Jeff Passan and many other reporters do not understand finance and economics. The Dodgers are owned by a private equity firm that is not in it for the long run which is why they structured the deferred money. While they are operating within the rules of the sport, they will destroy the economics of the sport and eventually drive fans away like the Yankees with there selling the schedual to so many different media outlets that is frustrating fans who love the sport, but are getting priced out due to high priced ticket sales and subscriptions for multiple media outlets. A players strike might just be the final nail in the coffin from fans.

The problem with Soto’s contract is the length. Steve Cohen might be willing to lose money to win right now but if the Mets do not win in the next 3 or 4 years how willing is he going to be to keep losing money every season when they can’t win their division? I know he is rich but he didn’t get rich because he was willing to throw away hundreds of millions of dollars each year. Atlanta and Philadelphia are better than them. 5 years from now is he going to keep offering players 10 year deals with 4 or 5 hundred million?

Winning 88 games will likely get a team into the playoffs while the cost to go from 88 wins to 95 wins to 105 wins rises exponential. It appears that many teams, in particular in the AL, are satisfied with winning 88 and getting into the playoffs with a shot at going to the World Series and perhaps winning it. The team owners are shrewd businessmen and building an 88 win team appears to be an astute strategy. The Dodgers are the exception since they are building a brand in Japan which translates to a higher team valuation which more than paybacks the cost of their recent signings.

Super easy listening to Jeff Passan. I agree with Michael about the Royals... or many smaller market teams, that a timeline of dominance for 7 years or so would be unlikely. Baltimore is working on their crop and they are doing well. Oakland had a string of very competitive years... Heck even the Pirates were a potent team for a -few- years. Tampa Bay does their time like the others and after 3-4 years they sell the goods. If the Tigers wanted to win again... like really dominate... The Illich family would act like the father and go out and buy the right pieces to put the team in the postseason. Talk about the former Padres owner wanting to win before he passed... so did Mike Illich...

17:30 Michael Kay is actually schooling Jeff Passan. No, Buffalo could not support an MLB team, nor could Green Bay especially in the MLB revenue sharing system. Small market towns cannot support a baseball team. Big market cities can't even do it, (Oakland, Tampa, Miami, Pittsburgh, etc....) Passan needs to stop with the belief that a salary cap wouldn't help the MLB tremendously with SPENDING PARITY.
@teardropsclosedcaskets_nun17478 күн бұрын

@LadyJay1148 күн бұрын
@@teardropsclosedcaskets_nun1747 The financial structure of the NFL & MLB are not the same. The NFL makes a ton of money simply because teams play once a week.Also, the NFL teams share about 80% of all revenues equally between the 32 teams. This makes it possible for mid-market cities to have a team (like KC, Green Bay, Jacksonville). The problem with MLB is that teams like Cincinnati & KC are forced to compete with teams in NYC and LA. If you're old enough, smaller market teams in MLB were just as good, or better, than the big market teams. This happened because the TV revenues were equal for every team because all baseball games used to be on broadcast TV. The revenue gaps really started widening once all the games moved to cable TV.

The NBA is almost totally destroyed because of that cap. The NFL is worse than MLB as far as top heavy teams.
@PGO_Gaming8 күн бұрын
@@MrKeychange Nope. The NBA is destroyed because of the product. Emphasis on three-point shooting, and lack of competitive fire. The NBA is a PLAYER ISSUE. The NFL has the most parity regardless of who wins the Super Bowl. The Chiefs do not have the best team, but they have the best player and that player was DRAFTED BY THEM. Players can sign anywhere, and generally, they sign where there is cap room. They cannot all congregate on one team, unlike Major League Baseball. MLB is the only sport where this nonsense can occur.
@MrKeychange7 күн бұрын
@PGO_Gaming So the NBA game isn't impacted by players forcing their way on and off teams to play with their friends? Was it a better product with the rivalries we no longer have?
@MrKeychange7 күн бұрын
@PGO_Gaming Players go to the Dodgers because they're the "it" team, but there's no guarantee of them winning anything. Half the league could do the exact same thing and choose not to. A cap will bring salaries down, but the best players will want to play together.
