Jehovah's Witnesses are ashamed of these shunning videos

(Rebuttals Sushi no. 614 - Reviewing the 2023 "Exercise Patience!" convention of Jehovah's Witnesses - Sunday AM) I revisit a talk from the Saturday of this year's "Exercise Patience" Jehovah's Witness convention from which two videos promoting shunning were removed.
As announced on September 15, 2023, this channel is dramatically reducing the number of uploads meaning there will be no further pre-recorded long-form rebuttals or "sushis" (segments from my rebuttals released as standalone videos). This video is one of four sushis from the beginning of my rebuttal to the Sunday morning session of the "Exercise Patience" convention, the filming of which was never completed.

But, If the person is Toxic or Unhealthy for you to be around, you have to do what is best for yourself. Most JWs are Self absorbed Narcissists that lack Empathy and are Incapable of Self Reflection About Their Actions and Thoughts. To reject a Family Member for Selfish reasons or invalid concepts, that is 100% Wrong to do. For me personally watching this unfold with my friend in this position n the JUDGMENT the family place on him (they know he's inactive), with WHY weren't u at the meeting, pull your socks up n start doing better. I didn't see u at the assembly. I say that to u bc the family u crave sadly r gone. I realize y have no intention of going back....but this is what the reality is. I also WHY I say now, so much crape from judgemental witnesses who thought it was their business to poke their noses in my business about why they never saw me at field service grp n out witnessing. I'd politely ans them. One older man even claimed to be part of the 144,000. The other younger man got disfellowshipped but came back. I often wondered why I felt like a stranger in the kingdom hall n that the sisters didn't really like me. I was super friendly n had a life outside the hall with friends. I actually "took notes", mental ones of how to informal witness n had a few bible studies n a good no of return visits with people I met in the park when I went walking with my dog. Trackies n no need to dress up n HONESTLY be amongst a group of whingers n gossipers. U r doing fine. U have come this far without your family. I honestly say to u, u dont need them. They made their choice n they have to live with the daily conquences of their decision n if they think God (for those u believe in God....not sure if u do anymore n I understand if not). But THEY claim to be Gods chosen people. N if they think God is proud of them bc a religion/cult DICTATES to them to do this to their family n friends, they should be ashamed of themselves. Why do they think so almighty of themselves that at Armageddon (jw teaching) they get life but u get destruction. My thinking now is if any part of this crazy teaching is true.....rem I've been indocrinated also n am still deprogramming myself....maybe Gods righteous honest hearted ones going to the other side won't include many of them. Part of the reason i was so conflicted growing up is that my dad was disfellowshipped right before I was born and so I grew up knowing that if I officially became a witness, I would have lost my father and no matter our problems, i couldn't pretend to love a god I was taught allows the destruction of peoples lives, more than i love my father.

I agree with your assessment, I am leaning more towards it being a legal issue, with not wanting to give ammunition to certain governments who are claiming human rights violations. Because some Governing Body members and the org lawyers have claimed under oath that they do not interfere with "family" relationships, saying they only stop spiritual associations with close family members. My guess is that they cut these videos because of the legal ramifications during the case going on in Spain. The Watchtower's lawyers lied in court, and brought over 20 individual rank-and-file JWs to testify that they do not teach, either in their literature or on video, that members must shun those who are disfellowshipped.

This has been happening for decades. I left when I was 17 and I'm now 50 and my mother could talk to me as long as it was something important( like asking me to give her a ride when no brothers or sisters were available and not talking to me the whole time) but not socialize. When I got pregnant with my daughter, then she could talk and socialize with them then that changed and then she stopped talking to me all together, and then eventually to my girls...which traumatized them. It's just makes me sick!!! When it benefits them it's OK but Lloyd's right if it's supposed to be jehovahs command, then be consistent

Even though I am not a Jehovah's Witness...I myself, feel that shunning is the most DANGEROUS behaviour that one person can do to another. Have these J W's not learned how to forgive the apostates and other others who have been shunned. I am beginning to wonder if the JW's know if their God's law is the right law. Suggest to read the Jan 1947 Awake article called "are you ex-communicated" and see what then was "truth coming from Jehovah" and within a few yrs, that same "truth" ( that shunning was not a practice found in scripture) was discarded and became "un-truth" and morphed into what it is today. JW leadership have no interest in what mental anguish such practices create because it is a very good tool to control people and create the illusion that everyone is "happy and loving"... because the consequences otherwise are quite extreme.

Hi My name is Nissim and I am from Israel. I lived in Bethel for more then 20 years. In Israel Bethel they strugle to stay legal and to get some recognition so they would not pay taxes. For that, they (i was doing it after told to do it) changed the assembly/conventions program - so instead of Baptizm Talk we did Dedication talk - because they didnt want to show they were baptizing people. Or tey would ask to remove videos of kids being preached because its ilegal in Israel to try change a minors faith without their parents aproved it. So yes, in many cases they changed texts and videos for their benefit

I remember a sister, wife of an elder whose son left. She, as a mother and a very loving person, was devastated. She admitted to my Mom that she had seen her son and visited with him. My Mom never said a word to anyone but me about it until after we left the religion. It was sad to watch her change. She just shut down. She died not too long after that and I always thought she died of a broken heart. Not to mention our own story with shunning. But, the emotional toll it takes on people. As a mother myself, this is so heartbreaking. To think my children would shun me hurts my heart in the deepest way. But even worse, a mother shunning her own child. Yes, both my JW children are shunning me, and I'm their mother. It hurts so much, I must have cried a thousand tears, and now I have a 9 mth old grandchild as well whom I'm forbidden to have any contact with. @user-vo4wc2jz8g, Unfortunately, that passage from the "AWAKE!" magazine only applies to JWs who are being forced to participate in acts of non-JW religious worship and who are then forced to choose between having a relationship with their non-Witness family or maintaining their unquestioning obedience and allegiance to the Watchtower Society's teachings. Many converts to the Jehovah's Witness faith do permanently cut off all contact with their non-Witness family and friends because they view them as "bad association" simply for not sharing their religious beliefs and for probably not wanting to become JWs themselves. Witnesses are forced to choose between having a relationship with their ex-JW loved ones and maintaining their membership status within the JW community. Ex-JWs also are forced to choose between continuing in their apostasy and having a relationship with their JW family members and friends. So, Witnesses and ex-Witnesses definitely are forced into worship in a way that they may no longer want to worship and are forced to choose between obeying the dictates of their current or former faith and maintaining a relationship with their loved one who still choose to remain part of the faith or who have been forced out of or who chose to leave the faith.

I remember when I was a kid I recall that my pastor would sometimes bash the other religions like Buddhism, Hinduism, etc. When I was older, I studied a bit on the Eastern religions and wondered why would they be considered bad? I even studied the different denominations of Christianity and I am amazed at how the different denominations bash each other!

They should make a sequel in which her mom tries to get reinstated but is unable to persuade the elders that her motives are pure. In a judicial hearing she cracks, bursts into pitiful sobs, and confesses that she doesn't believe in Jehovah and only wants to see her daughter again. The two elders shake their heads as she begins cursing God and trashing the KH library and has to be dragged out by police. The next morning the protagonist learns that her mother was found deceased in her jail cell, apparently having died from a broken heart. The last scene is of her daughter mentally committing to double down on her commitment to Jehovah: "I could get depressed over my mother's tragic end, but instead I choose to learn from it. The only thing awaiting apostates outside of Jehovah's clean organization is misery, loneliness, and suicide. Showing me that was perhaps my beloved mom's final unwitting gift to me." In my view the timing explains all. Morris said, commenting the Norway case "we will never adjust our shunning policy". Soon he was removed. To have a needed voting power, 2 more members were added, so they could overvote him and the GB members on this side. Then the 2 vids describing the shunning in its real nakedness was removed from global convention. Yes, in no country it was part of the physical convention. Clearly on the recommendation of the law dept. these changes were made to increase chances to get back the Norway registration and block possible spreading of the Norway precedes over European Union and WW.

Covered in a previous video of Lloyd's there was a huge chasm/fracture within the organization's governing body concerning a very prominent figure Ray Franz, an extremely humble, nice gentleman and very scholarly who was a member of the governing body. I think it was in the 70s that Ray had some differences in doctrine. His brother Fred Franz another very prominent figure at that time severed his relations with his brother and they labeled Ray an apostate. Major fraternal shunning there. Big changes occurred within the policies and direction of the org. Much of this concerned the way that the org handled the Mexican brothers vs the way they handled the Malawi brothers in Africa regarding the stance they dictated quite differently about the conscription into the military aka the neutral stance of non combatants or out right refusal of any participation in the military issue. Some were imprisoned in one country and not the other due to the way that the GB directed each one. It was so much a contradiction that Ray called them out on this and there is much more. Ray wrote a book about it called Crises of Conscience. Lloyd covered this in detail on an earlier video which was fascinating. Many will argue that the org then took a turn for the worse. This org is quite different from the one it was previous to this.

Any "religion" that does this to their believers/sheeple/people should be banned everywhere. These young people would be more balanced if they completely walked away from the JW organization and never looked back but it is like they put a worm in one's brain (their way the only way) and it is slowly eats away in them to cause chaos, depression, suicide and isolation. I was there. I only saw the video where the parents shunned their daughter. I was still fast asleep back then. But even then, I was deeply horrified at that video. I was so embarrassed. We invited thousands of people in our territory to come hear homophobic talks and shunning videos. Even though I hadn't woken up yet, I was deeply upset with this last convention. The brothers seemed to double down on their horrific policies

If your mother avoided talking to your wife very often for 20 years because she thought your wife was some sort of witch -- then what I would have done, if I had been in your wife's situation, is I probably would have placed some sort of supernatural curse on your mother with my magic powers by appealing to the goddesses and gods of pre-Abrahamic religion asking for permission to bestow a curse upon the woman as punishment. Shame and more shame on this organisation and some of their absolutely non-biblical stance on certain subjects. Shunning is not mentioned in any version of the Bible. Whichever person/s got this one off the ground and kept it there for donkeys years. In their hearts there are probably a great deal of JW currently who abhor this practice. Some may go along with it but others may find it out of order and out of fear keep quiet.

I’m trying to recall those Bible passages recording the times when Jesus shunned? No parables come to mind Like, Jesus wanted some alone time away from his followers, to have a retreat/ holiday, and on one occasion climbed a mountain to get away from all the needy people. But that’s not really “shunning”, that’s taking a break, as he got straight back into his work once he descended the mountain In an anthropological perspective, perhaps the practice of shunning is a very old practice arising from certain superstitious communities where early Christianity wasn’t originally practised, that travelled through time as a hierarchical tool used to distinguish social classes. It was all about bigoted self-preservation, not really about mediation. A social construct that travelled through the Puritan pilgrim times of the early Americans through to the draconian American JW religion. So, the concept of shunning shows self-righteous haughtiness, and an impatient immature, inability to effectively communicate. It’s pretty much an archaic/ different politic to eg todays progressive global neighbourhood socialist society dynamic

Rebeca Vardy is a well known person in the UK and she was raised a witness. She spoke of the shunning and in the doc, there was a statement from the org that this did not happen. The videos refuted this directly and therefore, I agree with others, that they realised their own propaganda showed them up for the liars they are.

@janespitfire9884, Well, shunning is not a doctrine that is promoted in the LDS Church, but it does happen as an informal practice within Mormon culture. Shunning apostates is definitely a practice that is official endorsed by the Amish. The Amish practice of shunning can even affect a disobedient member's business affairs, and they only have an education that goes up to the 8th Grade, or they did. Has that changed, I don't know. Amish folk live in an even more isolated environment than the Witnesses. The Amish reject so many modern conveniences, but some do practice Rumspringa where young Amish folk can leave their religious community for a year to decide if they want to pursue a life in the English/non-Amish world or get baptized as a formal member of the Amish denomination. Kids raised in the LDS Church from birth or from a very young age are encouraged to get baptized at 8-years-old because they have now reached the age of accountability for their "sins" according to the Church. Children raised as Jehovah's Witness are pressured into joining the Witness denomination as soon as possible and they aren't allowed to look at any alternative spiritual or non-religious paths. They can be shunned even if they have never been baptized as a formal member of the JW Organization -- especially if they never have any intention of doing so. Being an ex-JW and an ex-Mormon, I definitely know how those denominations treat former and dissident members. I'd like to see the JWs stop practicing the ritual of shunning, but I'm not going to hold my breath for that to happen any time soon.
