@@Carnage7209 Ronn Lucas was a much more competent ventriloquist, popular at about the time Jeff Dunham started to get popular. If you can find his old special, it's a great example of what an actually good ventriloquist can do. Dunham is a very good entertainer, and at best a mediocre ventriloquist. Lucas was an excellent ventriloquist, but his humor wasn't stupid enough to be as appreciated as Dunham's. As usual, the smart money was on betting on the stupidity of the public.

Years later, I saw Jeff Dunham and couldn't believe he was still around and so was Peanut. Back in 80s, Peanut did the zoom over his head a lot and it was sort of a thing that everyone loved Peanut doing. He doesn't do that often now that I've seen, tho he did it a lot back in the day. When my daughter was a freshman at Marist College in Poughkeepsie, NY Jeff did a show as a part of Parent's Weekend. I asked my daughter if she wanted me to get tickets to the show, and she said: "No, I don't even know who that is." So, we didn't go. Fast forward to the year she graduated and was back home. We were watching Jeff's comedy special on TV, and she was busting a gut. I reminded her of the time she turned down a chance to see him in person during that Parent's Weekend, and she said: "That's who you wanted to go see?" I said yes, that was him. With regret, she said she wished she had known who he was back then.

Funny, I'd wager dollars to doughnuts that I grew up before you did, and I think late night TV (Colbert, especially, though others are great, too) is STILL entertaining. Perhaps, instead of waxing rhapsodic about your voluminous years gone by, you could just say that you really liked Johnny Carson, as did I. I cried like a f*cking 12 year old at an N'Sync concert when Johnny's last show aired, and he said that "I bid you a very heartfelt goodnight" line. It IS OK to be older, and NOT be critical of everything that isn't from your generation. I promise. You might not get as many thumbs up from other old farts, but you'll at least avoid appearing like someone who simply has no sense of humor.

Back in the 70s I went to church with Jeff. He was already a talented ventriloquist.by that time. He was driven to be the best and I always wondered how my parents would have reacted if I told them I was going into ventriloquism? We were traveling and our chore director Roger was standing on the tube in Paris. We had these while windbreakers and Rodger had folded his to look like a baby. As he bounced the white windbreaker it made realistic baby noises. It cooed, it got a bit cranky and it gently cried. Jeff was doing all this standing out of the way and throwing his voice. A number of matronly looking ladies had taken an interest and were trying to get a peak at the baby. Rodger looked at Jeff and said, "NOW." And at that moment he flicked the windbreaker open and three sets of panicked hands shot out to catch the now non-existent baby. They started to laugh when they knew they had been had. The whole car was laughing over it. Jeff deserves his success, no one worked at his craft like he did.

Dunham's act was very innovative for ventriloquism, esp at that time. Thanks to him, what seemed to be a bygone art form got a reprieve. This being his first appearance, to be invited to chat with Carson was an unwritten but highly sought after stamp of approval and would guarantee a huge boost in career _overnight._ His skill was virtuoso, clearly. And he did his own writing, which always took the odd-ball angle that others had not thought of, such that he could get away with edgy chatter because he could pin it on the dummy--which works. You should look for his Achmed the Dead Terrorist acts. He takes no prisoners and it's frikkin' hilarious. He went on to headline in Vegas and did very well for himself. We should all be so lucky.

Yeah, when Julio Iglesias came to Ceasars Atlantic City around this time, Jeff Dunham was opening for him there too. That's where I got to see him live. It just so happened that was right at a period in my life when I was going up to Atlantic City with parents about once a month and we kept getting invites for all the shows. I didn't know Dunham was going to be the opening act but I recognized him from seeing him previously on late night shows like Carson and on the fledgling Comedy Channel (which became Comedy Central). It was a delightful surprise to get to see him live! One time when I enjoyed the opening act way more than the main one.
