Let’s not forget that Carl Palmer ( and ELP) were pioneers and pushing the boundaries way back in the early 70’s. Carl with his synth percussion on brilliant songs like Toccata and to reproduce that live then was just amazing. Carl is a very traditional but technical drummer and can no way be compared to the late great Neil Peart whose style was completely different. I love both drummers and it’s a disgrace that ELP have never been recognised in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame! 🤷‍♂️

Between Asia, and the Carl Palmer band, I’ve seen him play live six times now, and my jaw is at the bottom of the floor every time. The precision, the energy, the power, the acceleration, left-hand speed, and the incredible finesse… Are all things that, indeed, imo make him the greatest drummer of all time. And I think he’s in his 70s now and there’s still not very many drummers of any age who can even carry his stick bag.

He is one of the best drummers in all of modern time for sure. A well educated musician as we saw with ELP. Not only is he great in rock but Jazz and classical adaptations. Not many drummers have that type of genre. If ELP had stayed together through the years he would have been more widely known. I remember when Rush did the last tour all of a sudden people noticed Neil P. People who never played music in their life or studied music were telling me how NP was the greatest in the world. He also was Very very good. The same when Cream was on top. I remember how many told me Ginger Baker , was the greatest. Drummer Jack Bruce Greatest Bass Player and of Clapton best guitar. As for Technique, AKA good chops in Percussion. @@morbidmanmusic I've been playing drums for 15+ years. And I cannot name one example where 'traditional' (mind the word) grip has an advantage. It effectively limits your left hand to the right half of your reach. Players who use it must train to overcome this limit and it only puts strain on the left arm, but has no benefits compared to matched grip. It's purely a matter of what you've gotten used to. If you look at the kits of traditional grip players, they rarely put anything important on the left hand side. Great players who use it aren't great because of it, but in spite of it.

An all-time great, who along with Neil Peart and a very select group of others, turned the percussion into a powerful even exotic instrument rather than an accompanying, background pace setting driver of a band's music. Even in his 70s, Carl is as good as anyone out there. The Buddy Rich of rock drummers-and that is saying something! (BTW, I would suggest watching Carl's iconic solo from the live concert in Montreal in '76, which is as good as any solo ever played in rock music.)

There is a tear on the snare side of his snare drum . Hence the snares off sound to the drum . No doubt one of the best ever, saw him many times in the 70's and once in the 90's (he was great even then) . Now in 2022 face it the man is slowing down, doing what he does is not easy at his age .

One of the first to include a double bass drum set up into classic rock music, after Ginger Baker and a few others, and one of the first to actually make good use of it. Dudes still together than a lot of modern metal drummers today

I am very happy to know that Carl Palmer is still going strong. He is one of my favorite drummers. He is among the very best, but look at his early influences: Joe Morello, Philly Joe Jones, Art Blakey, Gene Krupa and Buddy Rich. In this particular drum solo, I also hear Joe Morello, and especially see Buddy Rich toward the end when he was using the snare. In my opinion though, Buddy Rich, pound per pound was the world's greatest. I don't think anyone would ever accomplish what he has done.

Respectfully, he isn't the best at all. He's average relative to players in jazz, fusion, etc. Expand those horizons. Start with one of the greatest to ever live in the video I will post, then research the thousands of more advanced players like Weckl, Colauita, Coleman, Sucherman, Borlai, Royster, Lewis, Pridgen, Chambers, Smith, etc. Start here and see how unbelievable some drummers are. - Virgil Donati Drum Solo kzbin.info/www/bejne/gYCVaHakeZeYpqc
