A very compelling argument and interesting perspective on something that affects the lives of millions. I could tell my mother (who was an elder's wife) never felt completely comfortable shunning disfellowshiped ones who would attend meetings and were trying to work their way back into the organization. I would take her cue and give them an encouraging smile when I happened to see them. To let them know we admired their courage. I also remember the appreciative smiles I received back from them in return. What courage it must take for an individual who feels shamed by their conduct to actually step foot into a KH where they know they will be treated as non-existent as if they were dead. It takes a very strong person to do it. I say kudos to anyone who had the fortitude to claw their way back. I felt nothing but compassion for them. Thank you for your riveting presentation, Eric, and it's wonderful to see you looking so very well.

I was one of those people. I got reinstated because my grandmother was up in age and I knew I wouldn’t be allowed at her funeral if I was still disfellowshipped nonetheless three years after that, she did pass away . so I was glad that I was reinstated for that reason. But I continue to be inactive, many years later till this day.
@dissidentfairy42643 жыл бұрын
I'm sorry about your grandmother. I was under the impression that a disfellowshipped person could attend a funeral. In the British film Apostasy that was playing on Amazon the disfellowshipped girl was able to attend her sister's funeral. She didn't receive any sympathy or compassion (at least not in the film) but she was able to attend. Maybe someone in the know can clarify the organization's position on it.
@MorenaNative3 жыл бұрын
@@dissidentfairy4264 thank you. Let me* clarify. I probably could have attended but my family are witnesses and I definitely wouldn’t of been able to have any interaction with them, even in sorrow. They would just pretend I wasn’t there.
@dissidentfairy42643 жыл бұрын
There's something that feels so wrong about family shunning family. I feel for you on that. It's one thing if they feel the need to shun someone in a spiritual environment inside the congregation if that's what they feel they need to do. It's quite another to impose restrictions on families. There are so many reasons why the disfellowshiped one may need the emotional, physical, and financial support of the people closest to them. The way I see it the announcement of a person being disfellowshipped is humiliating enough, and as long as they are sincerely trying to work their way back why penalize them any further? (Maybe they could restrict socialization for an allotted period of time, things such as parties, picnics, etc.). It seems like that would be enough unless of course, the disfellowshiped one has ulterior motives and is trying to be subversive and deliberately corrupt others in the congregation in some way.
@dissidentfairy42643 жыл бұрын
After giving more thought to it I'd like to add a caveat to my reply. What I proposed would not work for child molesters they should be turned in to authorities. Also, when I said the disfellowshiped one might need emotional, physical, and financial support from family it can go both ways. What if an elderly widow with a limited income relied on her son to care for her? If he's newly disfellowshipped and lives on his own then what? His mother would be penalized too. She would not only lose their close bond as mother and son but maybe his help on all the same levels mentioned above.

The world needs people like you who keep warning and exposing the cult. Although I am not religious any more, I appreciate very much what you do. Especially your videos visiting that judicial meetings are of immense worth and real eye openers concerning the brainwashing that is going on in the cult of the JWs. What a superhuman courage you showed, I could never do that. Your work is so precious, so much more than people who don't know the JWs would ever understand. If it is of any worth, I want to thank you from my heart what you do. I wish that no person would ever fall into the traps of that cult.

No. It isn’t. It’s comparing things that are not alike in any way whatsoever according to the law. Apples to oranges. Logical fallacy. I sympathize with the sentiment, but he’s wrong. The government and religious “law’” are separated intentionally by the constitution.
@tucsonan3 жыл бұрын
I’m a former JW and I sympathize with the intent, but he’s not understanding the law. There is a huge difference between private organizations and the government. That’s why KZbin or Facebook can censor your content but the government can’t. The first amendment limits the government exercising any kind of censorship. It does not limit what private firms may do to individuals or what individuals may do to one another in terms of choosing to associate with another (or not). And private clubs, religions, and (non governmental) organizations can place whatever parameters they wish upon membership and reasons for exclusion or banishment. You choose to be a witness or not. Just as your JW family chooses whether or not to shun you. In short, a trial by Jehovah’s Witnesses is not a real trial. It is not sanctioned by the government. It only has the authority afforded it by those who “believe” in it. It has no real authority and no connection whatsoever to constitutional law. The witnesses court is not a real court. That’s a huge thing your overlooking. It has nothing to do with real laws. The separation of church and state prevents religious laws from existing in governmental practice but not from existing within religions themselves.

Hey Pickets! Great video. You've outlined the unjust and oppressive structure of the JW organization very well. But what concerns me is the unlikelihood of a YOUNG person to ever reject it prior to baptism. I'd love to see you do a video on the kind of environment that witness children are actually brought up in. In my case, I was born into the organization and baptized at age 13 (just the right age to make binding lifelong commitments) Prior to my baptism I did lots of research, asked lots of questions about my beliefs, and even went to another church one time in defiance of my parents and elders. I tried to be fair and unbiased. I tried to be critical and objective. But still, I wasn't able to see the organization for what it was. I felt it NECESSARY to gain outside perspective before pushing on towards my own baptism! But this is a sensitive matter for witness kids and is so frowned on by the watchtower. They make such a decision to appear unnecessary if not outright dangerous. (They give the analogy that a banker need not memorize every type of counterfeit dollar bill; he only needs to understand the legitimate bills to avoid being tricked by any false bill.) The organization comes off as if it's protecting you and shielding you from the world so you aren't taken in by it's lies and it's so easy to believe that claim! They make you fearful of the spirit of the world, possibly lurking in academia, the internet, your classmates or even history books. If I didn't just stick with what the society wrote for the most part then I'd risk being led astray or invoking the judgement of my family and mentors. This never sat well with me. Even at the age of 11 I had the intuition to see that I WAS ONLY BEING GIVEN THE WATCHTOWERS SIDE OF THINGS. Eventually, the questions and doubts I had in my own heart would help me to see the truth later. Still, I got baptized at age 13 because I came to trust that I was being groomed for a great work! The organization portrays itself in videos as if it's made up of truly loving and saintly god-fearing individuals. My young eyes saw the miraculous global scope of the organization and the zeal of its missionaries! Some aspects of the work appeared to me as irrefutable proof of their divine blessing. Things like their global preaching work, their racial and ethnic harmony, their religious and doctrinal unity, and their neutrality in political areas. I became thoroughly convinced, (indoctrinated), that it was the truth because of these ideas the organization fed me. And that's kind of my point. Sadly, few witness children have any chance of knowing the reality of their situation as long as they're living under their parents roof. They can't look outside the organization for answers out of fear of punishment. They can't question the answers given to them by the watchtower for fear of being marked as a rebellious trouble maker (the JWs do a GREAT job at demonizing disobedient kids....ehem Caleb and Sofia). And if they're baptized, they now want to avoid being humiliated and shunned. The turmoil and chaos that occurred between my family other JWs got me disfellowshipped twice as a young man (barely out of high school). I've only just now discovered that both of my cases were incorrectly decided according the shepherd the flock of god book (which I was never allowed to read or defend myself with). I never want any child to go through what I endured. I nearly didn't make it out alive. I'm finally PIMO. It's taken me 17 years to come to the real truth of the organization and all of the lies and hidden policies their work is built on. And I have a life I need to rebuild because of them. Edit: It seems illegal to me to disfellowship a MINOR for any reason at all. All of this fear surrounding banishment would create a conflict of interests with a child's basic human rights in certain situations like having good adequate health care (blood transfusions, or treatment for chronic conditions that they might put off believing that the new system is around the corner) and in getting secular education while they're still young. Pickets, I'd really appreciate your coverage on this topic as I'm sure it goes farther than what I've stated here. Thank you for all the work that you do!

Eric. Thanks for your video. Very insightful. When talking about the First Amendment, one notices that there are 5 rights. Why did the founders of the United States Constitution put all these 5 rights in one amendment? They could have broke them apart into individual amendments. I believe that if one of the freedoms gets overpowered, another freedom is pushed out of the way. You put too much spice in a soup, the soup does not taste good and gets thrown out. However, just the right amount of the spice makes the soup perfect. These 5 freedoms act like a balance. When one freedom gets put out of balance, the judicial system will find that another freedom is often cripled. A judge has to enforce that freedom from being crippled and push back on the freedom that is overpowering the one. Thus, restoring balance in the first amendment.

Good to see you Eric! It appears you are recovering nicely. Brilliant comparison, using the society's own reasoning on why birthday celebrations should be avoided against their judicial process. I always looked forward to your videos; thank you for your tireless efforts.😊 This is more of a side thought..But the Society’s extremely thin “reasons” for condemning birthdays & considering them a disfellowshipping offense has always been twofold; the 2nd “reason” being, it is bringing honor to the one whose birthday it is, saying we must not honor men, only Jehovah God. However, even as a relatively young child, that latter reason in particular, never made sense to me...If celebrating my birthday is somehow sinfully honoring me, then why were we able to celebrate our parent’s anniversary every year..cake, presents, party w/guests, at times, and all?!🤔 I loved getting to celebrate my parent’s anniversary, don’t get me wrong; it was the only thing we were Allowed to have fun & celebrate. But my young mind couldn’t see how a party for one person’s birthday was worthy of death at Armageddon, whereas, a party celebrating-honoring- 2 people’s wedding anniversary was A-Okay! 😲 Wouldn’t that be honoring not one, but TWO people?? When I was foolish enough to bring it up, my questioning was shut down as wrong. Never Question the Society was drilled into all of us, in direct and indirect ways.😏

One such birthday that was spoken in a positive light was Job. Referred to as, "his day". That makes 4 birthdays. 2 negative ones and 2 positive ones which includes jesus literal birth day where gifts were given to the king although no dates are known exactly for these celebrations.

I praise God for your waking up! I have two JW biological brothers who are elders in the organization both for many years. I woke up because Jesus's words were in my head about how we know His followers by their fruit, and I realized my brothers (and the other many JWs I know) ARE NOT His followers! So I was actually saved in 2011, but spent three years lost at the Kingdom Hall and intending to get baptized. There's a lot to the story, but you were an elder!!!! If you have any suggestions for me as to how I might reach my biological brothers, please do respond to this post and let me know. Other than that, I try my best and always raise them up in prayer. My sister-in-laws too, who never felt like sister-in-laws or daughter-in-laws. They remind me of modern day Pharisees, actually. It is so sick and so profoundly sad. Thank you for this video.

And you are able to sincerely pray for the people in your life. Watchtower uses many tricks to keep people invested in Watchtower trivia. Brother Wilson may still come along and answer you. @@BeroeanPickets I am so grateful God pulled me out of that organization. My oldest JW elder left me in the hospital to die. It was my first wake-up call. I told him I didn't think I was going to make it. He responded by scoffing at me and quickly walking away from my hospital bedside as he said with disgust, "Nobody ever died of a broken leg." I had called him because the nurses were dismissing me, telling me I was just suffering side effects. Dismissed at that point, by the nurses on staff and my brother, I laid there praying, because I knew I was dying and my mother would never survive my death. Well the shift of nurses suddenly changed! I was too weak to ask for help anymore (and wasn't even aware of the shift change), but one of the nurses took the initiative. She couldn't understand why I was in that condition, and because she took that time she saved my life! It turns out I am allergic to dilaudid, which was an administered pain killer. When my brother found out that, were it not for that nurse I would have died, he rendered no reaction, no apology, not even one small blink of an eye. How can he do that and love me and my parents? I'm their only daughter and were it left up to him they would have buried me and, I'm sure, never bothered to tell anyone I called for help. He may be biologically related, but he has no love for us and I fear for him. I pray Ezekiel 36:26 for him all the time. He needs the stoney bits of his heart to be sifted away, and he needs a heart of flesh. I praise God for waking me up and getting me out of that demonic organization.

Hi Eric, I'm glad to see you well and healthy. This video has been very interesting and opens our eyes to the double systems of rules and the double standards practiced by JW. In relations with humans rights and its Judicial Committees. There is another biblical example of an improper judgement made to a God's servant. This is the casa of Stephen, recorded in Acts cap 6th and 7th. It wasn't during the night, or with the degree of secrecy that in Jesus case. But it was certainly, ilegal and unfair and it was behind of closed doors and with no possibility of witnesses, or of a defender, and with false accusations and false witnesses. For me, as well as there are two cases of negative birthdays in the Bible; there are two cases of improper trials similar to the JW judicial Committees!!!

you make a good argument but the precedent it would set would be a bridge too far. Jehovah's witnesses are not alone when it comes to 'shunning'. other faith systems like the 'amish' do the same. the question then becomes .... 'what would the state not be willing to do, should they involve themselves in such a matter?' yes, Jehovah's witnesses, just like every other religion, have the right to decide the conditions of membership; but the problem i see here is twofold ... the lack of transparency when it comes to membership; and the willful ignorance of those who do not do their 'due diligence'. the public needs to know far more than what the religion of Jehovah's witnesses wants to reveal. the public needs to know that in the last 20 years more than 1,400,000 dedicated and baptized members of this faith system were disfellowshipped. the detroit free press reporting 70,000 a year, a figure confirmed by watchtower itself. the membership of Jehovah's witnesses was approx 5,800,000 in the year 2000. i have the right figure but i'm too lazy to look it up. this means that, allowing for some disfellowshipments in the 20 year period, more than 1,000,000 who were members of this religion in the year 2000, were disfellowshipped in the following 20 year period; one out of every 6. this means that hundreds of thousands of citizens have been divorced from their loved ones, who have been 'shunned' by their families and this religion in the past 20 years. this kind of familial damage is heartrending and alarming. the cost to governments in dealing with those abandoned by faith systems might be billions each and every year, in housing, medical, social benefits, etc. governments expect faith systems to take care of their own, not toss members out into the street. jesus himself walked with many during his ministry, and there is not one whom he asked not to follow him; even judas, whom christ knew would betray him, was allowed to accompany him and his disciples. there is no indication in history or in the scriptures of mass excommunications in the first century congregations. the state expects churches to produce good citizens, not make bad ones. it should be remembered that each and every one of the 1,400,000 disfellowshipped since the year 2000, became unworthy and cast off for reasons they acquired WHILE they were Jehovah's witnesses WHILE they were part of the religion. therefore the problem is in the religion itself, and not in those cast off. the elders and leadership have failed these ones miserably. the damage to families has been enormous, and the cost to taxpayers unmeasurable. my question to the public .... 'would you join a religion where in the next 20 years you would have a 1 in 6 chance of being thrown out of the church; for reasons you acquired WHILE you were part of the church?' this is the kind of thing the public is not told... until it is too late. 'would you join a religion where in the next 20 years you would have a 1 in 6 chance of losing all your family and friends? possibly for a lifetime? where your children will not speak with you, where a grandmother on her deathbed would be denied her family there by her side?' this is the area where the state needs to get involved; where the destruction of families and the cost of helping the castaways is draining the public trust. some of these disfellowshipped and shunned get into drugs, are homeless .... why should the state pick up the tab for ANY church system that tosses their members to the street? the social cost in benefits and treatment long term for many of these, times the costs of damaged families, relationships, even suicides, could easily top 20 billion in any 20 year period. why should the state have to pay for members of a church system who got into trouble AFTER they became members? the public needs to know this information. the question is ... 'who is going to tell them?'

As a retired lawyer, I think you're making a large stretch, they are protected by the First Amendment, but the thing I like about your site is that you have a site name and others need a site name that protects them. For example, you can get a city License for a business very cheap and name yourself the Apostate Church of Jehovah's Witnesses, now you have freedom of religion just as Martin Luther did as he challenged the Catholic Church and we all know how sue-happy Jehovah's witnesses are, so always have a Constitutional Practice lawyer on your team. More than anything else do not use Jehovah's Witnesses actual site ( mainly videos) in your criticism of them, copyright law is very complex, but for example, Lloyd Evans knows the law very well, he seems to do it very well, but most people don't so Jehovah's Witnesses love to bully people and punish people so be careful.

Personally I'm of no religion, but I have to say I am bothered by the interference of law with religious practice, both against Catholics and JWs. It is the responsibility of the police and courts to enforce laws, such as those protecting children, while the job of the church may be to encourage lawful behavior, it is not their job to enforce it, and each religion or church has to make its own decisions on what to do and what not to do, depending, I suppose, based on the details of their beliefs. If a church wants to exercise mercy when a member or priest sins, that is their business, and they should not have any obligation to inform, let alone work with, law enforcement, and compelling them to do so or granting huge awards, largely enriching attorneys, when they don't, is as I see it an offense against the very idea of separation of church and state.

Well Watchtower, this works both ways, doesn’t it? Awake July 2009, The Bible’s Viewpoint: Is It Wrong to Change Your Religion? When Avtar began studying the Bible, her Sikh family was upset. “In my homeland,” she says, “changing your religion cuts you off from the community. Even our names have religious meaning. To change your religion is viewed as rejecting your identity and disrespecting your family.” AVTAR eventually became one of Jehovah’s Witnesses. Was she wrong to change her religion? Perhaps you identify with her family. You may feel that your religion is inextricably linked with family history and culture and should not be changed. Honoring one’s family is important. The Bible says: “Listen to your father who caused your birth.” (Proverbs 23:22) But it is more important to seek to know the truth about our Creator and his purposes. (Isaiah 55:6) Is such a search possible? If so, how important is this search to you? Searching for Religious Truth The world’s religions teach conflicting ideas. Logically, those teachings cannot all be true. As a result, there must be many people who, as the Bible says, “have a zeal for God; but not according to accurate knowledge.” (Romans 10:2) Yet, as recorded at 1 Timothy 2:4, the apostle Paul says that it is God’s will that “all sorts of men . . . come to an accurate knowledge of truth.” How can such accurate knowledge be found? Consider reasons for examining the Bible. Paul, who was an inspired Bible writer, stated: “All Scripture is inspired of God and beneficial for teaching.” (2 Timothy 3:16) As part of your search for truth, examine the evidence that the Bible’s claim is true. Investigate for yourself its unparalleled wisdom, historical accuracy, and fulfilled prophecy. Instead of presenting all religions as equal approaches to God, the Bible tells its readers not to believe everything they hear but to “test the inspired expressions to see whether they originate with God.” (1 John 4:1) For example, any teaching that truly originates with God must be in harmony with his personality, including his dominant quality of love. -1 John 4:8. The Bible assures us that God wants us to “really find him.” (Acts 17:26, 27) Since our Creator wants us to search for truth, it cannot be wrong to act on the evidence that we find -even if this means changing our religion. But what about the problems that this may bring? ' Balancing Family Loyalty When people change their beliefs, they may decide that they will no longer share in certain religious rituals or holidays. Understandably, this can result in strong feelings within the family. Jesus acknowledged this. He told his followers: “I came to cause division, with a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a young wife against her mother-in-law.” (Matthew 10:35) Did Jesus mean that Bible teachings were designed to be an unavoidable cause of contention? No. He simply foresaw what could happen when family members react negatively to one who takes a firm stand for beliefs different from theirs. Should family conflict be avoided at all costs? The Bible teaches that children should be obedient to parents and that wives should be in subjection to their husbands. (Ephesians 5:22; 6:1) However, it instructs those who love God to “obey God as ruler rather than men.” (Acts 5:29) Thus, at times, loyalty to God may result in your making a decision that is unpopular with some family members. Although the Bible makes a clear distinction between true and false teachings, God allows each person the freedom to choose how he or she will respond. (Deuteronomy 30:19, 20) No one should be forced to worship in a way that he finds unacceptable or be made to choose between his beliefs and his family. Does study of the Bible lead to family breakup? No. In fact, the Bible encourages a husband and wife who practice different religions to remain together as a family. -1 Corinthians 7:12, 13.

JWs may violate the spirit of the US Constitution with their internal discipline, but these religious practices, though deplorable, are not against the law. One could also make a case that Roman Catholics and Southern Baptists violate the spirit of US laws because they do not ordain women and gays. But ironically, those same US laws allow them to do this. I think the same has to be said about the JWs. This doesn't mean that you or I have to like the policies of any of these groups.
@vintage63463 жыл бұрын
William, I think that the operative words in your post may be "internal discipline". When people leave JW's, Watchtower presures other JW's to end business relationships with that person. And though financial loss may be less painful than the emotional loss, financial loss is more easily "proven". At what point does Watchtower's discipline cease to be "internal"?
@williamjarrell35413 жыл бұрын
@@vintage6346 I think it ceases to be "internal" when it violates laws against assault, theft, breech of contract. If the JWs decide to excommunicate people over birthday cakes that's their business. If they send out goons to attack people or their property then it's a matter for the police and courts. Ending a business relationship, except in breech of contract, may not be proper but in a free society it is permissible. Gay people may choose not to eat at Chick-fil-a because they disagree with the CEO's views. I don't see how the JWs are different. In free society people can base their economic decisions on whether they agree with the views of a business owner. If anything the US Constitution upholds this freedom of association.
