I have R12 and will stay with it. I was on the last round of Beta for R13 and aside from the things you mentioned there were no groundbreaking advances. The sticker shock of $199 for the upgrade did me in. I may wait till the newness factor of the release subsides and they have a Black Friday special and drop the price. That Polytone synth though was sweet. But then so are the 100 others I have that do the same thing.

I invested a whole lot of money into the Reason ecosystem for each and every update of the perpetual license and each and every rack extension be it from Reason Studios or from 3rd party developers. With the constant pressure of pushing people towards the subscription based model, Reason 12 was the last time I payed for an update. With the release of Reason 13 I left this train not willing to support this business model anymore. I do this with a heavy heart because Reason was always my weapon of choice but I can no longer justify spending money for a product where I no longer agree with the product strategy of the company. Thanks Jef for doing this video.

Yep with you on that, I feel stupid having put money into the paid version and only use it now for the Robotic Bean Step Sequencer. If they ever bring that out as a vst then I'll stop using Reason altogether. I'm not paying £199 for an update that is so meh that it should have been given away.

@@soundsfromYYBY Raising the price of a perpetual license to $500 and upgrade price to $200 was done to ruin the value of a perpetual license against just paying $20 a month to sub. Not giving perp.lic buyers the same rack devices and players that subs get so they have to buy them separately at full price if they want them. And subs get all of the soundpacks and content, which buyers don't get. I don't think that's how you should treat your loyal customers.

@@soundsfromYYBY Dude, if you want to hand them $240 a year and then lose access to your DAW the first month you don't pony up the $20 rent, be my guest. This idea of constantly paying out but never owning anything is BS. Clearly Reason favors it's renters over it's owners, and that is what I'm objecting to.

You, along with other music production “reviewers”, provide a great service to this community. You deserve all the perks that you can get. The same people that accuse you of being “sold” for a few dollars would probably never give you a penny for your work, yet they benefit greatly from it. That is a sense of entitlement that I simply cannot understand. Your videos are full of useful information that allow us to make difficult decisions. Thank you for the time that you put in to develop this content. Please DO NOT turn down the small perks that you can get because of some hypercritical and ungrateful KZbin consumers. As far as Reason+, it may not be a bad idea for me. I already own everything from Native Instruments and Arturia, so I don’t NEED another suite of instruments, yet this looks really cool. I would mind noodling with it for a month, from time to time. 👍

It's times like this when GAS pays off in the long run. That impulse buy I did getting Reason 11 suite during covid was the best Reason purchase I made so far. What's stopping me from getting R13 atm is the upgrade price. I only pay $100 or even less during the summer sale for Cubase. I also bought Friktion and couple other things during sales for only $50. The question is what does it mean to own Reason-type software that has to verify the license either every time it's run in Reasson 11 or after a while in newer versions. If the company goes bankrupt or the servers go out for a long time, is there any guarantee that the SW will continue to work for us? I don't know about it. I understand remote verification, but from the perspective of owning something is tricky.

It’s now Black Friday weekend ‘24, and thanks to a sale, I upgraded from 11 to 13 for $119. For me. The big seller was FINALLY getting VST3 support (which was added in 12 at some point, but I missed the memo on that). My rule of thumb, much like with Komplete, is to just be patient. Sooner or later, all these companies will have a sale, so it’s just a matter of keeping an eye out, and if there’s a good sale price on the upgrade or an extension you like, go for it.

I think the point here is that many people have invested for years into the Reason ecosystem, buying Rack Extensions and version upgrades and feel like Reason Studios will eventually try to go subscription only, leaving those behind who are already invested. Also, the upgrade price of $199 (US) is way to steep for what they're offering, when it used to be $129 iirc. So, unless you've already accumulated a lot of extensions, the upgrade is not worth it at all. It does become cheaper however if you skip a version (or a few) and then upgrade. I'm still on 11 suite and will wait till v14 to upgrade (unless they offer a discount).

I just hate that they charge way too much now to upgrade the perpetual license, which I think psychologically, they are trying to get you to subscribe since that’s where the actual money is. It was $130 for the upgrades to perpetual license for years. Then all of a sudden they go from $130 all the way to $200. It’s not worth it. I could understand $150 but $200 is ridiculous. So like I did last time 12 is when they upped the price to $200 I will wait for a sale.

I'm so glad you say these things here. I've been so angry, and left comments everywhere. But you make the point better than i can. So many people i know are being forced to forget the hundreds (even thousands) of pounds that they have already poured into Reason, bite the bullet, and move over to the subscription model. Reason are acting so badly and not enough people are calling them out on it because we are used to having our consumer rights eroded. And what is the exchange rate like now? Because every number you say in (American) dollars is the same number they are charging us in British pounds. I know it's not a competition, but i feel like we are getting scammed even more than you are!

By the way, up to version 12 if you tried the subscription model for a month and downloaded all the sound packs, then yes you could still use those packs. But in the very short time i tried version 13 it looks like they are finding ways to obfuscate that. The new companion has some sneaky, controlling elements IMO, and i'm very glad i kept a back up of an older version. Because, in another effort at control, upgrading to version 13 companion looks like they want that to be a one way deal as well.

In my honest humble opinion... Reason+ is the only subscription model I use and actually enjoy. I think it's affordable and worth the money for what I get in return as a musician/producer. Compare it to an Adobe subscription for a single application and see the difference in returns. I really don't like subscription services overall, but at least you still have a choice with reason studios. I do think the single payment for reason 13 is too expensive, but every new product is expensive at the release and will probably lower in price eventually. Overall, I never felt that reason studios have been f***ing me over as a costumer and as a software company I praise they've stayed true to their concept while innovating and keeping up with the fast paced developments in the music industry. It's not always been perfect, but I never felt like I was missing out on something pivotal. I read a lot of comments and critiques, but my opinion with most of these is: there's so many other options out there, even free ones. Just choose something else, and stay respectful. And Jeff, I appreciate your content as always, well balanced and thought out❤

Why subscriptions? Everytime a new version of my DAW (Cubase) is released, I buy the upgrade, BUT I remain free to stop upgrading and can use the software for the rest of my life 'as is '. A subscription is a trap. If you no longer _subscribe_ you are no longer able to open projects made in the past ....

Problem with the subscription is that they don't release instruments or devices enough to justify it. When they released Reason 11 Suite back when, I bought it, and I bought Friktion and most of the other REs. I'm on Reason 12 now. So other than the instrument and the delay in Reason 13, the only thing I don't have is Objekt. I might buy Objekt. I'm gonna skip Reason 13 and catch up with it' when it's a more valuable offer. Reason+ only makes sense if you didn't buy perpetual licenses for years and don't have most of what they offer in the subscription.

When 12 was released i bought it, very happy, did everything i needed it to, and in a way that made life very easy. Saw the sub model, thought it was nice theyre trying to make the software more accessible for a modest cost. Saw the upgrade to 13, tested it, enjoyed it, but ultimately decided i didnt need it right away, that may change in the future, definitely didnt see it as overpriced given the amount of features and new rack extension's. It was very hard to turn down the new stereo tool, that thing is amazing. Didnt like the new browser, would like a legacy option.

There is a comparison page linked when you select "What do I get when I upgrade to Reason 13?" in the FAQ that lists what's included in Reason 6 to 12, Reason 13 and Reason+, but it's not VERY easy to find from the home page. My issue with the subscription is there is only one option. I think many more long-time users would consider subscribing if there was a cheaper option that includes everything except sound packs, which could be available separately allowing you to buy only whichever ones you want. The cost of the subscription, for the first time you subscribe at least, should also be discounted by various amounts based on which devices you have already paid for separately. In terms of what's new in 13, I think there's been too much emphasis on new devices in recent releases and not enough new or improved features. I'm still undecided about upgrading, though that's partly because I'm not making music full time. I've used Reason because I prefer its visual style to DAWs where everything looks exactly the same. But I don't enjoy editing in it. They really need to bring Reason up to par with other DAWs if they want to regain market share. It's a shame they're sticking so steadfastly (unreasonably?) to what many users say is a bad business model. And not offering the same 20pc off upgrades for a limited time gives a clear message to perpetual users just how much we mean to them.

The reality is: The moment you even mention anything that is even remotely "subscription" adjacent, there will be a certain subgroup of internet rage posters that will come out of the woodwork to just crap on any video that's out there. It happens. EVERY. TIME. Like, you can time a watch to it. No one is forcing anyone to sub up to a service. And it isn't shilling for creators to make sponsored content...the entire platform of KZbin is based on sponsored-content. There are adds literally everywhere. Posters who vice signal about sponsored content being "shilling" are naive to the ecosystem they are in.

I've got no problem with Jef's videos and bravo to him for his comped sub. Any anger toward him is misplaced. But there's a legit reason we're pissed about subs. It's because subs add up and in the end the company can yank the product out from under you anytime they want. Everything you've spent over the years is just gone. It's happened to me a couple of times. Between music and video streaming and various software subs (not Reason, I won't), I'm spending $150+ a month. I'm not rich but I have no choice if I want to enjoy what I enjoy. It's just greed. Every corporation is trying to squeeze as much as it can out of its customers and it's slimy.

Thanks for the vids Jef. My 2 cents on the whole thing, which to be fair I've not paid much attention to because I stopped caring about Reason a while ago. I've been a user/owner since version 2 till 11 and for me it's just not super relevant anymore. Yes there's lots of cool stuff there and all that but any company effectively forcing their customers to sign up for a "pay us monthly and own nothing" model is instantly invisible to me. Subscriptions just suck, nobody likes them, they only benefit the company and everyone knows why they are doing it and it feels dirty and greedy. Why destroy your brand forcing customers to do things they don't want to? Makes zero sense whatsoever. It's clear these companies don't give a damn about their customers and only care about boosting company valuation to make it an appealing sell. Fake!! I'm a Live and Bitwig user. I'm not a fan of the yearly update plan that Bitwig does but it's better than a standard subscription. If either of those DAWs move to sub only I'll just move to another DAW or go 100% DAWless again. I personally just won't do the sub thing ever, don't care how good the software is.

Jef, you're DEFINITELY not a shill. Thank you SO MUCH for all of the amazing work you've done for us. Reason Studios is heading dangerously close to the direction AVID/Protools went. They are behind in their offerings yet believe that they are somehow entitled to subscriptions while very vague regarding their languages on offerings. Reason Studios has always been a relatively cool solution. HOWEVER, I (and likely many others) are exhausted by having to parse through all of the "offerings" details, as though we are contracts attorneys who love to subject ourselves to punishing & exhaustive reading, to assure we aren't getting screwed over. If they don't want to provide us what is current when we purchase the perpetual license... then I refuse to buy it. Therefore, they'll get NO money from many of us... which they seem to disregard. Somehow so much focus is on repetitive payments, that they are blinding themselves toward 1x payments. And that's ok. They don't want my money... then I won't force them to take it. Thank again, for ALL you do for us.

I don’t think most people realize how little money there is to be made from KZbin videos for the vast majority of creators. If one would calculate it as an hourly wage, it would be minuscule. So without getting free stuff, many creators probably wouldn’t be able to afford to get the stuff they showcase or review. An added complexity is, when creators get a fully loaded deluxe version of a product, and often have to make their videos before the official release. So they may not have easy access to knowing what is not included in lesser versions. Or even what the final prices are. So KZbin creators/influencers as well as their viewers are a bit between a rock and a hard place in trying to figure out, if something is worth their money.

I need to start from scratch again after having owned Reason 4.5 many moons ago so i thought to myself, i'll wait untill the next big holiday sale and grab Reason 13 for 50% off at 250 euro's. I was under the impression that everything would be in that purchase except maybe some patches and stuff, i dont mind that. But whole devices not being in the retail paid version? What the hell even is that?! Shady business practice if you ask me, seriously reconcidering even getting back into music production again if this is the 'new normal' for a DAW.

I defended all the previous upgrade prices, even when at times I couldn't afford it. In 10, Grain and Europa were both easily $150 devices. I'm not seeing it here, and it matters more than ever now that some people don't need the DAW. Perhaps they should consider separate prices for DAW and Rack upgrades.

I'm tired of the subscription BS companies trying to push on users! Too many subscriptions and all are designed for a single purpose: to milk more money out of customers! Subscribers more often than not will forget to cancel subscriptions in time when they don't need them and that's one of the main takes of why companies convert to subscriptions! The whole charade with the devices you're not getting on a perpetually paid upgrade evaded my since I have these REs already but that looks like a very scummy way of getting users to switch to subscription! Shame on you RS!

I also don't respect what Reason Studio is doing, but who really needs the extra devices Reason+ offers? Most of you have third-party plug-ins, no? Feel like most of you will have Kontakt, Omnisphere, Serum, plug-ins by Valhalla and others, and then a bunch of libraries, etc. What are you missing by not having Reason+?

I don't want any of the things that come with R+ over perpetual*. Not a biggie. I do however stress about how Reason increasingly seems to be weighted toward a changing (and watered-down) mindset and may have already made a fatal misstep: Whilst the R13 update is mostly elegant, there is a problem now with usability when Piano-Rolling several tracks at once to work on Harmony. Before, changing what Tracks were in-view was slightly clunky but logical and worked. Now sadly while initially the selection is smooth, changing once in the Piano Roll is scruffy and commonly doesn't work well at all. It is easier to simply start again which is the opposite of "faster workflow". For the first time ever in 15+ years of using Reason exclusively, I am finding composing aggravating - like it was/is in every other DAW. Reason used to be the wonderful alternative to the other DAWs, now it seems to be trying to be one of them. This is reducing uniqueness (and usability). :-) *I own Algo and it is super

It's way overpriced as an upgrade. The browser has always been a mess so they should have fixed it for free ages ago. The Polytone and reverb are nice but this still doesn't make it worth it. They should by now throw in the Polystep Sequencer or some other goods. I really hate subscriptions, so thank goodness for Ableton 12, which runs circles around Reason. The consumer image of Reason is sinking fast. BTW..Love your videos!!

For people new to music production, subscriptions are probably the way to go. I started with rebirth and 1st reason and early cubase, subscriptions make no sense for me but I get it, I got enough music software really don't need to buy anymore and a lot of these companies are probably feeling the loss in sales especially plugin companies how many more eqs, compressors or soft synths can you buy, especially now most daws have decent stock plugins. People got to be running out of reason to buy and update. For the 1st time I'm probably gonna skip a reason update or two, possibly stop and same thing with my other bundles, cubase has always been my main daw anyways, wouldn't mind the new browser but for now ain't worth the money.

People are dumb. R13 is worth it if you can. Reason users are specifically annoying. (Sorry yall) Stayed Reason since 2001, so hear me out! I'm on board for now. It's amazing. I love it and I've been enjoying Dubler too. The only bit that bugs is their marketing and being treated like a new customer when already 2 years deep in the sub. It's the principal, lol. I'm not a fan of proactive negative statements, but it just felt a bit brown glove (sorry). Rplus gets pushed on me when I'm already subscribed, and that is not a good look imo. Especially if it's flaunting a better price and you can't jump on it. I get that onboarding is the golden goose, and we need new unique users... But don't forget to kiss the O.G. crew before heading out to pull subs in the Basics district. I will always let Reason get away with more because.. Brand loyalty. I can'texplain beyond that. I swear if they just sent us stickers we'd stfu. I dig the packs but I'd rather feel a bit more of that good old fashioned appreciation. I hate subs too... but hate won't shake my caboose and yea... sorry, rant. Expensive hobby for sure. Tell ya what, I feel too old to use warez, but ai is bringing new flesh to the daw dev scene I'm always a new tab or two away from Reaper/Renoise/Anything opensource. We need a reward that feels like a win. Maybe that's a live stream from Ryan... But Id rather see Rent To Own. I need to at least feel like I'm winning. Good vid. Caughtmeoff guard. Sick tunes, most importantly. . KAPSIZE, SIGN HIM ❤ obligatory "sorry for handwriting to text grammar" statement.

I am using Reason 10 and honestly do not care about all the upgrades. For drums KONG is more than enough. For anything else Subtractor synth is still the GOAT, and GRAIN is amazing for experimental stuff. MClass effects are great as all reason effects. Reason is great for vocal fix, and it is way efficient than any other soft like Melodyne or FL Studio... It's simple, easy to use and stable. What reason is missing - good noise reduction plugin, good dynamic EQ like TDR Nova. I tested Reason 13 and for me there is too much of everything, so if there was essential version with only a few instruments, it would be great. The price is a joke for a full version and for subscription. Subscription is great for my students, who can easily download and learn the software, but it should be 10eur max.

Reason is the only DAW I have a subscription with and my god I wish I had this with the others I use. Software has got to be the most valueless thing you can buy, as soon as you own it it’s worth nothing. Ibe got the newest stuff always, all the time, it never costs me a cent more than what they tell me it will. I think I figured out i could run reason on my subscription for 30 years before I would reach the same amount Cubase has cost me. Of which there are still things I don’t have inside of it.

I don't have a problem with companies that want to use a subscription model, you can choose to use it or not. However I have a huge problem with the way Reason Studios treats it's customers specifically the perpetual license owners that bought reason, owned a license and invested huge sums into the Reason Eco system (i.e. Rack Extensions) only to be shat on as soon as the company decided they wanted to go to a subscription model. Not only that their support is terrible, they treat you like a criminal despite spending thousands of dollars legitimately on their products. Reason Studios is a huge no from me, I owned Reason from version 1 through to 11 and every iteration in between and bought hundreds of RE, then get treated like shit when it came time for license upgrades all because I didn't want to go to their subscription model. They can get in the bin. There are plenty of decent DAW's out there where the company doesn't treat you like crap.

I did buy Reason 12 and yep I just bought the chord sequencer. Very underwhelmed by the fact that to have something that I feel is worth it I have to forget that I've already paid out a large sum of money and go subscription to basically buy it again plus some other stuff. I can't believe they don't do some sort of crossgrade from perpetual to subscription. no way I'm going to buy any more rack stuff as I know they are going to stitch me with less and less each upgrade. I wish Robotic Bean would release Step Sequencer for vsti format.

Reason Studios decided to break Reason 11 and earlier by disabling offline authorization, thus requiring an active Internet connection every time you open the DAW, and they did this long after the point of purchase -- "As of September 25, 2023, offline authorization for Reason 11 and earlier has been deprecated. The system of offline authorization in use was based on technology that had simply passed its due date. In order to create a better system of offline authorization, we needed to remove reliances on legacy components that might otherwise hold us back." This alone is reason not to trust the company anymore, and thus reason not to purchase anything of theirs anymore (and it almost surely violates consumer protection laws as well).

I upgraded Cubase Pro for 1/3 and they also gave extra free 3rd party plugins on top of it. As a rack user $200 is a bad joke. R15 maybe, if it is still possible to buy, but that will not be until 2027!? Good Lord, Reason really push the R+ so hard we all gonna leave... For new buyers it is $500, but then the most interesting devices are not included, so it will be $1000 to get it. Yeah, that is way off in today's market... And nothing for years of loyalty, just R+...

I was one of those who spoke rather scathingly about Reasons. That's against Reasons, not Jeff. I've been a fan of this channel for more than a year and don't see that changing. I'm just of the mindset that if I pay for something, provided I comply with all of the licensing rules about number of activations....actually activating (as some....don't). I want to pay and go. If I choose to interact with the company again for any reason, that's to be seen. But I don't like the fact that in my Reasons 11, I've purchased plugins from them that I can't get access to unless I log into their servers. This is plug-ins that I purchased outside of a subscription. I still have to log in. If I don't, I can't use it. Access to those plug-ins is deactivated. There used to be a authentication software that used to authenticate your reasons without it being connected to the internet. They took that out as well. That's a big no no for me. Again, love the channel Jeff and no issues with you at all brother. But Reasons is a done deal for me. I have it on two of my computers and won't use it.

In 2022 I bought Reason+ for a year for $99 on their black Friday sale. My goal was to subscribe to Reason + for a year and see if I wanted to buy it because subscribing to a DAW is not acceptable for me as you have to maintain a subscription to open your old projects even if you decide to switch to another daw in the future. And when I saw everything that wasn’t part of Reason 12 and had to be bought separately I stopped using it because $500 for the base software plus all the extras I wanted would have cost me almost $900. And even at that price you don’t have everything you have on Reason +. This makes Reason way too expensive for what it is if you choose the perpetual license. The same things go for plugin subscriptions, I don’t like it. The only subscription I have is for samples libraries because if you unsubscribe, you still have access to the samples you downloaded, you don’t have to maintain a valid subscription to open your old projects. A subscription for a DAW is moronic IMO because all your music is in a format that requires a subscription for you to have access to. With plugins, you can still open your project and with a little work you can replace the plugins you no longer have access to. But with the daw itself you are fucked if you want to unsubscribe.

I paid for a year of Reason Plus. As soon as you cancel, you lose access to all of the combinators that you download through the subscription. You also can’t open songs that you made with the latest version of reason with your older version. So you pay for a year but then get nothing in return. It would be better if they let you keep the sound packs or if they had some type of rent to own model that credits you towards the full license.
