@@bustedrav I love Cohen as a writer and poet but never liked him as a singer. I definitely have some artists that I love for nostalgic reasons who, listening to now, I can agree they aren't great, haha! Cohen was a master at lyrics though! Wish you a wonderful day!

@@sarahanderson8635 absolutely, he is an inferior singer by any measure. But something can be said for the person who wrote the lyrics singing them and the organic emotion that comes with that. For that reason Jeff Buckleys version is my second favorite specifically because he was a master of conveying emotion through his vocals. You definitely can't go wrong with either version, or the KD Lang version for that matter.

I think Jeff Buckley took Leonard Cohen’s beautiful lyrics to the next level. Buckley was a better vocalist over all. “Grace” live was proof.

Absolute masterpeice. Just a man with a guitar pouring out his soul. I'm 66 years old and this performance brings a tear to my eye every time I hear it. Fair play to all the other covers of Leonard Cohen's beautiful song, but for me they all pale into insignificance next to this.

This is my favorite version of this song. The story is he did this in one take. I've had some struggles in life and have used this song as a kind of support. Such a deep meaning for me.

Everytime i hear this guys voice it's so unmistakable. The sky was the limit but, we had to let him go. But his memory echoes through eternity, when you pour your soul into something like this it's inevitable. Great reaction. 😇

I still hold Leonard Cohen's version as my personal favorite, but Jeff's version is a very close second. They are two sides of a coin. Cohen's is an old man, accepting that the life he has led has brought him to a point where he is ready to leave. Buckley's has always made me feel like it's coming from a young man who is crying out in search of a reason to stay on this plane of existance.

It was actually one of the cameramen who said "Wow" at the end of the song. Jeff replied "It was alright." (I was there when they filmed this at Bearsville Studio in Woodstock, NY.)

I've listened to this version for the first time something like 18-19 years ago thanks to my brother. I was a teenager (16-17...) back then and I can't even describe how it was discovering that voice. Jeff Buckley died in May 1997 when he vanished into the Mississippi River. I think nobody knows what really happened that day but we surely lost a great and inspiring artist. My favourite song by him is "Grace". Also, give a listen to his father's catalogue if you have the chance. Search for Tim Buckley. Cheers mate!

Je vous conseille une chanson d'Edith Piaf qu'il a également interprétée sur scène et sorti en EP : "Je n'en connais pas la fin". I like Jeff Buckley’s version very much. I’ve heard he was inspired by John Cale’s version of the Leonard Cohen song. Cohen wrote dozens of verses and performed different versions over the years. So often this song is misinterpreted. While this song is like a hymn, it’s not happy, or victorious. It’s about grief and loss and anger and resentment. If it’s about love, it’s about the toxic side of love. I’ve always wondered if Cohen’s use of the word Hallelujah is also a twist on the Québécois tradition of making profanities of sacred words. Many swear words in French Quebec, are words from the Catholic Church: tabernacle, chalice, baptism, sacrament, etc. Cohen was from Montreal. k.d. lang sang “Hallelujah” at Leonard Cohen’s induction into Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2006. And there, Cohen collaborator, Anaji Thomas said to Leonard “I think we can lay that song to rest now. It’s really been done to it’s ultimate blissful state of perfection”. - I agree. k.d. lang also sang it at Leonard Cohen’s memorial concert a year after his 2016 death. Very moving.

Jeff Buckley made his "debut" at a tribute concert for his father Tim Buckley who died young by suicide. Jeff drowned by jumping into the Mississipi river with his clothes and boots on.

@@itzel1735 Thank you. It really is tragic. The children of people who commit suicide are at astonishingly increased risk for suicide themselves. Perhaps it was an accident but in my view and accident-on-purpose.

I have to disagree with you: he definitely died too soon but was born just at the right time. He was a great guitarist that experimented so much with his voice, was not afraid to play with his falsetto and this inspired so many later generations of artists. Some may even say that Jeff was the precursor of alternative/indie rock. Matt Bellamy (Muse) or Thom Yorke (Radiohead) are greatly influenced by him. And there's a younger voice that recently starts to turn more and more heads that seems to be almost his re-incarnation: Conor Mason (Nothing But Thieves).
