I was raised as a Jehovah's Witness. I was required to "prepare for" and attend FIVE meetings per week...The Ministry School, The Service Meeting, The Book Study, The Watchtower Study and the Public Talk. Along with this, I was expected to get at LEAST 10 hours of "Field Service" or Door to Door each month, prepare and give a "talk" about every two months, and attend all of the Circuit and District Conventions. I had very little time or energy for anything else, and I rarely did any homework. I was also not allowed to have any friends in "the world" or "worldly" friends. I was not allowed to partake in ANY after school activities...I was not even allowed to join the Chess Club. I never got to celebrate Christmas or have a birthday party...not to mention Easter, 4th of July or any other holiday. And I did not have a clue that I was in a cult. I believed everything I was taught since I was a baby, and like I was trained, would DEFEND "the truth" to anyone that tried to show me the true light or real truth. I was about 40 years old when I began to question what I had been taught. I coincided with them changing the doctrine on 1914 yet again, due to their "new light." According to them, the generation of 1914, is STILL alive, and Jesus has already returned, but he came invisibly. Once I started to do honest research with a lot of it using the "Societies" own past publications, my eyes were opened. (Among other things, they have had one false prophesy after another.) I have now been free from this high control cult for many years, after doing a "long fade" as to avoid being disfellowshiped and shunned, simply for no longer agreeing with their doctrine. One thing to keep in mind...you may....just may, be able to plant a small seed of doubt in the mind of a JW, but they are TRAINED to raise their shields and NOT even listen to anyone or anything that questions the teaching of their Governing Body...especially an X-JW who they refer to as "apostates." They will not visit your church, or read anything you give to them. At your door, they may take it, but they are trained to throw it away without looking at it. Never forget they are truly cultists.

She didn't pay much attention to the JW theology, HER FAMILY WANTED COMMUNITY. ( they were eventually asked to leave). But to me this a a key insight how some of the fringe groups attract young families that has been forgotten by mainstream denominations. Their views as easy to show are anti biblical but they are masters of dialogue so some study of their theological points of views are highly encouraged. One point you could easily get them on is when you open the door, and they offer you a watchtower tract, offer them some literature as well...they will likely reject it and say they have already read it or know it...then respond with well then why should I accept your literature. @@rumrunner8019 that really won’t work. Most of them don’t know about it. Especially the young ones. It’s not really spoken about. You have to dig in the literature to find it. And, besides, they will just tell you that the doctrine has changed since then because new light has come to them since then showing them the error of that teaching. The religion is set up perfectly for doctrinal changes because they see themselves as emerging from false teaching and having to constantly cleanse themselves and elements of false religion. This allows them to always undergo changes and to reject any prior teaching as something that is a remnant of false religion they have since shed.

Here's the most succinct differentiation between Jehovah's Witnesses and mainstream Christianity: Jehovah's Witnesses believe the Father alone is God (John 17:3, 1 Corinthians 8:6, and the entire Hebrew bible). And that it's important to know that he has a personal name (Exodus 3:15 and Jeremiah 16:21). (Although we're not picky about different dialects pronouncing it differently) We believe Jesus is the only-begotten son of God, our messiah, lord, king, and high priest to his God and ours. We believe Jesus actually emptied himself to be born on earth (not leaving a divine nature in heaven), and actually died (not leaving parts alive), and was actually resurrected. We believe the wages of sin is death (not hell), and the gift God offers is eternal life through an actual resurrection (Romans 6:23) as opposed to everyone dying and being separated into pleasant or torturous deaths. Further the promise in Revelation 21:3-4 that there will be no more mourning or crying or pain is directly incompatible with the concept of ongoing torment in a hell. And that it's everyone's job to study the bible and conform themselves to what IT teaches, regardless of how popular or unpopular any human tradition is.
@Episcopalianacolyte Жыл бұрын
If Jehovah's Witnesses conform to the teachings of the Bible, why is the NWT not in agreement with the Greek and Hebrew manuscripts? Why do they use titles like Governing Board, publishers, and Pioneers which come from Corporations? They are not from the Bible. Also, they hate JESUS. When he said not to believe anyone who said he returned invisibly, the Governing Board says that he lied and did return in 1914. JESUS said that his kingdom will have no end and that the gates of Hell can not prevail against it, but your Governing Board says that the church was destroyed and JESUS chose the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society to be his new church which makes JESUS a liar.

You can probably show me nothing about JW that I have not seen before, whether true or false. Much of it is like this: Matt 11:18 Likewise, John came neither eating nor drinking, but people say, ‘He has a demon.’ 19 The Son of man did come eating and drinking, but people say, ‘Look! A man who is a glutton and is given to drinking wine, a friend of tax collectors and sinners.’ All the same, wisdom is proved righteous by its works.”

@@777Tralfaz777 I’m not sure I understand the connection you are making with that passage. What I meant by my criticism was that any organization that binds the consciences of its members to never be exposed to any opposing views is suspicious. If they really had confidence that what they believe and teach is true, why would they absolutely prohibit this? How are you ever supposed to evaluate the truthfulness of your belief if you are never allowed to even be exposed to any opposing claims? I’m not denying the role of faith. But any organization can trap anybody into believing absolutely anything they want that way, because you wouldn’t be exposed to anything other than what they tell you. This is how the communist regimes of the early 20th century operated (and how North Korea still operates!). Finally, I feel that the society is really doing its members a disservice, especially in this age of the internet where so much information is available to anybody at all who wants to look for it. Wouldn’t it be better for the society to engage with the arguments against them to prepare their believers to be able to provide an answer for their faith?

From one of Jehovah's Witnesses, I appreciate that you can present a view that contradicts your own without getting derogatory. Thank you. However, I'd want to add a bit of comment: 1- I appreciate the opening, that Russell was just a guy with a publishing company. He was NOT a saint or prophet or anything of the sort. He just started a movement to question popular opinion and tradition and get back to what Christ actually taught in the bible. 2- I wouldn't really say "The Watchtower sets the doctrine of the group." The Watchtower magazine is a study guide. Things explicitly in the bible are doctrine. It's fair that two very important concepts where we differ from popular churches is that we are not trinitarian and believe that salvation is a resurrection to eternal life, and the lack of salvation is simply the lack of life: death. Not dying and spending eternity in heaven/hell. The book of Daniel (particularly chapter 4) is doctrinally important, but the idea that it points to 1914 (and what it means to point to 1914) is a human attempt to explain what Daniel 4 could mean. Daniel 4 is doctrine, our attempt to understand it is fallible speculation. 3- Same with the "Doctrines are established by it's governing body" statement. Their role is to organize the congregation and approve study material, not to set doctrine. They have responsibility, not authority. We're expected to give prayerful consideration to the studies offered, but they've said repeatedly over the last century that they are NOT infallible, and expect readers to first and foremost be loyal to God above all men, including them. They're not above the congregation, they only have a role of leadership WITHIN the congregation. 4- One amendment to the cross part: We note that the word used is "Stauros." This torture stake could be of any number of shapes, including but not limited to crosses. It COULD have been a simple upright stake. Or tree. Or a fixed Cross, sure. Or an X or a Y or a living tree or anything else. The point is the scripture doesn't specify a shape and we should not fixate on the shape itself, but the meaning of him giving up his life. Personally, what seems to fit the text as written and makes the most logical sense to me is that Jesus did NOT walk up carrying a whole cross OR stake, but was already strapped to a Roman patibulum (a removable crossbeam he'd already be strapped to when lead up to a simple permanent stake). 5- Not sure where you get the "God (The Father) has a spirit body and is not present everywhere" statement? 6- The 144,000 are simply the ones described in Revelation chapters 7 and 14. The little flock purchased from the earth to be kingdom priests, as opposed to "the great crowd which no one is able to number." Whatever their role is, or the duration of their role is up for speculation as it's only briefly mentioned in a couple parts in Revelation. But yes, we believe in the resurrection. 7- The "For salvation works are necessary" point also fundamentally misses the point. Salvation is a free gift. But, people who claim to submit to God should ACTUALLY submit to God. The full book of Romans clarifies the intricacies of this in very good detail, particularly chapters 5/6. Next few points are pretty fair, although "shunning people who leave" is a bit of a misrepresentation. Only if you were an ordained minister of the church AND you "not only leave," but either live in unrepentant sin or join a contradictory religion, THEN you would be acknowledged as "no longer one of Jehovah's Witnesses" and then congregational ties are severed unless you choose to return. This doesn't mean family ties, it's not grounds for divorce, parents are still responsible to care for their dependents, people should still be courteous, and disfellowshipped people should never be insulted or harassed or badmouthed behind their backs or anything like that. They're just not congregational brothers or sisters, and if they choose to continue coming to meetings, they won't be called on during the study review. 8- "Not allowed to read anti-watchtower literature" is also fair, but sometimes misrepresented. Yes, we read outside literature. We also read literature that disagrees with us. We're advised not to waste our time with literature that's blatantly biased and extremely polemic. If it's intentionally hostile literature intended to tear people down... we consider it best to just avoid it. Respectful disagreements in the realm of 1 Peter 3:15 is FINE. We WANT people to ask questions and look into the bible, even if it's to disprove us. We DON'T want to just "convert people to our dogma." We want people to get closer to God and study the truth. Everyone's imperfect, and to whatever extent we're wrong, we would RATHER you believe "the truth" than "our opinion." Because we've critically analyzed all available interpretations of scripture for so long, we're rather confident that we're the closest to what Jesus taught available today. If there were a group more accurately following Jesus, a faithful Jehovah's Witness would be obligated to go to that group and follow Jesus the best they can.

Thanks for your detailed comment. I will address 4 and 5 above. For #4, I think watchtower literature is explicitly against the "cross" shape. For example: Watchtower March 15, 1957, “Did Christ Die on a Cross?”, wol.jw.org/en/wol/d/r1/lp-e/1957201 "Clearly there is no Scriptural support for the traditional cross as a symbol of Christianity. Then how can its adoption by professed Christians be accounted for? It was borrowed from the surrounding pagans. It is another one of the many paganisms that the early apostate Christians adopted so as to appeal to the pagans and to be more like them. … Thus we see the Scriptures, the facts of history and reason uniting to testify that Christ did not die on a cross but upon an upright pole or stake, a stauros, xylon, crux. Also, that regardless of its form, it is to be abhorred rather than venerated. In keeping with these facts the New World Translation of the Christian Greek Scriptures renders stauros as “torture stake” and xylon as “stake,” when it refers to the instrument on which Christ died. " For #5 Watchtower February 15, 1981, “How Real is God to You?”, wol.jw.org/en/wol/d/r1/lp-e/1981122 Actually, by teaching that God is omnipresent Christendom has confused matters and made it more difficult for God to be real to his worshipers. How could God be present everywhere at the same time? God is a spirit Person, which means that he does not have a material body, but a spiritual one. A spirit has a body? Yes, for we read, “If there is a physical body, there is also a spiritual one.” (1 Cor. 15:44; John 4:24) God being an individual, a Person with a spirit body, has a place where he resides, and so he could not be at any other place at the same time.

The only things that bothers me of them is that only 144k will be saved. Why would say so if Jesus died for our sins?
@Anastas1786 Жыл бұрын
If I understand correctly, a JW would say that only 144,000 "anointed" will _go to Heaven_ to rule with Jesus as some sort of priest-kings. However, John 10:16 mentions "other sheep" which are "not of this fold" (presumably the anointed), "and they shall hear my voice, and there shall be one fold and one shepherd". When (in the video, 1:15) Jesus returns to reign over the Earth, He and the anointed will lead and purify this "other flock" consisting of all the dead who were righteous (but not righteous enough to make the 144,000 list), as well as all the dead who died "unrighteous" but who didn't warrant total anihilation, who will be getting a second chance to hear and obey (again, see the video) and thus join the ranks of the "other flock". Those righteous people who are _alive_ at the time of the Second Coming (and who aren't already part of the anointed) are considered part of the "great crowd" mentioned in the Book of Revelations, but are otherwise in the same boat as the "other flock". When the Millennium ends, Jesus and the anointed will return to Heaven to spend eternity with God, while the much, much larger "other flock" and "great crowd", purified inside and out, will live eternally in a peaceful utopia _on Earth,_ which by then will have been cleaned and restored into an equivalent to the Garden of Eden. As far as _salvation,_ rather than eschatology, JWs seem to subscribe to the "Ransom Theory", i.e. our sins doomed us to die and be eternally separated from God, but Jesus' death freed us and opened the way to Heaven, which would otherwise be entirely inaccessible. Again, this is all just assuming I'm understanding correctly. My understanding of it all is probably little better than yours; I'm just good at finding and summarizing information. Ultimately, I guess it depends on your definition of "saved". Most Christian denominations consider the righteous to be "saved" when they're assured that they'll be spending eternity _in Heaven,_ thus the JW "anointed" would be "saved" and the "other flock" would be in a weird not-quite-saved, not-quite-damned state. The JWs, if I'm not mistaken, would argue that the anointed and the other flock are _both_ "saved", living without sin for all eternity in wonderful lands of perfect peace and joy, it's just that their roles and their ultimate destinations are different.

A point of note : Charles T Russell , who founded the Bible Student Movement , that eventually split from the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society , taught that 1914 marked the end of gentile domination over the earth , but specifically in regards to Palestine , with the defeat of the Ottoman Empire , which he believed would lead to the restoration of natural Isreal restored to their homeland . History indicates he was right in that regard . In 1917 , the Belfour declaration was signed , paving the way for Jews to return to Palestine . The rest is history .

If we are to use Jesus is our example, he is said to have been 29 years old when he got baptized. In other words, you’re supposed to be old enough to know what you’re getting into and what you are committing to. @Hun_Uinaq9 ай бұрын
@@hereweare9096 I am aware of this. They do it for a different reason. Usually, a church that baptizes babies does so in order to save the child by having them be a Christian from the very beginning. Jehovah’s Witnesses reason for baptism is completely different. The reason is that somebody is leaving behind their former life of sin, and embracing a new life wherein they dedicate themselves completely to doing God‘s will as interpreted by the organization,. This usually translates to all the preaching work and upholding, the very strict statutes of the religion. Before they even get baptized, there is a long discourse that they have to listen to in a very public assembly hall type setting. During it, there are three questions that they must answer with a very loud and emphatic, yes while standing before the congregation. One of them involves that they will forever henceforth be identified as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses, and must adhere to their standards and principles. This is where I have a problem with baptizing children. That is too big of a commitment for a prepubescent child to fully understand. I would even argue that it’s too big for a teenager to understand. This is pretty much where they agree that if they screw up, they are liable to being shunned by everybody else in the religion up to and including their very own parents and siblings.

Refuting 'the organization' is easy enough but replacing its teachings can be difficult because some 'unlearning' is needed. To quickly summarize principal WT errors: 1) Supersessionism (ie. the Church - 'the organization in WT parlance' - inheriting the promises made to natural Jews), 2) Arianism (a fourth century heresy) and 3) partial preterism, namely that Christ has returned and the Kingdom has already been established on Earth. For example wrt to point #1 Jerusalem was not destroyed in 607BC as per WT, that happened roughly 20 years earlier, so the 1914 date for the return doesn't work; however if you apply the 2,250 prophetic years for the return of Israel to the Decree of Cyrus then you land on May 14, 1948, exactly when Israel was reestablished as a State. As for 144,000 these are natural Jews (Messianic converts like Paul most likely) appointed during the Tribulation period about which Revelation is written to evangelize after the 'restrainer' (ie. the true Church made of born again believers is gone), and not a cap on the number going to heaven. Point being, the Bible is true and inspired and if you want to know what is required for Salvation please simply read Romans 10:9,10. God wants a direct relationship with each of us we simply need to ask directly and genuinely repent of our sins. Denominations are all corrupt to varying degrees, thankfully that's not where we need to look for salvation. We simply need faith.

John 1:3 All things came into existence *through* him, and apart from him not even one thing came into existence. Jesus being the obvious exception. (1 Corinthians 8:6) there is actually to us one God, the Father, from whom all things are and we for him; and there is one Lord, Jesus Christ, *through* whom all things are and we through him. 7:54 1 John 5:20 But we know that the Son of God has come, and he has given us insight *so that we may gain the knowledge of the one who is true.* And we are in union with the one who is true, by means of his Son Jesus Christ. *This is the true God and life everlasting.* _The one Jesus explained to us, who is true, was Jesus Father. Can confirm. I was 16. And they don’t just baptize children, they contractually obligate these children to adhere to their tenants whether they truly and absolutely understand what they are getting into or not. Failure to strictly adhere to these tenants may result in expulsion and subsequent shunning by the entire group up to and including your own parents and your own siblings. No, you don’t sign a paper. What you do is you stand up along with everybody who is a candidate for baptism and you answer yes to three questions that amount to a contract stating that you have now agreed to be one of Jehovah’s witnesses and accept everything that goes along with it. Warts and all. When you are in adult in your 20s, or older, I think the import of this sinks in a lot better. When you’re a kid, all you know is you are making your parents happy and what you are doing is dedicating yourself to God. That’s it. All the other stuff just doesn’t cross your mind. I speak from personal experience as someone who was baptized as a teenager. I can’t imagine how little of this is absorbed by a seven-year-old child.

It's more a matter of a "believer's baptism" rather than an "infant baptism/alter call baptism." We don't see baptism as the FIRST step, but follow Jesus' example (as his started his ministry for the rest of his life). We would expect people to have ALREADY repented of their sin and submitted themselves to God to qualify for baptism. It's an ordination into the ministry that should come after you've thoroughly studied. So, if you've been studying since birth, baptism as a teenager happens. The comment below about people baptized at 7-10 would be quite abnormal... I wouldn't call the guy a liar or anything, but I've certainly never seen anyone THAT young baptized as a JW. I've done some bible readings and a talk in front of the congregation before the age of 10, sure... but we view baptism as serious as a marriage.

@morielrorschach8090 Жыл бұрын
@@wylolister3218 I'm sure those aren't the only two cases in history. But it would still be very abnormal. I'm 3rd generation, and starting to pursue preparation for baptism around 11 was still rather early. We believe people should "qualify" for baptism because it's not a decision to make on a whim... It's a commitment to minister for the rest of your life, as serious of a commitment as marriage. So, people should demonstrate that this isn't an impulse, that they actually understand what they're committing to, and that they're committing to serve God for the right reasons (loyalty to HIM, not trying to please their parents or impress some girl or whatnot). Although, you're right, the bible doesn't lay out such strict requirements. In fact, there are examples where apostles come across people and "what's to stop me from being baptized right now?" That's not necessarily an illegitimate baptism. But it's also not necessarily as meaningful of a baptism.

God lives in a specific place-the heavens. Consider these Bible passages: In a prayer, King Solomon said: “May you yourself listen from the heavens, your established place of dwelling.”-1 Kings 8:43. Jesus Christ taught his disciples to address their prayers to their “Father in the heavens.”-Matthew 6:9. After Jesus was resurrected, he entered “into heaven itself, now to appear before the person of God.”-Hebrews 9:24. Those verses clearly indicate that Jehovah God is a real person and that he dwells, not everywhere, but only in heaven.

The name Jehovah is actually a mistake. The tetragrammon, or the four consonants for the name of God (YHWH or JHWH) which occurs in the Jewish scriptures is never uttered. Instead, a replacement is spoken, Adoni, which means Lord. Later Hebrew scriptures inserted the vowels for Adoni into the four consonants. Early translators misunderstood this and what probably should have been Yahweh or Jahweh became Jehovah. Note that there isn't any O in Yahweh but there is in Adoni. Also the leading Y could also be a leading J. Net, net, there never was a word Jehovah.
@aivomand7076 Жыл бұрын
On January 21, 2018, Bible Scholar Nehemia Gordon and his team of researchers discovered the 1,000th Hebrew Bible manuscript containing the original name of God in Hebrew with vowels. For two hundred years, scholars have believed based on Greek sources and conjecture that the Hebrew name of God was originally pronounced “Yahweh.” In late 2016, Gordon found never-translated traditional Jewish sources that explicitly identified the vowels of God’s name in Hebrew as “Yehovah.” This is similar to the English Jehovah, but with a “Y” and the emphasis on the final syllable. - Religion News Service
@EcclesiastesLiker-py5ts Жыл бұрын
No, it's Jewish tradittion to replace with Adoni, but the name would be pronounced Jehovah, Jehovah, Yahweh, something like that, if the Jews did say it. "Jehovah" is a decent guess, but since Hebrew has no written vowels, nor the letter J, but does pronounce them, it's hard to be sure.
@andrewsuryali8540 Жыл бұрын
While Yahweh is probably the closest to how the deity's name was originally pronounced by the Judean worshippers who we now consider the precursors to the Jews, it is possible that there were variations back then. The religious elites who came up with the Tetragrammaton were possibly thinking of a slightly different pronounciation. Alephbet letters actually all have specific trailing vowel or pseudo-vowel sounds built in, and we know that on proto-Hebrew these sounds were fixed into words constructed with the specific letters. So, yod-hay-waw-hay may have been intended to be read as Yodhwawh originally.
