I went down the youtube rabbit hole on traditional bows and must have watched 200+ videos. I'm glad I found yours! I'm 48 and will be buying my first Bow soon. Today I signed up for lessons starting tomorrow. I had it in my mind that I'd buy a 60-58" 50lb reflex/deflex for about $350.00. I figured it'd be tough at first, but that I would build muscle as I went along, since I want to eventually go hunting with it. At the bow shop today I asked to test some pulls to get an idea of the weight and figure out my draw length. My DL is 27.6" I couldn't even pull back a 40lb anywhere near that. A 26lb was Much more comfortable. I still want to build up to a 45 or maybe 50, but I decided after watching this that I'll get a 30-32 for my first bow. They had some nice ones there for about $150.00. Girlie bow it is! Thanks

One of the reasons people have such a difficulty in drawing a heavier weight bow is because they are using the wrong muscles. Nearly all people when they first start out, start out by drawing the bow with their arms. A lighter weight bow will allow you to learn how to engage your back muscles more easily which are by far the larger and stronger upper body muscles. My daughter Lucy has no problem drawing and shooting her 50# bow and even shoots my 55# bows. It's not because she is super strong, it's because she is engaging her back muscles (the proper muscles) when she draws and not her arms.

Hi Jeff, I just got back from my first lesson. More questions than decisions on what kind of bow I want to buy. Turns out I'm Left Eye dominant but Right handed. I was set up with a 20lb Lt Handed Bow. It felt natural enough. I paid for 2 lessons, the first Hr flew by, so I decided to take my second Hr back to back. I didn't have much instruction other than my Lt elbow was a little low on draw back. My shots were mostly going high and to the right. He also kept telling me to close my Rt eye which I didn't want to do, so I didn't. I told him I wanted to shoot instinctive, he kind of laughed and dropped a name I didn't know and said only he could shoot instinctive. There were a lot of students, 6 in 6 lanes., so there really wasn't any instruction. But, that's cool, I'll figure it out. They have a $30/Month plan where you can just come in and shoot as often as you'd like plus $10 if you don't have your own set up. I'm going to try the Right handed bow next time, shoot for 2 hrs, and try to figure out which one I like better. Lastly I have a very Newbie question. What happens if you shoot Right handed on a Left handed Bow? It seems like having the draw hand on the same side as the shelf would make sense. I'll most likely try that out too, when no ones watching. Sorry for the long post.
@bigbadger69
@bigbadger69 7 жыл бұрын
I'm not Jeff, but if you're shooting instinctively, your eye dominance isn't as big a factor as it is in olympic archery. Instinctive shooting is very hard, and requires many, many arrows fired and years of experience to master. That might be the reason why your instructor chuckled. I'm also left eye dominant, right handed, and I shoot a right hand bow. I squint slightly with my left when shooting, and that settles it for me. Shooting right handed on a left handed bow will be interesting, since most bows have pistol grips these days. They'll usually force your hand into a position from which you'll have trouble hitting anything. Shooting right handed from a left handed shelf is a debated "historical" technique." I think you're approaching it correctly, though. Try your own stuff! Figure out what's fun for you, and keep doing that! I hope you're still shooting! Cheers from Norway. :)

Gday Jeff, new subscriber here. Ive just had shoulder surgery and my Occupational Therapist, who is into Horse Archery, told me to put my 70 lb PSE compound back in the cupboard and get a 22lb recurve to reteach my shoulder how to use a bow. Best advice I have ever got. But your videos reinforced her advice. Thanks mate.

Once again, you are spot-on, Jeff. My hunting bows are all 45-55# but with this concept in mind I bought a '69 Bear Tamerlane in 35# and never shot better than I do with it. You can hold the draw all the livelong day and it gives you time to work on the details of the shot and release. Thanks for all you do and I hope you heal quickly.

I likely shouldn't be because I can't get my elbow up high enough when I draw and if I do it hurts and I flinch. I will find out more next week I guess.

I've subscribed and really enjoy watching you shoot and listening to your great advice. I'm not a traditional archer but I'm about to be. I started out as a kid shooting a Pearson hickory bow and I forgot how much fun that is. I'm 63 years old and shoot a 50lb. Mathews HTR no cam dialed down to 44 lbs which is a great bow for an old man. I'm going to get a 30 to 35 pounder and I really like the Bear AuSable probably because I like Fred and the River but you're right about shooting a bow that you can handle. I've been harvesting deer for years with fantastic success shooting less than 45 lbs because of bad shoulders. I shoot no further than 20 yds on deer and 30 on turkeys and get both every year! Thank you for the great videos and excellent advice, you're a good man and the best video out there!

Hi Jeff very wise words mate, I have recently got back into Archery after 20 years break and now at 67 years of age I really struggled to pull back and hold my magnificent Bear Kodiak Magnum that is 55 pounds but at my draw weight probably 50 pounds at my fingers. Anyway I went out about a month ago and purchased a Samick Sage at 40 pounds and being having lots of fun and guess what I can now hold and draw my Kodiak not quite as far back as I would like but getting there. So yep not a problem to start light or drop back till one gets stronger, I have done weight training for a long long time so that definitely has helped me keep strong at this age.

I bought a Sky Archery ILF bow. I have 40lb and 55lb limbs. Its nice because the feel of the grip is always the same. I just make sure to not shoot past 15 yards with the 40lb limbs because the trajectory is a lot different between the two. I think everyone should start with a light weight bow. Great video!

Truer words never spoken when it comes to draw weight. One has to leave their ego behind when they go to the archery range. It’s the same as working out in the gym. Guys using more weight than they can perform the exercise with good form. Machismo can really screw up a good thing.

Good stuff Jeff. Nice shooting of course, but the "Get to the choppa!!!" was spot on. Glad your flinging arrows again. I enjoy my lower weight draw bow to break in and It soften my gloves when I get new ones. As a full time musician I have the chance to shoot hundreds of arrows most days and gloves don't last more than a month or two. Your videos have given me great insight into the fundamentals of instinctive archery and how to find my own "zone" in shooting. As well as a few laughs here and there (water bucket finger release is what I picture before my shot...it wasn't a "bust" at all") and sometimes water/ice/elbows everywhere! Peace

I have the same pse bow in 30# and I bought it for the same reason. I started with a 40# pse mustang but just wasn't getting the hang of it and I knew I was having bad form because it was too much weight to start with. I got the lighter bow to help me learn better form, and it worked. I agree, the lighter bow will definitely show a bad release. Eventually I got better and now I shoot the 40# with ease, and also a 50# pse ghost that I shoot fairly well with.

I worked up to the weight, but it would have been better to start off with a lighter draw weight. I know have a 40# Montana and a 50# AuSable... I think that most guys start with way to powerful a bow, or try to progress to rapidly to a heavier poundage when they get into archery. The chances of tearing your rotator cuff is very real, and ends a lot of archers plans.

As one gets older and suffers health issues, one is forced to shoot lighter bows if they want to continue to hunt or shoot. A man has to know his limitaitons (heard that in a movie) and be willing to work around them. This also means taking closer shots than you used to. hunting with a lighter but tuned bow with sharp broadheads still gets those results. I have a deer skull in the house with an arrow sticking out just above and between the eyes. It jerked it's head up when I shot my 38 lb bow with bear razorhead lites. I was aiming to hit it between the shoulders and the broadhead still made it to them. A complete skull pass thru with a light bow at maybe ten yards.

I came off a compound to traditional...... 40ish... I purchased 1 recurve and longbow both #60lb. They were sold, later. Then 50lb hoyt gamemaster... then given away to my son. Still owing a 50lb longbow... I never shoot now. Some 45lb recurves(2). Now I have 2 nice 40lb recurves but on the heavy side... like 41 & 42lbs. 1 blackwidow 40 exact. Just ordered my Bearpaw hybrid longbow in 35. My 40's... I can shoot ok but they are a little heavy for extended shooting. I'm hoping my 35 will be the one. Then I see your videos.... and your young daughter shooting 50lb bows. And I think... Retired now...I used to be a railroad track worker for 28yrs. and I can't do better then 40lbs? Call me a Wussy... I think I will be a much better archer at 35lbs than 40. I don't hunt anyways... I do want to do some indoor 300's and 450's... strictly instinctively. I'm studying Rick Welch style. Good Video

This is the second of your videos I have seen. The first was the review of the AuSable longbow. After seeing your daughter handle the 50# longbow like it was a child’s toy I was waiting to find out your idea of a ‘girly bow’ was 80#. Really glad you made this video. After two shoulder surgeries I am thinking of investing in a REALLY nice 35# bow and just staying at that weight for a long time (don’t hunt anymore). You convinced me that is the smart choice. Thank you.

Glad to see you back shooting again, Jeff. I like to grab my wife's bow from time to time just for that reason. I heard this once before about the benefits of a low poundage bow an practicing form with it. ( mine still sucks because I did the same as you started with a bow I could legally hunt with and never pursued it because I sucked , because my form sucked) But if I may be so bold I have would like to say I have discovered another thing. My wife and I got into 3d shooting and love going to the meets. After 60 shoots and 5or 6 miles of hiking shooting a lighter poundage bow is nicer to shoot at the end of the day. I also see an increase in my scores. Just something I have noticed in my own shooting. Could even have been one of your videos that mentioned the benefits of training with lighter bows. Thanks again and keep it coming. You have so many great tips and the more the better.

+sparky elven great stuff. I just spoke with someone who had sore fingers after shooting. They figured they needed a better glove or o try a thick tab maybe. Turns out this particular time they shot for a much greater extended period of time. It wasn't wasn't the glove or the wear on their fingers but the fatigue from shooting so much longer than normal. I am talking about aver all fatigue, not in their fingers. Fatigue in their shooting frame and back tension which manifested its self in a poor release and sore fingers.
@sprk11
@sprk11 8 жыл бұрын
+Jeff Kavanagh I had something similar with the sore fingers, and like you say , one part fatigue and one part soft fingers. I was more than a year off from shooting after tearing my bicep off. Infact I think it helped my for as it made it very hard to use arm strength to draw and had to use more back strength. Now I don't know if it was an issue before but one thing that has come up is a high elbow and now a bad fallow thru. I have trouble turning my fist vertical tho it's coming along and have been using a modified thumb release. But the bigger issue is I have trouble keeping my hand close to my face to touch my ear. I don't know if this is a result of my surgery or that the injury it's self has left scaring that won't allow for the movement. I'm finding the I anchor to my chin and stay there is giving me the most consistent results, tho I am finding that changing my form works better at different distances. It's the one that puzzles me the most.

First of all, thank you for these excellent videos. I am new to archery and these are the best help. I do have a question about what your eye sees as you look at the target. In the videos we see you but we don't see what you see. Once you have your right hand in position at the corner of your mouth, are you seeing the arrow shaft, arrow point, string...? Is it similar to trap shooting- seeing front sight in peripheral vision. What am I to be aware of? Thanks

I have a 45# samik sage bow. After wrecking my motorcycle last month and spraining my left shoulder I'm not able to shoot this weight very long. I am right handed. Which limbs should I look into getting ? The 35# or the 40#? I am just starting out with the instinctive shooting. Any help would be appreciated.

How much does it affect you accuracy when going from say a #50 bow to a #35 when it comes to instinctive shooting

Great video once again! I've been shooting instinctive for about 4 months now and my finger tab is falling apart. Is there a glove that you can recommend? Also, what arrows do you mostly use? carbon, aluminum, or cedar?

I got a 18 Pound bow for my first shooting lesson from my teacher. I am very sporty and train with expanders and I am 1,89m tall. In the 3. Session I got a 22 Pound and it was easy as shit. I can shoot that the whole day without getting tired. I guess when I am patent I can go up 2 pounds every session while improving my skill. On how you talk I guess I could go more heavy.

Great, great advice Jeff! I have a question: Do you recommend a light super mag 48" at say around 35-40#? Or do you really recommend a training recurve like you and your son have? I normally shoot between the 50 and 60#. Thanks!
@JeffKavanagh
@JeffKavanagh 8 жыл бұрын
+ExiledExia well the Super Mag 48" will definitely show you when you are messing up. I wouldn't recommend the Super Mag to anyone learning how to shoot. It's a great bow and I love the one we have but it is not for a beginner.

My husband just started shooting and I had him get a 25 lb right off. Working each day on a part of my shot sequence. Some days just nail 3-4 in a row and I say, "Why did that happen?" Do you use the string in your vision to help aim, or do you just keep focus ahead on a small site? Lucy is so good after a couple of years...should trad beginners realistic expectations of good groupings consistently be in years? Really hope your shoulder is on the mend. I am sure it is going to be a process. Thanks always for the great videos! Your the best teacher.

+c nevett Hi. No I don't see the string at all when I shoot. Not even much of the arrow for that matter, just my target but I also shoot instinctively. With good instruction no I don't think it should take years at all. Everyone is a little different and having good individual instruction is key but I have had some people shooting " groups" (pie plate size) at 10 to 15 yards in just a few lessons. It's not rocket science.

New shooter. Loving the videos! How about bow length? Is there an "ideal" length to pick to go along with the pull strength?
@JeffKavanagh
@JeffKavanagh 8 жыл бұрын
generally speaking the longer the bow he more forgiving and easier to shoot because of the lesser string angle and pinch. A shorter bow can be easier to torque but much of it depends on the type of bow as well.

Hey Jeff, love your videos! I will be buying my first longbow for backyard casual target shooting and learning, this will be my first bow. I keep seeing the 35# weight referenced a lot as being a great start weight, I was thinking of starting with the 30# Montana, will I regret it? Should I go for the 35?
@JeffKavanagh
@JeffKavanagh 8 жыл бұрын
+Dimitris A The 30# will be a great bow. You won't have any regrets. Many who start out will get 18 or 20# bows.

Get a 30lb to start, even if you're Arnold. You need a lighter bow for practice. I found a 39lb Ben Pearson years ago in a junk shop for $5.47 (US). It is in perfect shape.

Hi Jeff, my question is unrelated to the video, but hopefully you can still give me your two cents. It's about stringing a bow that exceeds my height. It is only an inch longer than my wingspan, but I cannot for the life of me string my own bow for this reason! It's an odd and very specific problem - so unique that I've scoured multiple forums but could not find a solution. What do you think?
@JeffKavanagh
@JeffKavanagh 8 жыл бұрын
+Mandy Leung You're too short. Sorry I couldn't resist on that one. Are you using a stringer? If so have you tried changing the length of your stringer, either shortening it or lengthening it a bit? It should help. Please let me know if it does.

+Jeff Kavanagh Hope you don't mind me pestering you with one more quick question - do you think that shooting off an arrow rest changes accuracy or the shot in any way? Is it less preferable than shooting off the shelf? Thanks again
