Jeff you have to remember population efficiency is important as well. Since peasants appear at a fixed rate, (more or less) the army size is ultimately limited also by how many recruits there are in a certain amount of time. Therefore a player with more cost efficient and cheaper army could be beaten by a more expensive and stronger army.

I'd say generally this is why I end up not using them. It is hard to fit in a half-tank half-papermache unit

Yeah but these are great if you run out of money and you can turn off your production buildings to raise more troops when needed, that's why it's also important to have high as possible population.

Honestly, a Melee unit that beats all Melee Unit but is utter trash towards ranged is a pretty neat thing. Just wish they wouldn't make spearman as useless as they are, especially without UCP Running/Balance.

Spears not only balance out the cost, the spears can be sold for 10 gold. So alonefor the spear you get one monk xD (if you have the cathedral already...)

I remember my first multiplayer game in Stronghold Crusader. It was 1v1 via GameSpyArcade. We were both poor players, but I managed to win, cause I was able to train more monks.

Monks are best to defend catapults as meet shields agaisnt enemy rocks xD They are far cheaper than shields... and also do quite well against a few assassins or knights

They might be best used for defense inside a keep. With the cheap cost it might not be bad to spend 200 gold for 20 units when you're being stretched thin in a hopeless situation.

for sure a good combination, nullify arrows with 35 gold a piece shields, get 1/3 damage due to height advantage as well there.

That's what I usually do too. I keep a crack squad of Monks (usually 10+) as my last line of defense for my Lord, and if enemies do breach the walls and start advancing towards the Keep, I throw any remaining peasants into Monks since buildings hamper the shots of any archers and crossbowmen who also come into my castle.

They are the best defensive melee unit. If your walls are breached and the enemy approaches your stronghold, a horde of monks can be your saving grace.

Abbot shoulda been a much better SHC AI, if his attacks were weren't monks, only defense. Still woulda fit the character well I think and made him a top contender. A strongest to weakest arrow defense video would be nice.

Its rare I don't use monks against bots. The cathedral essentially makes free monks over time when you include taxes once you get the up front investment done.

@@MadcatMashupMayhem I just now played the game with abbot with (40k gold for abbot and 3k gold for me) without using any kind of archers , moat or traps but it was still quite easy (it took some time though). I used slingers and firethrowers as defence and for attack I used blistas , catapults , assasins and easily won.

make like 300 of them, have 30 shields in control group 1, and 50 slinger on groups 2-7. You can outrun everyone, have crazy short range attack and a great melee if you stack them up onto enemies. If there are too many stacked enemies - just run around them and throw rocks at them, when there are few of them just run over them.

The idea is this, iirc: Aggressive stance units chase enemies when the enemies entered a certain radius or when the units are attacked, with the downside of the units don't return to its original position. Defensive stance units don't actively chase enemies unless when attacked, and will return to their original position after a certain radius. Stationary units will not chase enemies, but can attack enemies within their weapon range.

Battlemonks are superior in Stronghold 2 Multiplayer. With a bit of time you can place down enough statues that you can spam them with no problem since they're only 1 gold and 10 honor if I'm not mistaken and you can overhelm an opponent with knights with sheer mass. They're like ants and you can mass produce them so easily.
