There is a really interesting interview with the dad taking about having dark thoughts himself but never being motivated to act on them and he blamed himself. It makes you wonder if there is some genetic factor. Or it could just be the dad wanted attention or just plain parental guilt. Also I think part of why he was famous was because he did answer so many of the hows and whys.

Its important to note that his victims were mostly black men and he lived in a predominantly African American apartment complex. So the ladies that reported the young man were likely black women.
