How this song came to be is interesting. Jeff's estranged father was also a singer/musician and when he died Jeff played at his funeral. Leonard Cohen was one of the guests. They'd never met before but Cohen was astounded by Jeff's vocal abilities and guitar playing. Jeff asked Cohen if he could cover Hallelujah and Cohen said yes. Jeff went away and trawled through all the various versions of the song Cohen had performed over the years (not an easy feat before the Internet). Cohen often changed the lyrics, added new verses, took other parts out etc. This composition is a combination of various forms of the song Cohen performed. When Jeff was done he was allegedly very nervous about letting Cohen hear it, because the intent in this version is very sexual. He selected the right parts to change the meaning of it, to make the experience more about the "spiritual" passion between two people. Cohen obviously loved it. The religiosity of the Grace album is unfairly hijacked by certain people. Jeff wasn't a Christian preacher, despite some simpletons thinking the title of this song means they can abduct him as one of their own. If anything he was more a Buddhist than anything else. It seems he just appreciated the traditional sounds, enjoyed challenging his voice, and liked to put a new slant on what some people would consider "traditional" notions of faith.

lost an amazing crooner before he even got truly appreciated. The man plays and sings from a different plain that's not human.

I love Jeff Buckley. If you haven’t, you need to check out some of his other music especially if you’re a fan of guitar. He’s just phenomenal on the strings.

He does a good job. Leonard Cohen the writer of this song said it belongs to K.D.Lang. He heard her preformance and said it was hers. Again he does a beautiful jon

The best line in this song I’ll always say is ‘love is not a victory March. It’s a cold and it’s a broken hallelujah’ because that I feel is what describes love. Love is amazing but it’s so far from easy. It’s hard and trying and it takes everything you’ve got but it’s also everything.

He was a very talented individual. Anything that he would perform simply became magic. I think I’ve heard four different versions of this song and each one is as beautiful as the other. They’re all so individual and each one is as beautiful as the rest.

To all my friends and community of WNC, life will never be the same but we comeback stronger than ever. It will take patience and faith but your strength has been incredible. Your generosity to your neighbors has made us grateful beyond words. RIP Jeff Buckley. You were an amazing person on your journey to stardom when you died far too young. You are gone but not forgotten. ❤Tara da OG

this song breaks me whenever I hear it for personal reasons, but Jeff's is easily by far my favorite version, pentatonix is second.

I will always see this as the best version, but.... Pentatonix's version is also so insanely good. I see them as the best in two categories. Technically perfect goes to PTX. Gut wrenching, pull from the toenails your soul, and leave it all on the floor.

The best cover of this song. I still prefer the original but this version is so good that I’m not even mad if people say this one’s the best. Now, if you say that without listening to Leonard cohen’s version… then go do that and then your opinion will be valid. There’s no wrong answers other than “oh, I never heard the original actually”.

You should try k.d. lang’s version Leonard Cohen said after watching her sing it the song can be put to bed it’s been done to it’s ultimate blissful state of perfection the song is hers now any version is fabulous most people say the Opening Ceremony of the Vancouver Winter Olympics is the best ❤
