@bloodswarms7 ай бұрын
@@jefgibbons Standard price for Cubase Upgrade in the US is $99 USD, but I got version 13 on sale for $69 USD. I stopped using Reason as a DAW when I bought Cubase 11. I only use Reason as a VST plugin now inside of Cubase. I originally bought Cubase because Reason Studios was so far behind it was painful to use compared to any other DAW (sad truth). From the perspective of a Reason Rack plugin user, with the 13 upgrade I'd get dark mode, a single synth and a space echo type delay for $199 USD. The value proposition is upside down at that point. Conversely, when I buy a *Cubase upgrade*, I get a *massive value* at a lower cost. Stark reality. I started with Reason 8.5. I bought upgrades for 9, 10, the 11 Suite version they did, and then 12. I've also bought a bunch of Rack extensions from Reason Studios. All told, I'm probably $1,500 deep all things considered. Maybe more. I've been good to them, I'd say. Because of the aforementioned value proposition deficit, I'm practically *incentivized* to skip this version to get more out of the next. There's everything to gain and nothing to lose. So, I won't be buying the Reason 13 upgrade unless they do a mid-cycle update that brings something really compelling to the table. If mid-cycle they drop a 13.5 update with native Windows ARM support, I'd buy the upgrade so that, so I could use it with one of the new multi-day battery life laptops that are about to hit the market. *Cubase* is *already* developing native Windows ARM support. With how long it took Reason Studios to provide Native Apple silicon, I would bet they'll take forever to meet my needs with this. Actually, if I were a betting man, I'd put my money on Reason Studios not doing a mid-cycle update at all. I don't envy their position. They can't fork Reason in two and sell the Rack plugin separately for a lower cost, because no one would buy it *just* for the DAW. Any time they update the DAW, those of us that moved onto greener pastures don't care a thing about it and only want more Instruments and effects. At the same time, anyone who uses it as a DAW beg for workflow improvements and feel raw about it when they're ignored. Reason Studios is not in a great position because they obviously don't have the resources to satisfy everyone. It feels like Reason Studios is always on the back foot, always catching up, never pulling ahead. It's sad, because I started my journey with music with ReBirth back in the day. fin

But since DAWs like FL Studio have a "pay once" to obtain a lifetime license and I Logic is $199.99, they seem to be better options price wise. I've been a Reason user since version 2.5, but I stopped at version 11. I love the CV and audio routing capabilities offered by the DAW version (which can't be done when using it as a VST Rack). However, I haven't upgraded to version 12 and I'm unsure about upgrading to version 13 (regardless of the price) because in 2024 it's not possible to have such an archaic MIDI management. Direct routing from the MIDI out of VSTs like InstaComposer or Scaler to the MIDI in of VST or Rack Extension synths isn't possible. Nowadays, the market for MIDI generators is rich (thanks in part to artificial intelligence), and Reason Studio's are preventing their users from accessing all those delights. Not to mention MPE management. I've had a couple of MPE devices for 4 years and there's no way to use them to their full potential when working in Reason.

In comparison to that, a chord generator (do artists not feel insulted by the deeply personal music-writing process being replaced with a "generator"?), a Splice clone sample subscription service (FL Cloud), a preset machine that _locks you out_ of the internal controls (FLEX), _redundant_ substractive synths (Kepler does not bring much to the table if you already have Sawer, GMS, Wasp, Wasp XT, Simsynth, Poizone, 3xOSC etc and a chorus plugin you feel me?), slapping a _free_ AI model onto a menu... don't seem like compelling updates to me. On paper it seems like a good DAW. In fact, it is a different story. In 2024, having to connect cables and more cables is already more of a hassle than a solution. There are other DAWs that make life easier, and get straight to the point. We want to compose, and not have to deal with miles of cables and this 2005 way of working. It's still a toy. More cumbersome every time, yes.
@_P_M_7 ай бұрын
When is the last time you used Reason? I almost never touch the cabling, they connect automatically. It's as fast as any DAW. The difference is IF you want to get under the hood, the workflow is like the analog gear many of us are already used to using.
@marcelochagra33077 ай бұрын
@@_P_M_ That is precisely his problem. It's a niche DAW in your words. How many people in 2024 opt for analog vs. the ease of computing? The number of people who would choose that way of working is anecdotal.
@_P_M_7 ай бұрын
@@marcelochagra3307 How is that a problem? Reason has always used the virtual rack concept. Many people prefer that style of analog routing. If you don't then you should use something else. There are many options out there. Something for everyone.

As a Reason 11 Suite owner, 13 has NOTHING I need or want for upgrade price, If they included their instruments, Complex-1, Algorithm, Objekt & Friktion, BV-X & their players, I'd be tempted maybe, Reason Suite should be brought back for the price of the current reason perpetual license & upgrades, the non suite version should be the former pricing. Suite should include ALL the ReasonStudios/Propellerhead rack extensions with all new rack extensions added to the next reason suite release. With that structure I'd buy every release knowing I'm getting good value somewhat, but at present 12 and 13 have been terrible value. the Included Rack Extensions are low effort and boring IMO. I don't do subscriptions like MANY users and never will because the idea of having nothing for your money spent the moment you decide to stop spending is not something that can ever be rationally justified to me. I can wait 5 releases until the value proposition makes sense to upgrade.

I upgraded to 12 from 9.5 during the Black Friday sale for $100, and I'll likely do the same for 13. Upgrade prices used to be $125. I honestly think the price hikes were to push the value of the subscription model. I love Reason but it pisses me off that they treat subscribers better than those of us who bought their software.

Very small update actually, that completely ruins the browser. No one wants a floating browser that obscures the project/rack/mixer/plugin in 2024 just because it has tagging. NO other DAW is without a docked browser, only Reason does this now. You think that's a GOOD thing? All the others seem to do tagging easily within a docked browser. That's all they needed to do, update it and not take the docking option away. It's a complete deal breaker indeed, stopping my Reason+ immediately.

My biggest gripe with Reason Studios is not just the upgrade price, or the fact that they removed the favorites for devices.. ..it’s the fact that they never upgrade the devices that are already in the software. I guess this goes against the business model of offering substantial improvements that most users would appreciate. Instead, we get a shiny new something or another’ that is similar to devices that are already in the RE shop. The epitome of quantity over quality
@HOLLASOUNDS7 ай бұрын
They did update all devices that use samples and made them able to record dirrectly into them. I would to see some of the devices get an update same as Dr Rex did but part of Reasons charm is the fact that there ikd devices are like real hardware and dont change.
@coldskoolbeatz7 ай бұрын
@@HOLLASOUNDS Real hardware devices get upgrades all the time. That's why we have so many different versions of the SSL, Neve Console, 1176, etc. Personally, I'd love to see Thor NN-XT/19 and Kong get an upgrade. Reasons time stretch Algo is pretty dope. Wish they'd incorporate that into those samplers.

@@coldskoolbeatz Well I'm only talking about the old Reason devices because the new devices often dont follow the realistic Rack devices in the way they look and function. They either have multiple faces that switch with buttons like Polytone or they simply look nothing like a rack device like Objekt. Looks like they gave up on the realistical hardware style devices long ago as was to restrictive.

This is a common complaint with NI as well, lots of new instruments but few updates on things like Battery, Massive X, and Maschine. I'd love to know just how close these companies are from not making ends meet... It might shed light on upgrade prices that are too high, lack of essential updates, and subscription prioritizing... everyone has to eat I guess...

@@johnisrael5183 They only gave you a new browser and devices. The tool bar was already there they just moved it down. Gain, side chain, and stereo tool already there just turn them into devices. No MPE, ARA, stem separation, midi routing, strum, editing midi features, piano lock to scale feature, and mastering audio. For 200 I can get all that and more in any other DAW 😂 but too each it’s own.
