It is much better than most other documentaries. I must say I just read The Shrine of Jeffrey Dahmer and it is a really great book. Lots of details and things I didn't know. One possible mistake though is it said Jeff was obsessed with watching Exorcist 2, when it apparently was actually Exorcist 3... those are two very different movies. And Exorcist 3 makes perfect sense if you watch it, it reminds me of Jeff's wacky humor and is more of a comedy horror.

This is one of the better documentary’s out there on Dahmer’s crimes. It sticks to the facts. These are people that knew him personally talking about him. When you know someone personally you have the ability to humanize them in a way that you’re not capable of just by hearing a media story on them. If I found out someone close to me did these horrible crimes, I’d be conflicted and confused and stunned. Conflicted in that I’m appalled by the crimes they did, but the other part of knows this human side of them that I’ve known for decades. You don’t just shut it off. That’s where that saying comes from, “A child only a parent could love.” Because the love doesn’t stop even though you feel grotesque about this particular immoral thing the child had been doing.

Don't tell me that he had a "normal" childhood. He was obviously neglected and was not very important to his parents. If my child was picking up road kill and dissecting it, I honestly think I would know. He had way too much time alone, with no guidance whatsoever. If someone payed attention to him, things might have been different. In NO WAY do I condone what he did. But you should always look at thier childhood for clues. And the clues were ignored. I put a LOT of blame on his parents for not being there for him. They just couldn't care less it seems. Mom was psychotic and dad was just the bread winner. He was all alone from day one. He feared abandonment because he WAS abandoned. From the minute he was born.

My brother was interested in strange things like dead animals, which I wasn’t. And he outgrew that became a normal adjusted being. There is no one size fits all reasoning behind what will propel someone to turn into a serial killer. What you presented are just theories and suggestions, but not factual.

I really don't think it's a huge red flag if kids are curious about what bones look like. Boys, especially, are curious about what little girls might consider "gross". I can remember dissecting fetal pigs and frogs in school and the boys loved it. When I became a teacher, my male students were interested in stuff like that too and none of them turned out to be killers. In my humble opinion, I think the problem is is a mixture of several things: 1) he had inner conflict with homosexuality, therefore he could not openly have a relationship, so he began a life of secrecy.. 2) mixed with severe feelings of abandonment (which is why he wanted to keep parts of them with him)...3) combined with having been desensitized to death...4) plus, you add in that this fascination happening during his sexual maturity. 5) He also had sexual fetishes of wanting to dominate during sexual relations (which is why he wanted them incapacitated and wanted total control). So basically you have a kid desensitized to death who is incredibly lonely, fearful of rejection and abandonment due to his homosexuality, who loves to have total control, and also going through puberty. So you have a recipe for disaster. The only thing I can say I respect him for (for lack of a better word) is once he was caught, he didn't lie. He flat out said "I don't want a lawyer. I want to get it all out there and be honest because I want to know why I am the way that I am". Meanwhile, Gacy and Bundy and Gary Ridgeway all lied about their crimes and blamed it on porn, etc. I'm NOT saying I respect him, but I do respect the fact that he came clean and literally asked for the death penalty.
@mewe1023
@mewe1023 5 ай бұрын
He said he was not influenced by all of that because he didn't know anything about like that. You metioned all of the things about how he is and yet ignoring that fact it all came from his childhood. You acted like it came from nothing but him. Like that police men said Adults failed him..His parents, Teachers. Mainly his parents, He was left alone because his parents was selfish, they left him and married someone they loved. I mean how fricking selfish thing for a parent to left and didn't care about your own child while he was going through puberty and teenhood. They abandoned him, that was the first mistake. Morbid curiosity at early stage second mistake. If your child was like that you shouldn't leave them. Saying nothing affected him, it was all him is just idiotic and blind.

Because they know what we didn't know and a guy like Edward kemper(serial killer) knows exactly what he did and said what caused that. Without knowing the problems, we cannot find solutions.

@@mewe1023 I see a lot of patients who have childhood trauma and it's interesting how differently it affects people (for instance, Dahmer's brother didn't go down the same road). I think it's a mixture of childhood abandonment, shame of homosexuality, the need for secrecy, curiosity of death, and a lot of it happened during puberty. As for comparing him to other killers, the ones I named (Bundy, Gacy, Ridgeway) all denied the crimes. Eventually they came clean (Bundy only came clean to try and avoid the death penalty). Dahmer seemed to genuinely want to know why he is the way he is. Confessing doesn't make him a hero by any means (I used the word respect in the original post because I couldn't think of another word at that moment). His dad wanted him to plead insanity but in my opinion, he wasn't insane because he knew right from wrong (and Dahmer also stated he knew what did was wrong). His mom wanted his brain examined after death, but we've done stuff like that before, and it turned out normal. Most of the time, we don't really know what makes a killer. Some say that certain people are born evil. Some say it's genetic mental health disorders. Some say it's environment. It's probably a mixture of everything.

But the one thing they DO NOT get is priceless and that’s love,being there and knowing when your child needs help. JMO. In another documentary it was said that his mother told his father during a row that she would never allow him to do to the younger son what he did to Jeffrey. There was no sign of what this was or the father's response if any. But the mother came from a dysfunctional family where alcoholism and some form of abuse was part of it. There is no information on the kind of upbringing the father came from but it's pretty clear he was a very controlling person where Jeffrey was concerned. It has also been said that Jeffrey Dahmer very probably had Asperger's Syndrome which would account for his lack of emotion when talking about his crimes, his monotone voice, social awkwardness and isolation when growing up and general lack of eye contact for any length of time. AS was barely known about in the early 90s, especially in adults, so he would not have benefited from early intervention as a child, much less as an adult as many people did in later times. Not that AS could in any way be blamed for his crimes, in fact the opposite, but it would have brought him more difficulties in dealing with growing up in a very dysfunctional and possibly abusive family as well as not being able to assert himself and instead retreating into passivity. His dread of being abandoned has often been mentioned. I think this was very real for him in that neither parent was available emotionally for him and his mother literally abandoned him and took the younger son with her. Yes he was 18 and legally an adult, but what mother would leave a son all alone by himself for months when there was no need since the father was kept away by a court order? She was also supposed to have told him she was wasn't taking him with her because he had never liked her! It seems a very cruel thing to have done. Clearly he had very serious psychological problems which were probably created by a traumatic childhood and an overly controlling father. In another interview he very perceptively said he believed his problems stemmed from a desire to be in control because he felt he had no control during his childhood. This need for control over his victims is also reflected in his crimes which he openly talked about. He was very intelligent and was said to be in the top IQ percentile which is classed as very gifted. None of this excuses the monstrous things he did and the pain he caused the relatives of his victims but he was not simply a heartless monster with no feelings but a very damaged and traumatized person which any of us could become given the same background and experiences. It is such a terrible and tragic situation for everyone involved.

she might've been protecting David (the younger son) from Jeff. Much like I believe Ed Kemper's mom was trying to protect her daughters from him by giving him the basement room. There was one interview with Jeff where he said he tried to molest David and he said something like, "He didn't go for that AT all." Like he thought he might enjoy it. O_O

@@cautionTosser Did he actually say "molest"? It seems strange because it's been said his younger brother visited him in prison a number of times. Why would he do that if Dahmer had tried to molest him? It seems likely the mother thought that as Dahmer was legally an adult she had no more responsibility for him and that it was more convenient for her to have just one of the kids with her instead of two.

@@cautionTosser I don't think it's really important whether he used the word or not but if he tried to do that with his brother I can't understand why his brother would visit him in prison a number of times. It could have been they were playing around and things went a bit too far. It's quite common where you hear of siblings of the same and opposite sexes experimenting in sexual ways with each other and if they get caught the parents are horrified. But in most cases it's innocent in intent. Kids are naturally very curious and like to explore lots of things they don't understand. Obviously his brother didn't take it too seriously or hold it against him and it's not as if Dahmer forced himself on his brother by using his age and strength to get his way. Very likely a one off occurrence.

His lawyer and family wanted to get him off on the basis of insanity but insanity is not knowing right from wrong. If he didn't know it was wrong, he wouldn't have been doing these things in secrecy and trying to get rid of the evidence of the murders. Ed Gein and Andrea Yates are good examples of insanity. They didn't know what they did was wrong. Gein literally told the townspeople that the missing woman was dead and in his house. They didn't believe him. He didn't realize that it was wrong. Andrea Yates believed she was doing her kids a favor because they were headed to hell because they were disobedient and she felt that since kids don't go to hell, she was helping them by killing them when they were kids, so they can go to heaven and therefore, her murdering them "saved their souls". She also fully confessed and cooperated as well. Jeffrey knew what he did was wrong, therefore he could not be considered insane.

What a huge waste indeed. Jeff was extremely tormented and conflicted with his own sexuality, was bullied at school, and may have felt emotionally neglected at home. His mother was very unhappy and suffered herself from severe depression, his father was absorbed with his work, although he did try to help his son in many ways he could. But no one knew what was torturing him in his head, it could simply not be expressed for fear of shame and potential discrimination in a small town in the 70s. He became increasingly isolated and lonely, that does no good mentally for anyone let alone a young man like him then. The constant fights with his parents eventually leading to their divorce at his most vulnerable time had certainly impacted on him even more. There was no solace for him except turning to booze to try and numb his mental agony but this would have made things further worse, leading to psychosis, a very dangerous place to be in. His ‘hobby’ was rather peculiar to say the least. Cutting open dead animals to study their internal anatomy could have taken a positive turn if he was interested in biology and medicine, he could have become a surgeon and made a good career for himself. The problem was that his attraction to internal organs became a sinister one and this is what went terribly wrong for him but mostly for his unfortunate victims and families. I have read and watched ‘My friend Dahmer’ by John Backderf who appears on this documentary and had some reservations about him too because Jeff was never his friend, not really. Calling him a freak because he was drinking heavily already and was behaving strangely. That should have been a cause for deep concern but instead, he and his friends were having fun at his own expense and some of the things that they did was pretty cruel and could have further contributed to his suffering. He was then cut off and ostracised afterwards, I cannot say that I was impressed with the way they treated him either, let’s put it that way. Troubling to say the least. What Jeffrey did subsequently was unspeakable as such, let’s make no mistake about that, however it was an absolute tragedy for all concerned. Terrible tragedy.

This guy reminds me a little of an older brother of mine. He used to disect animal's,, while they were alive sometimes. I think he was gay and used to like to control and torture us, who were younger and smaller...Growing up with him I think may have wrecked me too.

Kinda sad they spent so much time with him they actually started to care about him. In my opinion he should've had the same treatment he gave his victims, without killing him.

Seems you kind of missed the point of the whole documentary.

He was sane but there certainly was something else deeper going on inside of him. All his actions sort of stemmed from him wanting people to not leave him. He felt alone.He just took it abit too far

Almost all have a sympathetic attitude towards him and are painting him as a victim than the psychotic sadist that he is.

Because these are people that knew him personally. When you know someone personally you have the ability to humanize them in a way that you’re not capable of just by hearing a media story on them.

@@beachstreet101 The documentary is good.However,I don’t agree with Dahmer being given any sympathy.The pain he caused cannot be excused.He should be studied as an example of human depravity.That’s all.

You would too if you befriended him. It's sad that someone is so evil and there's nothing you can do to help them. He's trapped in his own warped mind. No one would want to be in his shoes.
