Leonard Cohen said that he was born to write Hallelujah and Jeff Buckley was born to sing it.

Leonard Cohen was a prophet. Man knew more Old Testament by heart than some Popes

Jeff Buckley's version really hits me hard. It's beautiful and soulful. He was taken from this world far too young. I wonder what other beautiful music he would have created.

It's the mournful wail of a ghost. Maybe he knew it even as he was singing it?

It takes an incredible amount of vocal control to sing like that

I have heard it said that Leonard was meant to write the song, and Jeff was meant to sing it, and I do have to agree!!

You are correct about Ren. Ren has talked a bunch on how Buckley influenced him. Especially the way he plays with his phrasing and doing thing different everytime he performed. Very free with his singing.

How lucky are we that they got this performance on film. 😊 Look for the live version by KD Lang at the Juno Awards. She does it justice as well.

IMHO, his version is the best. When I was 16, my sister broke up with her boyfriend. He was so sad about it that he made me a cd to remember him by. This song was on it.

This song, this version, this performance is nothing short of gut wrenching. Life changing. If you can listen to this and are not profoundly, and forever moved…you have no soul. As for the lyrics, they cover every phase, every kind of love a human can experience. This song articulates the full breadth of human experience…at least the ones that matter. The highest highs, the lowest lows. The art, the performance, are dumbfounding.

One of the most gifted artists, the world has ever had, and barely anyone has ever heard of him. But then once they hear him, they don’t know how they ever live their life, not hearing him.

Jeff was one of the most special talents ever - I remember when we lost him. There’s still a huge hole in music where he should be. Please listen to Lover You Should’ve Come over…it’s breathtaking. You mentioned Ren - he’s spoken in interviews that Jeff is one of his favorite vocalists and a huge inspiration for him. Great reaction! ❤️

Rufus Wainwright's version of this does me more than the others. IDK why, but for me it's more haunting and desperate. You can watch either the live or non live lyric version here. I would recommend the non-live even though the live is also good. There is a very special person on my life that resonates with this one. non-live kzbin.info/www/bejne/roOTdX6FfMiildE live: kzbin.info/www/bejne/goKuZYycnrWdZ7M

Jeff honestly sounds a little bit tired here. I prefer his version over the original and any other version though. Such a beautiful soul gone too soon.

Absolutely no disrespect intended but you can't rank a performance like that. You just can't. That was just something different. That was a performance that was extremely heartfelt and it's just not, I'm not saying it's better. I'm not saying it's worse. It's just different. That is not something that can be compared to on a better than/worse than basis that was just different from what other people do with that song or with their performance. That was a drug addict sharing his feelings with the world. Other addicts related with what he was saying on various levels based on their own experiences. Non addicts, I'm sure also related to this performance as well for various reasons, also based on their personal experiences, although I'm sure it hit them in different ways.
