First aired: May 21, 2016.
Theater Talk presents a not-to-be-missed conversation with actor Jeff Daniels, now nominated for a Best Lead Actor in a Play TONY for his role in David Harrower's devastating drama "Blackbird," itself nominated for the TONY for Best Revival of a Play.
In an enlightening and often funny interview, Daniels talks about working with actress Michelle Williams and director Joe Mantello to create a fresh and unique performance of the powerful drama, 8 shows a week, every week until their limited run at the Belasco Theatre ends on June 11, 2016. Daniels looks back on his early days, "fresh out of a cornfield," as an intern at Marshall W. Mason's Circle Rep Theatre, as well as his discouraging first job on Broadway as an understudy in Albert Innaurato's "Gemini." Daniels also discusses his Purple Rose Theatre in Michigan, his Emmy-winning lead in Aaron Sorkin's TV series "The Newsroom" and why he followed that role up by doing the box-office smash "Dumb and Dumber To" with Jim Carrey.

I directed a guy once who couldn't learn his lines. We were ready to open, and I spent the day before getting a tech friend to hook him up with earphones, and I was going to stand in the wings and feed him his lines. Opening night, he all of a sudden knew his lines! I don't know how he did it.

Well Jeff, I with you right up till you said Cagney & Robinson. "Robinson" was the singularly most gifted, diverse & versatile actor ever to have graced stage or screen. Just watch "The whole town's talking", or, "The man with two faces" in BOTH films he played TWO characters, playing opposite himself. The man was unsurpassable. From his first breakthrough film, "Little Caesar" playing a gangster to his last, "Soylent Green" through "Dr Ehrlich's Magic Bullet" to "Song of Norway" or, indeed, any Edward G. Robinson film is just a treat to watch. Ps. I have known David Harrower for nearly fourteen years and consider myself to be his friend. I am on the periphery of film and Theatre. I build set and appear in tiny "extra" roles, I never want to be a star. Sending kindest regards from Glasgow :)
