Yesterday, I watched Jeffs Astrobot video and fully agree with the idea of Sony going back to what made it special and unique. The PS5 Pro is an example of what I think is wrong with Sony. Not that an improved console is bad, it's just that the push to expensive hardware is the push to expensive software and with that; long and expensive development will be priority over just making cool games. Nintendo is definitely going to be confident with their next release.

PS4 to PS4 pro upgrade cost about $200 with doing smart trade-ins. This is probably going to be a $400-$500 upgrade? I just don't see it. $700 goes so far in modern gaming. If you already have a console there are way better opportunities. PC Upgrades + VR headset can unlock 90% of the PC VR experiences, and you get all the Meta standalone stuff. A Steam-deck-style device can double as a PC and a perfected handheld retro games device. My age might be showing, but buying a nice sound system or nice headphones + a nicer TV / Monitor is probably a better overall upgrade to someone's gaming experience than marginally more pixels on the trees in Spiderman 2.

I want to be able to play my games in 20 years. So either way I'm keeping my OG PS5. I don't like the idea of the detachable disk drive no longer working and me not being able to replace it if the verification server is shut down. If it's a pro model, I expect it to not cut features that the OG has. Especially for the price they want. The only thing I can think that would make me buy it is if GTA 6 is only 30fps on OG PS5 / xbox x and the only way to get 60FPS is PS5 pro (for 12-16 months until PC version is released).

the way i see it, the real advantage of raytracing isn't necessarily better looking games, but that it'll make it easier for developers (especially smaller developers) to make nice looking, more ambitious games. the old ways of doing lighting/shadows and reflections start to become really difficult to implement when the game's environments aren't highly controlled (ie. if you put too many dynamic lights into your game with the old pipeline your performance will tank, and screenspace reflections don't work with mirrors that reach to the floor and other stuff). raytracing requires powerful hardware, but it kind of just works (or it will once the technology matures a bit more)

Good discussion, Jeff. I don’t really get the argument you are making in ”I want a console that does both” however. Not even the highest end pc can max out resolution and framerate at the same time, if the developer wants to push it arbitrarily hard. It will always be a compromise. The true debate should be ”should they let consumers decide the compromise or should they make it for them?”. The answer for pc is clearly to give plenty options. For console they give less options but at least the one toggle.

PlayStation feels like a company/brand that doesn't want to be itself. They'll give you a nostalgia pop like in Astrobot, but they won't back a new Ape Escape. In contrast look at Nintendo. They've just stuck the path and believed in their franchises and characters and something even like Animal Crossing that you wouldn't say is one of their most recognisable IPs sells 20+ million copies. Sony would kill to have a couple of franchises selling 20 million copies with their latest entries. PlayStation has let too much fall by the wayside. Naughty Dog used to be a studio you could rely on each console generation to put out a new and interesting IP - On PS3 they even have 2. How times have changed.

I love the Last of Us but Sony desperately needs to ship more and different games. I generally don't like open world games so this generation has been a giant miss with regards to Sony's studios. Their best games have been remakes, remasters (really liked the roguelight mode in tlou2) and Astro Bot. I had already forgotten about Ratchet & Clank before Jeff mentioned it. It felt more like a tech demo than something the dev team was passionate about.

Astro Bot is amazing. I can't stop playing it. It's constant fun and joy. Worthy of having the highest metascore of any video game this year so far. Definitely the game of the year, it's not even close.

About putting Astro Bot down between every couple of levels; I feel like I was probably higher on the game than you were, but I also agree that there is something weirdly stifling about how the hub/map works and how every level starts with flying in. It puts just enough friction between levels to remove that "on to the next" flow. Whenever I simply jumped into the next level I was super into it as soon as I had bot feet on the ground, but the game giving you an "out" between levels is a feeling that kinda stacks. It's weird. Overall though I *loved* it, and it's readily my GOTY.

Just about rolled on the floor when Jeff mentioned the North American Dreamcast launch, thought he was getting somber about something else. My brother had a PAL EU Dreamcast, i still have the box and the broken console in it (psu and the usual dead GD drive), another 2 working ones lol. Honestly a few of the multiplats where better on Dreamcast but you could get them on PS1 too. It felt like a console in mid swing not a failure, i forget how quick it was discontinued as games still trickled out past 2001. It sold over 9mill, which is the same as the Saturn and that was around longer. The Master System did 10mill + but most of that is probably Brazil sales lmao. At that time PC online was just taking off and we even had online exclusive games like unreal tournament (a LAN classic in high school). Dreamcast was the first to have it forefront and not some wack dial in direct call connect just regular dial up or the rare ethernet broadband adapter. Dreamcast had a vibe and you can't really say that about recent generation consoles, imho even the Switch. Flycast looks awesome with the internal resolution cranked and using a decent controller like the xbox series controller. I like retro fighters modern controller for the Dreamcast but it's just lacking those extra 2 face buttons remapped from the triggers for fighting games.

2:14:43 One thing that I know is getting to me and a lot of people I talk to, is the whole “preorder the game/buy the premium version to play 3 days early” and then the game is fucking broken. So really what is happening there is the hardcore fans that buy the expensive version feel screwed. It happens every time; my friends are excited to play the game early and I’m sitting here like “no you’re not. You’ll be playing on day one with everyone else.” It’s just not worth it to buy the expensive version if what you care about is playing 3 days early. They could probably fix this easily by just never saying “play 3 days early” and instead just try to entice players to buy the deluxe version because of the special cosmetics or the season pass or whatever. I did preorder Outlaws and I didn’t even care about the 3 days early thing because I know it usually sucks. I just looked at it as “I will probably end up buying the season pass, so I might as well save some money by getting the deluxe version now.” And then Ubisoft came out with a patch and recommended that everyone who played early start a new save. I can’t think of a single game where “play 3 days early” worked out. It happened with Diablo 4 and I was just like “why did any of you people think you’d be able to play that 3 days early? You couldn’t even get into a game the first week it was out because of queues.” (At least for me, when I had time to play, I couldn’t play it.)

If you want to listen to a platform specific podcast, might I suggest XBox Era. I usually avoid fanboy sites like the plague. But they have a focus on the platform but aren't MS fanboys. They have well written reviews (actually among the best reviews you can still find on the internet, also usually a video review as well). I started reading / listening regulary because of their VR reviews actually. One of those 3 guys is actually more a Nintendo fanboy than anything.

I bought a PS4 Pro with FFVIIr when it came out. I remember the PS4 Pro doing nearly nothing for any game in my library. If this worked like a PC and you were just getting a pure upgrade I'd buy it if I was in the ecosystem. But it doesn't, they have a little list of games and even those likely won't fully take advantage of it. Also, the console/PC value proposition seems to be cycling again, 5700x3D combos with mobo, RAM and SSD have been everywhere for the past month for $250ish. ...CHANGE PLACES!

The monthly sub is what hurts. I hate how expensive gaming PCs are and how I NEVER can be certain games will work at all no matter how much I spend, but not having to pay a yearly fee for online is looking better every year. And I've been a PS owner since the first one. Maybe a Steam deck would be a fair compromise, I just wish it was slightly stronger and less noisy.

I was white hot on outlaws until the ending, where the game both technically and narratively fell apart for me. A character is revealed, and I immediately thought, “did you have to?”. It to me is almost on par with giving Kay a lightsaber. 700 + no disc drive will be more than enough for me to switch to PC. Especially if ps6 is the same case.

Re: Ray-Tracing. The pitch on ray-tracing was that all the things that used to have to be achieved with tricks, would just come baked in, and look even better. But that assumes a game fully rendered using ray-tracing. Instead right now, it's just another trick game developers can apply to make their games look a little better, at the cost of a bunch of extra work. Ray-tracing is pretty much a dead feature to me, until there are a bunch of video games with fully ray-traced graphics.

The price is moronic. But the claims of ‘just build a PC!’ Will never stop being stupid. Only if the PS5 Pro was $1400 would it even be a discussion.

Thank you. So many PC owner are all "Just buy a affordable PC!" while spending at least twice the amount of a Pro themselves then "upgrade" with a ridiculously priced graphics card every other year.
