I would never mess with gear oil without gloves if I could avoid it, hahaha. Hate having that smell stuck on me for days. Awesome install video and holy crap I'm sorry about your engine. That was def a bit of an ugly death. Very sudden failure makes me think rod bolt related. Excited to see what you decide to do with the truck or whatever project you work on next. JEGS should definitely help you out with an engine given what you've done for them.

That sucks. On the up side, I have always planned on an 8.8 in my S10...but I may go with a mini spool for a while once it's running. Your video made it look pretty easy! Maybe start a Gofundme? I'd throw you a few bucks.

Bad thing about 400s😢 you need to port and polish the heads and block for more oil flow. They’ve always been bad for that. If you fix that then they are amazing power plants

Take this for what it's worth... I seem to remember that the Chevy small blocks, specifically the 400ci, suffers from oil starvation at high rpms. Something to do with the heads not allowing the oil to drain back into the pan cause of the small drain holes. I think you'd be better off getting a junkyard 5.3l LS and get a carb manifold for it. Much more reliable.

I believe you're correct ab the sbc. Just watched street racing channel ro a build up on a sbc for a drag/street car. Their engine builder used an etch and marked the lifters on one side of them top to bottom to help oil flow past them. I believe they also used aftermarket heads so oil passages may be bigger or was machined to be bigger. Maybe bigger oil pan and more oil? I know these small trucks make it hard to get that option, though usually have to put the smallest pan yu can get for the engine to make it fit. Pretty sure their racecars on street racing channel has 11 quart oil pans or something crazy.

in the v8 plow truck motors iv built if you put a big rv cam in it and torqes up the motor a bunch you have to compansate in the distributer caused the stock ones advance to quickly and not enough on the top end follow?

i diddnt get a good look at your distributer in rat 10 but i know that there is an hei verson for a 4cyl and you can mess with the timing curve with weights and springs.

Maybe throw a 4.8 ls or something in it with a carb intake and the fuel injection kit you have. It's not an old school v8 but it's cheap power lol

Well if you don't want to blow it up again low the rev limiter on the fuel injection system. It's a big ish block pic power is at 5000 rpm or lower than that don't know if you put big valve springs or bigger cam but 5000 rpm or lower than that

It is a wonder the neighbors didn't call 911 to report a house fire. Are you running a NV3500? if so do you like it, does it shift good from 1st to 2nd? I used to have a 4X4 350 blazer and you would loose all your momentum while shift from 1 to 2...

I used to have a 96 s10 with the NV3500 now I drive a 94 with the T5, NV3500 has better shifting IMO and floats easier.

if you still have an old cutlass v8 that was in your pharmy, reinstall the old cutlass v8 until you get another 400.

Awe man, looking like when it rains it pours over there, so sorry it let loose on you. If you didn't break the block you can fix it. Even if you blew a hole in the side if the block as long as it isn't in the coolant you can still fix it by sealing the hole. Some JB weld a piece of sheet metal and a few 1/4-20 bolts and brand new used. That's the bad part about doing burnouts with a manual, pretty much stuck in the gear you're in without a line lock. Stock sbc 400s don't like to rev like sbc 283s, 302s and 327s, not even as much as 350s. But none of those others have to low end that those 400s had.

I was wondering the same thing. The mini spool from Jegs recommended getting a specific cross pin (which I got), but the cross pin didn't fit in the carrier. I just used the stock pin and I know have excessive in/out play with the axles

I bought a bunch of parts to try and redneck ingenuity this thing together, in the process try one more time to force the new pin in.
