hear it often.

You hit the nail on the head, Jeff Buckley's ability to convey emotion through his voice is out of this world. Please, please, please, please do "Lover, You Should Have Come Over" by him. That song is just insanely raw and takes you on an emotional rollercoaster, in the best way. :)

This is my favorite version of this song. Jeff Buckley was one of the greatest artists of all time because all of his music is like this...you can literally FEEL his heart and soul coming through his voice and there is always an emotional reaction. There are not too many artists who can inspire that kind of personal human connection just by hearing him play. We were the same age and he was also dealing with crippling depression near the end and died in the same way his father did. I was dealing with the same thing at the time and his death honestly effected me more than any other stranger/celebrity ever had or has since. We lost an incredible talent in him and the world is poorer for it.
