Thank you for taking us along for hive inspection and super reducing. My bees take care of themselves. I have left the homestead. We moved on a boat on the east coast this summer. I checked on the bees in November. My daughter suited up for the first time to walk her through my hives. She was great. Patient,slow moving yet had no problem giving a quick tap to the frame to remove the bees, best of all respectful. She will keep my wasp traps maintained. Wasp are a big problem in our area. Glad she will take a few classes and take over my bee yard. I’ll be back in early April for splits. For now my husband and I will cruise the East Coast and my adult kids will take care of our little Texas Ranch and the bees. 🐝

Actually, there is no management, except when there is a dead out. I really do have a hand's off approach to keeping bees. Other than splits and harvesting honey, I do not go into the hives. Thanks for watching. God's peace Andrew. Mr. Ed

Hi Jeff, I understand your philosophy of treatment free and respect your decision for doing so. I only treat once a season. I've seen the 75% losses with neighbor beekeepers who are treatment free. So my treatment is early August to give my bees a better chance of healthy winter bees. As far as inspections of always thought my inspection routine was based on my laziness. I know that my bees did a lot of swarming this past season as I didn't pay close enough attention to them. I.e. I didn't inspect every week. My best inspections were while pulling honey in August and when buttoning them up for winter. Now the hardest thing for me is to wait until April to see how they are doing. I've learned the hard way that I shouldn't bother them before April first. If they are dead in March they will still be dead in April. I'm starting to ramble. Just suffice to say that I agree with your philosophy of minimal inspections. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Have to agree with your way of keeping bees. In fact My grandad always says the best bee keepers are the bees them selves. Marcus Aurelius said two thousand years ago whats bad for the bee is bad for the hive. We never put any thing in our hives that the bees would not put in them selves. They have to cope with every thing nature throws at them. From August 2023 treatment free for 23 years. All I am left with are super strong healthy mite and disease resistant bees. I am probably going to have my 5th loss this winter in 23 years, but hopefully they will pull through.

@@JeffHorchoff I use to live five blocks off of Galveston Bay and we had a dock that went out to ten feet depth water on average for our subdivision. All I had to do was watch the weather and tide charts and I was catching dinner several days per week. Sure helped the grocery bill. Kind of miss those days. Lots of fresh seafood. Crabs, shrimp, and speckled trout. Redfish, sheepshead, flounder, and black drum when trout were slow. All there just for the harvesting. On the weekends I would meet a bunch of neighbors around dark and we would put out a line or two for sand shark and have a block party when we caught one.

Here in Ohio our bees are usually fairly active in the 40s and 50s (as long as it isn't raining), mainly just doing cleansing flights and dragging out the dead bees. We have nearly a year round season for bees because we dont really have a winter here (coastal california) local bee keepers told me that when you keep bees here you basically light every bee keeping book on fire cause none of it applies lol. Its not uncommon to get a big flow in like november-january. Then pop off again march- mid july.

I have to agree on the theory of "not applying bee info." Beekeepers need to know how to keep bees in the specific area they live in. We have had such warm weather here that's it's become a problem for our beekeepers. One of our local, very experienced folks has already lost all 8 of his hives. Changing climate will need new methods.

I am from south africa. Just outside of a small town Lydenburg. In the Mpumalanga regeon. Its a sawmill. So being among 21 households i must be carefull how i treat the bees. I only work them after dark. I get between 10 and 15 half pint jars per small super. I started keeping last year november

My bees in the area that im in are SPICY. So. My style is also. Do as little as possible. And as quick as possible. Then go into the dark room for a while to get rid of the bees that want to kill me. Hi Jeff, I enjoy watching your videos. I understand your "hands off" policy with the bees, but I can't help but feel it is a little harsh. You take honey, but don't always make it easier for the bees to flourish and survive. I can't help feel that you would have fewer dead-outs if you gave them a little bit more supervision and maintenance of the boxes.

I am completely treatment free in all of our bee yards, it's just my way of keeping bees. I shot this video around the 19th of December this year.
