It’s so sad that the killers are celebrated and given so much attention, and the families are constantly traumatised and the victims aren’t remembered. It’s so dangerous too.

I think if someone i knew died because of a killer, i would be even more angry if any of these serial killer documentaries tried to focus on them and give them attention. Like they're making them famous for the worst thing that ever happened to them. I wouldn't want complete strangers talking about me and knowing me as "that poor person who got raped and murdered by a freak" and have them knowing all the details of my worst moments. This is why i hate most true crime in general.

“Jeffrey Dahmer” and “thirst traps” are two terms I do not want to hear in the same sentence. Honestly the fact that the show was made period is just insulting. I haven't seen the series and never will, the whole "let's make a movie from the point of view of the killer/rapist :D" trope has never appealed to me, and I always feel they minimize the victims, as if they were just an Inconvenient for the "protagonist". Like you said, disgusting.

Also turns out one of my other neighbors knew the landlord of the apartment he lived in and on time met him because he was sent to give him an eviction notice. This is all too real a thing that people should not be 'simping' over it's just sick. The way people have been reacting to this new series is exactly the reason why shit like this shouldn't be made in the first place. Yes, it's important to keep the public aware of atrocities like these but how many more times do we need to see serial killers Ted Bundy and Jeffrey Dahmer on the screen again, especially since the victims and their families have long been forgotten in these "adaptations". I used to be someone who enjoyed consuming true crime content, for the informative aspect, but the exploitation is gross. I support it if those related to the victim have approved it because it's an efficient way to get exposure, especially for those forgotten by society [MMIW for example]. A lot of the time, though, that's not the case and instead, they give these killers the attention they always craved and it's treated more like a story than a real-life event. Like I've seen people on Tik Tok brag about how they didn't flinch at the gore/that it needed more, people lack empathy so much it's insane.

I totally agree. It’s nkt about “awareness” anymore it’s just people’s idea of entertainment based on shock factor. Like with Jeffery everyone’s like “oh he was misunderstood and blah blah blah” and i almost fell into this mindset, but I heard about the actual victims and their families and I think that’s what’s important. Yeah, Jeffery dahmer probably has mental health issues but making a show about him isn’t helping anyone. They need to make something for the victims. A show or something that allows them to tell their family members stories or how they were let down and discriminated by police.

Preach. Being in love with a fictional villain is an entirely different ballgame, because no one was actually harmed; it's just a fake character. I feel like true crime documentaries can be very interesting for the educational edge to them, but when true crime events are turned into "docudramas" like the Dahmer show and certain elements are played up for dramatic effect, then it goes south. True crime docudramas often become so exploitative of the victim's families for the sake of shock value and views, and this is a perfect example of it.

While watching the Dahmer series on Netflix I was conflicted. Evan Peters is so attractive but the things Dahmer did were so horrible. I think these young girls are confusing the feelings they get when they see Evan and thinking they are in love with Dahmer. Idk. I live in Wisconsin and now everyone is saying this is our way of getting on the map. I do not want the state I live in to be known just for a horrible murderer. My mom grew up with and knew the family of that 14 year old boy. My aunts friend lived next door to him and he talked to her. It's fucking crazy. Dahmer was a sick man that went unnoticed for too long.

I think (some) people may be conflating their attraction to Peters with Dahmer because, let's be honest, there is nothing remarkable about Dahmer looks wise. There are people claiming this Dahmer Renaissance is putting Wisconsin on the map? Are they not aware of Making a Murderer? The Netflix Documentary that helped kickstart the True Crime category into a billion-dollar industry? We’ve always been a culture that loves True Crime, but there’s been an absolute explosion in TC media in the last decade. It seems almost inevitable, though, like it’s just expanding at the same rate as new entertainment media platforms. We’re just as weird and sick a society as ever, but we have more ways to show it.

I don't really get that people. Yes, if I watch the actor's photos, I can say he's hot and all. During the serie though, I never, ever, once felt attraction, because even in the most "thirsty" scenes, there was something behind, being the story or something phisical or happening in the vicinity, that made me want to throw up. And I say this in the most positive way for such a show, because that's the reaction a serial killer should give, expecially one like him. I'm really worried about whoever just found him or what he did attractive, because honestly I can confidently say itìs not the showrunners fault here

The feeling that there was something so monstrously wrong with Dahmer that he felt the compulsion to snuff people out and rob them of the rest of their lives. I felt stirred to tears at the scenes where the victim’s families spoke. I can’t imagine why people are attracted to Dahmer.

You're right, the vast majority of them weren't even born when Dahmer died. They're confusing the actor with the real person. They didn't cry when Dahmer died, they cried or felt sad when they saw Evan Peters getting "killed" onscreen. A lot of this whole thing is just Evan fangirls getting extremely confused about their feelings/attraction to Evan and conflating it with Dahmer. Murphy knew exactly what he was doing when he made this series, no matter what lip service he spews. Just look at all the scenes of Evan Peters showing his ass or taking off his shirt and glistening with sweat...yeah it's all catering to the thirsty Evan fangirls, the vast majority of whom are teen girls/early 20s women.

I believe that my mother might have psychopathy or something with similar symptoms. She tortured animals to death when she was a child. They are fond memories for her and shared them with me when I was young. She casually abused patients under her care when she was nursing student. She found it funny that an elderly man who she shaving was bleeding. She impaled a man through through the chest when she was younger and it doesn't bother her. Her favorite anecdotes to share for entertainment, are of the ugliest things that a person can do to another person or animal. I was sexually assaulted a lot while I was growing up. My older sister sexually assaulted me when I was six years old. I told my mother about it as soon as I was able to get away from my sister. When I told my mother what had just happened, she laughed and went back to her cooking. That's when I realized that my sister could do anything that she wanted to me and no one would stop her. When I brought it up, years later, she said that she didn't know that it would bother me. She enjoys hurting people, but she has a limited understanding of what actions will hurt people. Also, I was in the care of a stranger who I didn't know, when I was very little. The way that he handled me, felt a lot like a serial killer. When he was hurting me, it was with the same level dis passion of a person using a foot stool for pleasure. When I seek knowledge of why serial killers kill people the way that they, I am trying to understand what happened to me in the hands of that man and I am trying to understand my mother better. For most of the people who thirsting for serial killers....if they were ever handled by a psychopathic predator, is not glamorous. It is creepy and terrifying. I had a husband who had similar flaws and would have casually killed me under particular circumstances and he would have seen it as a way to express his deep devotion to me. Packing my bags to go to a domestic violence shelter, hoping that he wouldn't come home early, was the most terrifying memory from my adult life. He would have made it quick and kill me lovingly due to deep love and devotion and I would not have had a say in the matter. Being given a quick painless death by my loving husband, is so absolutely terrifying to me that it feels like I can't breathe. There is no romance in being killed and despise being in the presence people like that

The issue with that is that she would have to be diagnosed or had symptoms of conduct disorder when she was a child/teen and dealt with abuse when she was a child, neither of which seem to be clear from your comment. There is many disorders and mental health issues that can describe the way your mother is acting other than psychopathy. My best reccomendation is to get her to therapy and have a professional diagnose her rather than arm-chair diagnosing her with a heavily stigmatized disorder.

I think that this is because of Evan Peters already huge fanbase of people who were attracted to him being a fictional murderer in American Horror Stories. They allowed themselves to fall in love with that fictional murderer so they are allowing themselves to be in love with this real person who ruined real lives. And to make it worse the families of the people affected by this guy are ALIVE AND WELL. The evolution of the internet and how we have stopped seeing people on the internet as real people, makes it easier to separate the face of Dahmer from his crimes. Like when people glorify and adore school shooters. Obviously there's way more psychological reasons behind being attracted to bad people (like savior complexes and such) but idk I think people forget that the victims in these dramatizations were real.

In my opinion, people like this who fantasize about murderers have a similar problem to people who romanticize mental illness. They're not exactly the same, mind you - but you can be interested in criminal cases without glorifying them, just like you can be interested in learning about neurosis and psychosis without glorifying those conditions, yet the opposite runs rampant. Either way, it's wild that we keep running into this problem where people forget about the victims and go too far with their interests (- which very quickly spiral into extremely concerning and dangerous fascinations.) If Netflix cared about telling the stories of Dahmer's victims, there are certainly respectful ways to go about it. Capitalizing on the narrative of the tragedy rather than educating people about the events that took place and their effects is obviously not the way to go. Great video, Jake - your charming snippets of humor combined with your serious commentary is a great mix. It definitely allows you to cover difficult topics like this in a respectful, sympathetic manner while keeping your audience engaged. Love your content as always!

Sometimes I think the whole thing about "I don't want to mention the victim for respect for the families" actually backfires because then the serial killer becomes "the person" and the victims just a number, or a grotesque detail on a case. I'm not saying we should expose the families to trauma over and over again, but I do think maybe we should start naming the victims, and make the serial killers just nameless criminals, study cases at best.

I think there’s something to be said about the fascination with serial killers. There’s a fine line between information and romanticism. A lot of these people are teenagers who have underlying issues that seriously need to be addressed. It kinda blurs together with the idea of isolation and feeling like an outsider, though obviously these aren’t synonymous with… cannibalism.

Unpopular opinion, but I don't think true crime entertainment media should exist. People use the reasoning that it brings awareness to crimes happening but that's bullshit, it's for entertainment purposes at the expense of victims and their families.

True crime documentaries are one thing; I think it's good to spread the word, but when people turn it into full on acted out scenes, or continue making content when the family of the victims explicitly ask not to, then that becomes an issue. It's not a movie, it's real life crime. RECENT CRIMES, on top of that. If you want some reenactments about horrific killers do one abt,,, idk fuckin Holmes or something
@Hip.Username
@Hip.Username 2 жыл бұрын
@@shelbythisisaresidentialar5397 the vast majority of families hate that the details of their loved ones' murder is explicitly described, there's no reason to do it in the first place, and to put the burden on the family to have to ask for content to be taken down is awful. We have trigger warnings for surviving victims of crime with trauma but no one cares about these victims' families because it's an interesting story. Unless it's to catch a criminal we shouldn't be using the murders of people to make content. I know a lot of people are into it, but it seems like something that is long overdue to be changed

Tbh Evan Peters kinda deserves to be roped in with it. He accepted the role and decided to stick with it even when the families out the victims said that they didn't want this show to be produced. Also the producers of the show KNEW what they were doing when they cast a conventionally attractive man to be a cold blooded killer.This show should've NEVER been made.

My theory as to why straight girls thirst for him is that he was a good looking guy who pursued his “interests” in such a powerful, commanding, and straightforward manner (which are very masculine traits). Also him being homosexual makes him like “forbidden fruit” and “hard to get”: which goes with the principle of that intense desire for something that subconsciously is know that one realistically cannot have. And that’s what they find super attractive.

My bsfs and I had a conversation about this when the documentary came out. We discussed how similar the victims and their families looked in it. We were talking about how traumatic it must be to see that all over the internet. Imagine seeing a family members death. How the literal serial killer was treating someone you loved. I would hate the world Fr.

When the series came out, one of my co-worker started to Idolize him. He would come to work and try to convince everyone that Dahmer did nothing wrong and even tried to say that everything he did was just an accident. There were also points in time when it felt like my co-worker wanted to be Dahmer or at least do some of the things that Dahmer had done.

I believe those people thirsting over Dhamer are actually appealed to Evan's appearance and are confusing that with "bEiNg iN lOve wItH a MasS muRDeREr" I so hope this is the case, I don't want to believe they're thirsting for the actual Dhamer, the atrocities he has commited are things I wouldn't think any human being would be capable of. Then again, he is everything but human, he is a monster.
