Shohei once said he was going to join Dodgers when he graduated Highschool but he ended up playing for Japanese professional baseball that resulted in increasing baseball fans in Japan…. His focus has been always passion rather than money. He has made so many choices over money for years and that is one of many reasons he is loved and respected so much by Japanese. Dodgers has been scouting him since 2012 and it was Shohei’s long term dream to join the team since he was little boy.

I follow MLB from here in UK, mainly on KZbin. I'm delighted the boy has gone along the street to join my favourite team and hope it won't take him much longer to get to the office. I'm even more relieved he hasn't joined another team that he'd almost certainly help to get to the playoffs. Show 'em the curve and knock the cover off the ball lad.

I read somewhere (not sure how accurate it is) that the going fair market value is about $8 million per WAR. So for those into stats, that's $70 million a season, which is about 8.75 WAR a season, 87.5 WAR for the next 10 years. Also remember that a large portion of his money is deferred, bringing the current present value down. Add to that his off the field value. The contract might be as crazy as it first sounds.

Then you must not know Ohtani well lol cus he LIVES FOR THE BRIGHT LIGHTS AND BIG MOMENTS. He's been doing it his whole life. How many times did he have to put the Angels on his back and it got him nowhere? Now he has the help from 2 future HOFs (Betts, Freeman) and the resources to be competitive every single season. A lot of that money in his contract is deferred to represent that. If the Dodgers address their imperative need for pitching which I guarantee they will, the post-season won't be an issue either as long as they can remain HEALTHY and they're just getting started with free agency. The arms are coming! WS bound. Book it 💙💪🏽

Maybe he will give up some money to let the Dodgers get another important player. Who needs $700 million? Not Ohtani. After his first pro contract, he gave the money to his mother and she put him on a couple thousand dollars a month budget, but he still did not spend it all. He didn't even have a drivers license back then because he was always at the facility working out and didn't need a car. He eats, sleep and breathes baseball.

The deferral is a complete work around the system that should and will have to be addressed next CBA. It's not fair to teams that don't have the same spending power as teams like the dodgers. The 70 million per year average should 100% be counted towards the luxury tax.

Im a dodger fan and i can say a few things with complete certainty. This signing is just as much about money as it is about baseball. Hes going to be worth hundreds of millions in revenue in advertising, tv, foreign merchandising/tv, etc. Also, he decided on the dodgers 2 years ago.

I KNOW TROUT AND JUDGE HAD SOME GOOD CONTRACTS BEFORE BUT THIS DUDE IS A UNICORN. EVERYTHING THAT HE BRINGS TO THE GAME WILL PAY THE CONTRACT EASILY!!

_"It's time for Dodger baseball!"_ And he's worth every single penny, too. He's the first two-way baseball player of worth since Babe Ruth. And since the National League has just recently adopted the DH, he can fill that spot when he's not pitching. He's also a great defensive player, but the Dodgers may want to keep him more as a DH, as lately he has been injured. So they'll probably want to make sure their investment is protected. And he doesn't even have to move out of his house. And the best part is, the Dodgers beat the Yankees _again!_ 😝
