Like many others have said, if you've stanned SMTOWN artists for a while now, you'd know that Next Level is not weird; in fact, it's the SM Standard. Think Super Junior's House Party, SHINee's Sherlock (Clue + Note) and Don't Call Me, Girls Generation's I Got A Boy, f(x)'s Red Light, EXO's Wolf and Tempo, Red Velvet's Zimzalabim, NCT's Punch, Hot Sauce, Turn Back Time, and Resonance, SuperM's One (Monster and Infinity). Practically every SM group experiments with song structure like this, that Next Level almost seems tame by comparison to everything SM's done before. When æspa debuted, I knew they'd have this type of concept from the get-go, and even felt Black Mamba was "too safe" of a debut for SM's next-generation girl group. I'm actually quite glad æspa's decided to go in this direction, and I'm excited for what their discography will shape up to be!

This song has the same vibes as I Got a Boy (SNSD), Red Light (Fx) and Zimzalabim (Red Velvet) known as the "Bohemian Rhapsody of KPop", apparently SM liked that formula (mixing many different sounds/rhytms in the same song, just like Queen did with Bohemian Rhapsody). Personally, I consider this as something quite daring for SM to make their artists sing this type of songs, and obviously, their artists are quite versatile, for the simple fact that no matter how weird/messy the song is, it ends up working and being liked. Some of the SM songs using this formula: -I Got a Boy (SNSD) -Red Light (Fx) -NU Abo (Fx) -Zimzalabim (Red Velvet) -Simon Says (NCT 127) -Punch (NCT 127) -Make a Wish (NCT U) -Kick Back (WayV) -House Party (Super Junior) -Why So Serious (SHINee) -Sherlock (SHINee) -One (Super M) -100 (Super M) -Tempo (EXO) In case that you doesn't know this songs, I highly recommends to you to listen and react.

SM IS DEFINITELY ON THE NEXT LEVEL. In this era where a lot of groups released songs and keeps on releasing songs in retro/ retro pop genre , SM groups keeps being on another level. We have Shinee with Dont ☎️ me and Atlantis, Red Velvet I&S with monster, Wendy with Like Water, Kai with Mmh , Baekyun with Bambi, NCT Dream with Hot Sauce. THEY JUST DON’T FOLLOW THE TREND BECAUSE THEY MAKE THEIR OWN.

As an SM stan since 2013 this song is so SM. 🤣🤣🤣 loved it on the first listen, and I still love it. But their vocals though, so clear 🥺🥺🥺 æspa really said vocals, dance, rap and visuals

it’s called SMP genre, stands for SM Performance. it’s like sm’s trademark style that screams sm to those who’s familiar with it.

3:50 you didn't notice that you and Karina said "BLACK MAMBA" at the same time 🤣 Songs in a Song is a trademark of SM. House Party of Super Junior, I got a Boy of SNSD, Red Light of F(x) and Zimzalabim of Red Velvet are the examples of it 😅

Your opinion is so valid! Personally, I agree that it does sound like multiple songs, and I think it’s intentional. The lyrics reference their concept and imply that they are hopping between worlds, so I think to reflect that, the song has intense shifts. For example, at the point where Karina calls for the “Beat drop” she also calls for “naevis” (the person in charge of opening the portals to the worlds in aespa’s concept) and the song kind of turns into an R&B track with more of an old school rap style, which has a diff flow from the “next level” chorus and the vocals in the rest of the song. The song returns to “normal” after they mention the portals again and have a last chorus(?). It gives me some Resonance vibes in that sense since “Resonance” is an amalgamation of the title tracks and “raise the roof”, and they each have their own separate worlds and members. I also do agree with the comments saying it sounds like the classic SM song. I think they are generally known for being experimental with music. It is cool that SM is incorporating their experimental music with their concepts now! (Specifically Resonance and now Next Level).

if you pay attention you can notice that when the beat changes they go to the world with their avatars, and when the beat change again to the 1st one they are no more with them.

i feel like this song resonate more to korean audience who grew up listening to SM's kind of song.. many of them get reminded of SM's past song and actually like the song... and it is doing really well now in south korea..

At the beat drop part where they say naevis calling, that's actually in the virtual world that's why the rhythm, melody seems like another song and the virtual version of them is like replying to the real version, and naevis is a helper because the virtual version and the real version connection got cut off by a virus called black mamba (in Giselle's and karina rap part ''we against the villian, what's the name, Black mamba'') If you guys read the lyrics and watch the 10 mins movie video that they released before the mv, you'll understand the situation

I think there isnt a climax since the song is mostly preparation/ transition to go fight the black mamba. Its mainly lore and stuff

So I decided to watch Hobs and Shaw movie again which was released back in 2019...and then the demo for Next level played and I was singing along till I realized It sounded the same as AESPA'S second comeback song!!

i like to think that the drop is for the AE to sing cause of how different the vibe is and how they appear during that part. so yeah.

I totally feel you on the mash up thought. But it's cool I think. I've never heard the original next level and I had no idea it was a remake until I watched your video. Aespa's concept is they have a real version of themselves and a digital version of themselves ( ae's/Navis/avatars). So when the song changes and it shows one of the girls avatars that's supposed to represent the switch of them going into the digital world. When I first heard it I only liked the next level chorus parts and how the song started. But now I'm addicted to it and I love the whole thing lol.

If there's something I've learned from watching music producers reacting to these things is that when the songs are around 4 minutes long, they tend to start with the chorus :D Honestly, the only added thing is the whole minute from the beatdrop to back to the chorus.

the reason why it sounds like a completely different song is because it is. when it cuts to nævis, they enter KWANGYA, so it makes sense that the song would change since they're not in the Real World anymore
