As a teaching drummer of over 30 years, I have to say Jeff that that is some of the best teaching of grip and techniques I’ve ever seen. I love what you left out as well. No talking about where on your index finger the stick should stay, just get it on there. A lot of the grip has to be discovered. I like the golfer Ben Hogan’s quote it’s something like, “the answers you seek are in the dirt.” Your playing sounds amazing and your production is over the top. Congratulations man for making amazing videos and thanks for sharing your knowledge and your enthusiasm.

From a teacher to a teacher: well done, really. Those who, in various manners, criticize and/or ridiculize this video either do not have any clue about its content or are guys who simply have no ambition to take a commitment on becoming a better drummer. Technique and feeling are not enemies, if you say that you're totally missing the point and/or have no ambitions. Nice job, Jeff. 👍🏼

So great someone finally stepped up and did this video. I am really happy for every beginner to now have access to a lecture that brings together what I had to condensate by myself over the years watching hours and hours of videos on hand technique. You were able to accomplish that in 12 minutes, which is a big deal! You are really doing an excellent job at preparing and presenting your material. KZbin education par excellence! 👏

Your video is absolutely amazing. Because you focus on sound and mechanics rather than anything else, you allow players to focus on what matters the most : freedom to produce the sounds we seek. However, what is insanely good here is your ability to condense a lot of crucial information taught through a lot of drummers during decades but in a neutral way. This is instruction at its purest : you don't have an agenda, you just want to help. And what you teach here takes years to truly master and use freely. I can't even believe this video is free... You have my deepest sympathies. I will share this video with every drummer I know because it is simply wonderfully crafted. Thank you, truly 🙏

In high school band, one summer, I taught my self fast/loud double strokes. I did so by practicing on a soft non-rebounding surface and inducing a rebound with my fingers as you last technique. This video certainly clarifies much for me. I especially liked your use of multiple techniques on different cymbals and drums. And what's funny is your spot-on opening with other instructors showing you a grip than taking off.

This is the best lesson ever! You put it all together so succinctly! Years and years of working on technique and this helps me relax knowing it really is a mix and flow of all the techniques- and that blending them prevents arm fatigue. That’s my biggest take away- now I can use different muscle groups and techniques to not only get a better sound, but to keep my arm from falling off when I’m playing 8 mins of 16th note HH grooves at a fast tempo. Awesome. Thanks Jeff!

I subscribed at 4 minutes into this video. I took lessons for a few years starting when I was 16, played on and off, didn’t play in any meaningful capacity for a good 10 years and purchased an e-drum again this year. I‘m 41 now and this is the first time somebody clearly spelled out why it might be a good idea to play the cymbals with more of a french grip. To those who might need help, I will add that if you have great control over your body and mouvements (overall) and a good posture, it will be far easier. I felt tight few years ago. I had bad posture and was not well into my own body. I started to stretch and to workout and it made the biggest difference for me. My balance is also far better now. In the end what we are seeking is a natural flow of mouvement without tension with our arms and legs. It's misson impossible with a tight body.

Hey Jeff, great video. You are a fine drummer and a fine teacher. I’ll be studying this one closely. I started drumming in 197?, stopped when I went to college, and only got interested again with my own kids in the late 2000s. As someone raised on rock drummers who certainly didn’t have the overwhelming volume of instruction available to us today, I never worried too much about technique. I just banged on drums because it felt good and I could sort of sound like my heroes. But this video hits the ABCs for me: Accuracy, Brevity, Clarity. About something worth learning about doing correctly, now that I’m 59 and technique issues can lead to actual injuries (which wasn’t a problem when I was 15 or 16). Thanks!

I have to give you credit for explaining strokes the way that would have helped me when I started playing in 1969. Other than a few months of lessons, I am self-taught. What I and my drummer friends were limited to do back then was get plenty of concert tickets and sit as close to the band as possible. After the concert we'd spend hours over days discussing what we saw the drummer do. I used to say that anyone can play the drums and although that could be true, it takes a lot of study and practice to bring out your natural talent. In the end we should all be having fun!

Sawwwce....I like it! In 30+ years of playing, this is literally the simplest explanation of the Moeller method I've heard/watched. Seriously, this would've made it so MUCH quicker to learn many, many, years ago. I started learning it back then but gave up on it when it didn't click within the first week or so. For me, and no doubt many others, grasping at least the basics of a new method relatively early in the learning process gives me the feeling that there is progress so I continue learning. If that doesn't happen then I feel as though I am not getting it and will move on to something else. Love the content of your videos and how simple you explain things. Absolutely key for a new player. Well done sir!!
