My wife was on vacation in the US at the time and she attended the show. She felt so privileged to have witnessed Bob's full emmergence and was blown away at the performance. She was really surprised however that most of the audience left after Bob's performance ended.

Bob Marley and Lionel Richie are both Masterpieces/Masterclass of Singers/Songwriters/Perforners/Entertainers for all generations from 19howlong till this day in 2024! No one upstage no one! Black Man Unite! Stop Instigating False Narratives of Negativity and Competition that never existed! Lionel Richie has given countless interviews how the late Bob Marley influenced so much his music; especially the song: "All Night Long"! Stop the Bad-mindedness! Cha!

The late Robert Nestor Marley and Lionel Richie are both Treasures of Music/Entertainment and Men Amongst Other Men! Neither One Of Them upstage The Other! Their Music and Songs is for Everyone! If a white man falsely stated that Bob upstaged Lionel; all of you would have cried how the White man is tryimg to cause division Amongst Black Artists! The Truth Is A Dagger To The Heart Of A Liar! We as Black People must Stop/Cease & Desist in being The Race Of People Who Hate Each Other The Most!

Both are great artists. Playing two different types of music. I don’t see the upstage or anything like that between these two. They should never be compared. That’s like preparing country music to rap. Two different different types of music. Both are good.

Marley and the Wailers and the Commodores played in Trinidad a week apart in December 1979. I was 15 at the time and think my parents would not let me go to both (and in 1979 Rasta was still being persecuted by Caribbean politicians and police plus I probably wanted to go with a girl) so I played it safe and asked for the Commodores. I regret that.

Let's keep it real though......The majority of the audience were probably Caribbean people if this number isn't exaggerated. If this concert took place in any other city other than NY, that would not have happened. There was a hunger by the Tri-state Caribbean community to see him perform in such a venue and they responded in numbers.

Black Americans never accepted reggae and that was the main problem, thanks to the American whites who has and have supported reggae music throughout the years

Didn't happen! I was there BOTH nights at Madison Square Garden. Kurtis Blow was also on the bill! They keep telling this story and it's just not true.

How did it go?
@nivak1110 ай бұрын
Kurtis Blow came out first. Rap was really just starting to take off then so those of us who were teenagers were happy when he was on. A lot of Rastas were in MSG and Bob Marley had his first hit on Black American radio with "Could You Be Love". I grew up in Harlem so I was used to seeing Rastas and knew some of Bob's music-So NYC is culturally diverse so of course folks jammed out to Bob. But eventually-the Commodores were the headliners. A NYC radio DJ (legend) Frankie Crocker spoke with the Commodores and asked if they would let Bob perform because he wasn't originally on the bill-and they said "YES"-but the Commodores are LOVED in NYC and they had a great show and everyone enjoyed and rocked out to all 3 performers-BOTH nights.

@@nivak11 I heard this story many times too and wondered if the numbers were exaggerated. On a side note: I heard stories about the Rastas in Harlem on 145th St. and Bradhurst....but were there any Reggae Clubs and Dance Halls in Harlem in the 70s and 80s like Brooklyn's Biltmore Ballroom and Love People One. The Bronx had a few like the Stardust Ballroom also. But what about Harlem?
